Choose the Roomba Combo j9+ Auto-Fill if you mop often and want the dock to refill the robot’s liquid supply. Choose the Combo j7+ if you want a carpet-safe vacuum-and-mop robot for less and are willing to fill the water tank and maintain the mop pad yourself. Both retract the mop onto the robot when they detect carpet, avoid common obstacles, and automatically empty debris; neither is maintenance-free.
This comparison is between the Combo models, not the vacuum-only Roomba j7+ and j9+. There is also a Combo j9+ configuration with an AutoEmpty dock rather than the Auto-Fill dock; it does not offer the same automatic liquid refilling.

What the j9+ adds—and what it does not
Automatic liquid refilling
The biggest day-to-day difference is the j9+ Auto-Fill dock. It replenishes the robot’s liquid supply; the j7+ requires manual filling. That can make a meaningful difference if you run mop missions several times a week, especially across a large hard-floor area. It does not mean the dock washes or dries the mop pad: the j9+ Auto-Fill product page describes liquid refilling, not automatic pad washing and drying. You still need to clean and eventually replace the pad.

Vacuum suction claims
iRobot advertises the j9+ as having 100% stronger Power-Lifting Suction than the model identified in its product-page comparison. Treat that as a manufacturer claim, not proof of twice the real-world dirt pickup on every floor. Pickup depends on the debris, carpet pile, brush and filter condition, and other conditions. The available RTINGS comparison covers the vacuum-only j7+ and j9+, not these Combo configurations, so it should not be used as a direct test of their mop systems or docks.
Mopping and carpet protection
Both Combo robots can vacuum and mop hard floors in one mission. Their retracting-mop design lifts the pad to the top of the robot when carpet is detected, rather than dragging a wet pad across a rug. Both also offer SmartScrub-style back-and-forth mopping. iRobot describes the j7+’s SmartScrub as applying 1.16 pounds of pressure and claims twice the cleaning depth of its standard vacuum-and-mop mode in a specified coffee-and-grime comparison. These are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee for every stain or floor. Carpet protection also depends on detection and retraction working as intended; fringe, unusual rug surfaces, dark materials, and difficult transitions can still cause problems.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Dock footprint and capacity
The j9+ dock adds liquid refilling and storage, but takes up more room: it is 4.5 inches deeper and 3 inches taller than the j7+ dock, based on iRobot’s listed dimensions. Measure the intended spot, including approach space, before choosing it. The j7+ dock is the more compact option, though it still needs a permanent location with a clear path for docking.
Room mapping and prioritization
The j7+ supports mapped rooms, room-specific cleaning preferences, Clean Zones, and Keep Out Zones. The j9+ adds Dirt Detective, which iRobot says prioritizes dirtier rooms. iRobot also claims the j9+ can map seven times faster than its prior mapping technology and label room types with up to 90% accuracy; those are company claims, not guaranteed results for every home. App and software features can change with iRobot OS updates, so do not choose solely on the assumption that a particular automation will remain unchanged.

What both Combo models do well
- Obstacle recognition: Both use PrecisionVision Navigation to recognize and avoid common items such as cords, shoes, socks, clothing, towels, and pet waste. Avoidance is not infallible; lighting, shape, color, reflective or transparent surfaces, clutter, and objects partly hidden under furniture can affect detection.
- Pet-waste coverage: Both are covered by iRobot’s Pet Owner Official Promise (P.O.O.P.), subject to its terms. It is not an unconditional guarantee that the robot will never encounter or smear an accident. Pick up hazards and supervise early runs, particularly in homes with puppies, kittens, or frequent accidents.
- Self-emptying and cleaning controls: Both can empty collected debris into a Clean Base and use iRobot OS and app-based room controls. Both support recharging and resuming a mission, as well as voice control through supported assistants.
- Similar clearance: Both robots are listed as 3.4 inches high, so under-furniture clearance is broadly similar. Measure furniture openings rather than assuming either will fit.
Roomba Combo j7+: pros and cons
Pros
- Usually the stronger value when it is substantially cheaper than the j9+.
- Includes the key retracting-mop design, obstacle recognition, and room-specific cleaning controls.
- Its smaller, shallower dock is easier to place in a tight room.
- Automatic debris disposal reduces one regular chore; iRobot rates it for up to 60 days, subject to use.
Cons
- You must fill its water supply and clean the mop pad yourself.
- It does not have the j9+ Auto-Fill dock or Dirt Detective prioritization.
- It has a lower advertised suction position than the j9+, though the j9+ figure is a manufacturer comparison rather than a universal real-world pickup result.
- It still needs regular attention to its pad, brushes, filter, sensors, charging contacts, and disposal bags.
Roomba Combo j9+ Auto-Fill: pros and cons
Pros
- Reduces water-refill chores with an Auto-Fill dock that iRobot rates for up to 30 days of liquid supply, depending on use.
- Combines automatic debris disposal, liquid refilling, and storage in its dock.
- Adds Dirt Detective room prioritization and carries iRobot’s stronger suction claim.
- Retains the Combo j7+’s basic carpet-safe retracting-mop approach.
Cons
- The $1,399.99 U.S. list price shown on iRobot’s page in August 2026 makes it a premium purchase; direct iRobot availability was marked unavailable then.
- The dock’s 16.4-inch depth and 16.3-inch height may be awkward in an apartment, hallway, or beside cabinetry.
- Auto-Fill does not establish automatic mop-pad washing or drying; pad care and other maintenance remain your responsibility.
- The higher weight and advertised suction or mapping figures do not by themselves prove a better result in every household.
Which model fits your home?
Mostly carpet, occasional mopping
Lean toward the j7+ if it is meaningfully cheaper. Both have the retracting mop concept, but a carpet-heavy home gets less value from automatic water refilling than a home that mops frequently.
Mostly hard floors, frequent mopping
The j9+ is the more convenient choice. Its Auto-Fill dock addresses the chore that otherwise recurs as you schedule mop runs. Remember that pad washing and periodic maintenance are still hands-on.

Pets, children, or clutter
Both offer obstacle recognition, but neither makes floor preparation unnecessary. Pick up cords, small toys, and likely hazards; test early missions while present. Loose fur and debris also mean more frequent brush and filter checks.

You want automatic mop washing and drying
Neither of these two configurations is established as an automatic pad-washing system. iRobot lists the Roomba Plus 575 Combo with AutoWash dock as a separate product; check its current price, availability, and feature details if pad washing and drying are essential.
Is the j9+ worth paying more for?
There is no reliable fixed price gap that makes one model the right choice for everyone. Compare live prices for the exact Combo configurations, then weigh the difference against how often you mop:
- Small gap: The j9+ is easier to justify if you will use Auto-Fill regularly and have space for its dock.
- Large gap: The j7+ is the value pick unless routine manual filling is a deal-breaker or the j9+’s additional automation matters to your household.
- Mostly vacuuming: Avoid paying a large premium for a liquid-refill feature you will rarely use.
- Expecting a self-cleaning mop: Do not pay extra for the j9+ Auto-Fill on that assumption; its listed dock function is refilling liquid, not washing and drying the pad.
Check the model name carefully when shopping: iRobot sells a separate Combo j9+ with an AutoEmpty dock. That configuration is not interchangeable with the Auto-Fill version if automatic water replenishment is the reason you are upgrading. The vacuum-only Roomba j7+ is also a different product from the Combo j7+.
Quick Recap
Ownership and maintenance to plan for
- Wash mop pads regularly and replace them when worn. The official Combo j-series replenishment kit page gives compatibility details; confirm your exact model before ordering pads or other consumables.
- Check brushes, filters, sensors, and charging contacts for hair, dust, or residue. Both models use disposable debris bags and need ongoing consumables.
- Give the dock a stable, clear approach. Uneven placement, nearby cables, a moved dock, or dirty charging contacts can interfere with docking; avoid relocating it after mapping if possible.
- Expect rugs and thresholds to vary. Fringe can tangle, slippery rugs can shift, and thick thresholds may block transitions. Move vulnerable rugs or define restricted zones if needed.
- Clear spills and pet accidents manually rather than relying on a robot to handle wet or smeared substances.
