Then define a safe route for wet feet and add borders, planting, screening, lighting, or a deck without blocking access to the pool or its equipment.
Start with the pool site, not the landscaping
Landscaping cannot compensate for an unsuitable base. Prepare the pool area according to the manual for your specific model: clear debris, measure the ground for level, and compact it as directed. Bestway’s setup guidance emphasizes these steps and recommends a ground cloth to help protect the liner from sticks and rocks and reduce muddy areas if water spills over the edge. Do not judge level by eye. Royal Swimming Pools recommends checking with a level or transit and preparing a solid base around the perimeter. An uneven site can place excessive stress on the pool wall and frame. See its above-ground pool site-preparation guide.
Before adding paving, planting beds, or a deck, consider where rain and splash-out water will go. Grading and drainage affect whether water collects around the pool or deck; the right solution depends on the yard rather than a single universal design. Choose a layout that fits how you use the pool
Plan the area as a few connected zones: pool entry, a clear walking route, and—if you want it—a place to sit or gather. Keep the ladder, pool perimeter, and equipment reachable for routine use and maintenance. A simple border may be enough to make the pool feel intentional; a deck makes sense when it adds useful access or seating. Leave the clearances required by the pool manufacturer.
Simple border
A defined edge between the lawn and pool can make the installation look finished without taking up much yard space. Choose a treatment that does not interfere with the pool’s support, drainage, or service access. There is no single border material that suits every pool model and site.

Pathway and planting
Give wet-foot traffic a direct, stable route between the pool, house, and seating area. XL Pools’ Architects’ Guide recommends stable, non-slip paving and pathway materials for pool areas. Add greenery, stone accents, natural wood, screens, or lighting where they suit the yard and do not obstruct access; these are among the design options in Lowe’s above-ground pool deck and design ideas. Select plants for your local climate and the upkeep you are willing to do; the available guidance does not establish a universal poolside plant list.
Partial or full deck
A deck can create an easier entry point, a lounging area, or a stronger connection between the pool and house. Its footprint and layout depend on the pool shape and site. Trex describes partial wraparound decks as one option for round pools and notes that oval pools allow more layout flexibility, while cautioning that its guide is not universal. Its project guidance is specific to its Trex Enhance decking and railing products, not a substitute for the pool maker’s instructions or local construction requirements.
