There isn’t enough accessible independent, model-level evidence to name five verified “best” top-load washers. The useful first decision is whether you want a traditional center agitator or an impeller, then to compare specific machines on capacity, fit, efficiency, features, and purchase logistics. The Whirlpool models below are manufacturer examples, not tested winners or a ranking.
Agitator or impeller: which top-load design fits you?
Both designs load from the top, but they wash differently. A traditional agitator has a twisting center column; an impeller uses a low-profile disc or fins at the bottom of the tub to move clothes through a lower-water wash.
Traditional center agitator
Consumer Reports’ 2026 category overview says agitator washers tend to be relatively affordable and fast, but may clean less effectively and be rougher on fabric than other washer types. Those are category-level tendencies, not guarantees about every model. Consumer Reports’ agitator roundup was updated July 26, 2026; its full model rankings were not accessible.
Impeller
An impeller leaves more of the tub open than a center post. Consumer Reports describes high-efficiency top-load washers as using about 13 gallons per load, a category figure rather than a promise for every washer or cycle. Its 2026 high-efficiency top-load roundup was updated June 4, 2026; its full model rankings were not accessible.

How top-load efficiency compares
ENERGY STAR says certified front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers. It also says front-load washers are about 25% more energy- and water-efficient than top-load impeller washers. These are broad category comparisons, not a forecast for a particular household’s bills or a model-specific result. ENERGY STAR’s washer guidance does not state a year for these figures.
Compare the exact machine and its certification rather than assuming every impeller model has the same use. Capacity, selected cycle, and household habits affect how much laundry fits and how often the machine runs.

What to check before buying
Capacity and physical fit
Choose capacity around the size and frequency of your usual loads; a drum’s cubic-foot rating is not a clothes-per-load guarantee. Measure the washer’s width, depth, and height, along with the space needed to open the lid. Check the route from the entrance to the laundry area, including doorways and turns, before ordering.
Features you will actually use
Compare cycle selection and practical extras, such as a built-in faucet, pretreat station, dispensers, or a removable agitator. A longer feature list does not prove better cleaning, so prioritize functions that match the laundry you do.

Delivery and ownership terms
Confirm the seller’s current price, delivery date and service area, installation, haul-away, return window, warranty, and access to service. Those terms vary by seller and location; they are not established by the manufacturer specifications above.
A simple way to narrow the choice
- Decide whether you want a center agitator or an impeller, based on the trade-offs and your loading preference.
- Filter for capacity, overall dimensions, and open-lid clearance that work in your home.
- Check the exact model’s cycles, useful features, water and energy information, and any applicable efficiency certification.
- Compare total purchase logistics with the seller before placing an order, including delivery, installation, haul-away, and returns.
Consumer Reports’ buying guide also frames the choice around household needs, features, style, and whether you prefer loading from the top rather than bending to load a front-loader. Its buying-guide page was updated May 26, 2026; the full page was not accessible.
