The 4 Cheapest Ways to Turn Your House Into a Smart Home

Start a smart home affordably with a plug, bulb, switch, or sensor routine. Learn what each option controls, what it requires, and where hidden costs arise.

You can add useful smart-home features without rewiring your house or buying a hub first. For most beginners, the lowest-cost options are a smart plug, a smart bulb, a smart switch where several lights share a circuit, and a sensor or schedule that automates a specific task. Start with one inconvenience—like a lamp you want on at sunset—and choose the least expensive device that actually solves it.

A single-device experiment can cost about $10–$30, while a useful starter setup is roughly $30–$75. Those are broad budget estimates, not fixed product prices; a required hub, electrician, or additional devices can raise the total.

1. Use a smart plug for a lamp or simple appliance

A smart plug is usually the cheapest way to control something you already own. It sits between the wall outlet and a lamp, fan, holiday lights, or another suitable appliance, adding app control and often schedules or voice control without replacing the appliance.

What it can—and cannot—do

A plug controls power, not the appliance’s full feature set. It cannot dim a lamp, change a bulb’s color, or press an electronic button. An appliance that stays off when power returns will not turn on just because the plug is switched on. A coffee maker is a candidate only if its physical switch safely resumes operation after power is restored.

  • Easy Install and Use: Download the Govee Home App and search for H5083, you can pair smart outlet successfully in minutes without barrier in smart home; share with your family on Govee app via phones so you can enjoy the smart life together.

Match the plug’s voltage, amperage, load type, and indoor or outdoor rating to the appliance. Do not assume an ordinary indoor plug is suitable for a heater, air conditioner, pump, motor, or outdoor equipment. Follow the plug and appliance manufacturers’ limits.

Set it up

  1. Plug it into a wall outlet and install the manufacturer’s app if required.
  2. Put the plug into pairing mode using the model’s documented reset procedure.
  3. Connect your phone to the required network. Some older Wi-Fi models require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
  4. Add the device in the app, give it a clear room-based name, and test on and off control.
  5. Create a schedule or routine, then label the plug if you have several similar devices.

For a Matter plug, pairing may involve scanning its Matter QR code or entering its code in a compatible smart-home app. TP-Link’s Matter setup guidance covers setup through platforms including Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, and SmartThings; the compatible controller and available features depend on the device and platform.

Choose the simplest plug that meets the need

For basic on/off control, a plug without energy monitoring is often the lower-cost choice. Monitoring can help identify a device’s power use, but it is not necessary for a lamp schedule. For example, Apple listed the Eve Energy Matter plug at $39.95 and a two-pack at $69.95 on its product page; these are observed prices, not guaranteed current prices. If you only need a lamp to turn on at a set time, that feature set may be more than you need.

  • SIMPLE TO SET UP WITH ALEXA: Get started in minutes with multiple setup options, including a zero touch experience when you select "Link device to your Alexa account" at checkout
  • CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: Schedule plugged-in appliances like lights or fans to turn on/off automatically, or control them remotely via the Alexa app when you’re away
  • COMPACT DESIGN: The plug fits perfectly into 1 socket, leaving remaining sockets and outlets free for use; ideal for multiple appliances like holiday lighting, heaters, fans, lamps, water kettles, coffee makers, and more
  • CUSTOMIZE ROUTINES: Schedule your smart plug to turn on/off either at designated times, with a voice command, or even at sunrise and sunset
  • NO 3RD PARTY APPS OR HUBS REQUIRED: Set up and manage connected devices directly in the Alexa app; no need for additional smart hubs or 3rd party apps

If the plug does not work as expected

  • If it is offline, check that it has power, that the Wi-Fi reaches the outlet, and that the router is not isolating devices from one another.
  • If pairing fails, use the manufacturer’s reset sequence and confirm the phone is on the required network.
  • If the appliance does not start, it may need a physical or electronic button press after power is restored.
  • If a voice assistant selects the wrong device, choose a short, unique name such as “Living Room Lamp.”

Cloud-dependent devices can lose features if a vendor ends service. Google’s Google Home help page records that Wemo devices lost cloud-dependent functionality after January 31, 2026. That example is a reason to consider vendor support and cloud dependence before buying; it does not mean every cloud-connected device will fail.

2. Add a smart bulb where you want lighting control

A smart bulb is an easy, renter-friendly upgrade for a lamp or other fixture with a replaceable bulb. Depending on the model, it can add app control, schedules, dimming, adjustable white color temperature, or color effects without electrical work.

Check the bulb and fixture before buying

  • Match the socket type, such as A19/E26 or E12, and confirm the bulb is suitable for the fixture and voltage.
  • Compare brightness in lumens, not just the wattage of the old bulb.
  • Choose white, tunable white, or color based on how you will use the light. Color effects cost more and are not useful in every room.
  • Check whether the bulb uses Wi-Fi, Matter over Wi-Fi, or Matter over Thread, and whether the chosen platform needs a hub or controller.
  • Look for indoor or outdoor approval as appropriate, dimmer compatibility, and adjustable behavior after a power interruption.

On its U.S. wireless-lighting catalog, IKEA listed Matter-compatible bulbs and a $9.99-per-pack price signal; the page also notes that full-feature control may require a DIRIGERA hub. Check the exact bulb and platform requirements on IKEA’s current catalog before purchasing. Apple listed a Nanoleaf Essentials Matter A19 three-pack for $49.95 and a compatible smart-home hub requirement for Apple Home use on its product page. Catalog prices and requirements can change.

Install and pair it

  1. Confirm the socket and fixture requirements, then turn off power before replacing the bulb.
  2. Install the bulb and turn the fixture back on.
  3. Add it using the manufacturer’s app or a compatible Matter platform, following the model’s pairing instructions.
  4. Name it for its location, then test power, brightness, and any color or temperature controls.
  5. Set a schedule or routine and leave the fixture’s physical switch on for app control.

The switch limitation matters: when someone turns off the wall switch, the bulb loses power and cannot respond to the app or a routine. If a wall switch is used frequently, a smart switch may be a better whole-room solution. If the bulb flickers, check whether the fixture has an incompatible dimmer or wiring; do not assume that every smart bulb works with every dimmer.

3. Use a smart switch when one circuit controls several lights

A single smart switch can be better value than buying a smart bulb for each ceiling light on one circuit. It also preserves ordinary wall control, so the lights do not disappear from the app simply because someone used the switch. Consider it for a kitchen, hallway, porch, or other room where several lights share a traditional switch.

Check the wiring and switch type first

Compatibility depends on the actual wiring and switch arrangement. Before buying, confirm whether the circuit is single-pole or three-way/multi-way, whether a neutral wire is present, whether the switch supports the bulbs’ load and LED type, and whether the electrical box has room for the device and connectors. A no-neutral model may be an option, but it must specifically support the home’s wiring and load.

Renters should get permission before replacing a hardwired switch. A switch that looks inexpensive can become the costliest option once tools, parts, or electrician labor are included.

Use a safe installation boundary

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker and verify the circuit is de-energized with an appropriate tester.
  2. Photograph and label the existing conductors before disconnecting anything.
  3. Follow the exact switch manual; do not identify wires by color alone.
  4. Stop and contact an electrician if the wiring differs from the manual or you cannot identify the conductors.
  5. Restore power and pair the switch in its app only after the physical installation is complete.

These are safety checks, not universal wiring instructions: switch designs, circuit arrangements, and local electrical requirements vary.

4. Add a sensor or routine to automate a real task

A sensor alone does little; its value comes from the routine it triggers. A motion sensor can turn on a hallway light after dark, a contact sensor can notify you that a door or window is open, and a temperature sensor can trigger an alert or supported routine. Schedules can automate useful tasks without buying a sensor at all.

Try a routine before buying another device

  • Turn a lamp on at sunset.
  • Turn selected lights or plugs off at bedtime.
  • Switch a fan off after a set period, if the appliance and plug are suitable.
  • Turn selected devices off when leaving home.

When a schedule does not solve the problem, add one sensor for a defined job: for example, motion-triggered pantry lighting or an entry-door notification. Check the sensor’s controller or hub requirement, battery type and replacement cost, detection range, mounting method, and whether its automation works when the internet is unavailable.

Plan for sensor limitations

  • Poor placement can cause repeated motion triggers; pets may also trigger motion alerts.
  • Motion sensors may not detect someone who is sitting still.
  • A contact sensor reports whether a door or window is open or closed; it does not identify who opened it.
  • Battery sensors may sleep between events or introduce delays.
  • A routine can fail if its hub, network, platform, or cloud service is unavailable.

A notification from a smart-home sensor is not a professionally monitored security system. Do not rely on a consumer automation as a safety-critical control without a suitable manual fallback.

Choose the platform you already have, then check compatibility

The lowest total cost often comes from using a phone, speaker, or smart-home system already in the home. Check the exact device model and the platform’s compatibility information before buying; brand names alone do not guarantee that every feature works together.

  • Existing Alexa setup: Look for devices supported by the Echo or other Alexa controller you already own. Amazon’s Matter support documentation lists compatible Echo devices and describes Alexa’s Matter support.
  • Existing Google Home or Nest setup: Check both Google’s compatible-device listings and its supported device categories. Setup and supported features vary by device.
  • Apple Home household: Check whether the particular device and connection method require an Apple home hub or Thread border router. Do not buy a HomePod or Apple TV solely for a cheap lamp unless the additional capability is worth the cost.
  • Mixed-platform household: Matter can make cross-platform control easier, but it does not mean every Matter device works identically everywhere. The controller, device category, network, Thread infrastructure where relevant, and access to advanced features still matter. Google’s Matter guidance explains its setup and compatibility requirements.

A separate hub is usually unnecessary for a first plug or bulb if a compatible device can join the existing platform directly. A hub can make sense later for a larger system, Zigbee or Z-Wave devices, local automations, or fewer Wi-Fi devices. Matter is an interoperability standard, not a guarantee of local operation or privacy: those also depend on the product, app, platform, and account model. Google notes that IPv6 configuration can affect Matter setup, including cases where setup appears to succeed but later fails; see its network guidance.

Three low-cost ways to start

Starter plan What to buy or use Best for
Absolute minimum One basic smart plug, its free app, and one schedule Testing remote control or automation on a lamp or suitable appliance
Renter setup Two plugs and one or two compatible smart bulbs; add a removable sensor only for a specific need Lighting and simple routines without hardwired changes
Whole-room value One compatible smart switch for a multi-light circuit and one sensor if it solves a recurring problem Rooms where several fixtures share a wall switch

These are device plans, not fixed quotes. Confirm current prices, hub requirements, electrical suitability, and platform compatibility for the exact models you choose.

Avoid the purchases that make a cheap setup expensive

  • Buying across incompatible ecosystems: Pick the platform you already use, or verify the exact Matter controller and features before mixing brands.
  • Ignoring required infrastructure: A low-priced bulb may require a hub for the control method or features you want. Include that cost before comparing it with a hub-free plug or bulb.
  • Using a plug as an appliance controller: It only switches power. Check the appliance’s behavior after power restoration and the plug’s electrical rating.
  • Putting smart bulbs behind a frequently used wall switch: Cutting power makes the bulbs unavailable. Consider a smart switch instead.
  • Paying for color when white light is enough: Choose the least expensive bulb that supplies the brightness and color temperature you will use.
  • Overlooking Wi-Fi quality: A weak signal or poorly configured network can make devices appear unreliable; check coverage where each device will sit.
  • Assuming cloud services last indefinitely: Review vendor support and cloud dependence, and prefer products with a clear recovery path.
  • Expecting guaranteed energy savings: Scheduling or measuring a load can help, but savings depend on the device and how your household uses it.
