There is a reported solar-powered trash-bin deodorizing insert, but the evidence available does not establish it as a product consumers can buy. Solar odor-related features are described for some complete public-space bins; for an ordinary outdoor wheeled bin, a non-solar deodorizing powder is a more practical product category to consider.
Is a solar-powered trash-bin deodorizer available to buy?
No confirmed retail listing was identified for the solar-powered lid insert described in a 2026 American Chemical Society (ACS) research news release. The ACS presents it as a research development and says the work could someday lead to a sustainable odor-control solution—not as a product currently offered for sale. The report summarizes a study in Environmental Science & Technology. Read the ACS report.

That distinction matters if you are choosing equipment for a home, job site, or outdoor service area: the research insert is not a verified alternative to a deodorizer you can order and fit to a standard bin. The evidence described here also does not establish a market-wide inventory, consumer reviews, or independent comparative testing of solar deodorizer products.

What the reported solar insert does
The research insert fits into a trash-bin lid. A transparent, gas-permeable membrane and a lens concentrate sunlight onto a manganese-oxide-based catalyst. Researchers bonded lithium to the manganese oxide to improve catalytic activity. The reported mechanism targets acetic acid, which the ACS release identifies as the main odor-causing compound released by the rotting food used in the study.

- POWERFUL ODOR ELIMINATOR FIGHTS SMELLS AT THE SOURCE: BEEST’s outdoor trash can deodorizer odor eliminator uses biodegradable cellulose granules to neutralize foul smells and soak up leaks, spills, and waste at the bottom of bins and dumpsters.
- ECO-FRIENDLY & SAFE FOR KIDS/PETS: Our trash can odor eliminator is a non-toxic, biodegradable formula made with essential oils like rosemary, peppermint, and lemongrass for a cleaner, safer, and fresher trash experience—with no sticky residue left behind.
- GARBAGE CAN DEODORIZER FOR ALL OUTDOOR RECEPTACLES, SIZES, & SPACES: Ideal for residential bins, restaurant dumpsters, and public facilities. Usage varies by waste type and cleaning frequency—food waste and uncleaned bins may require a heavier application than dry debris.
- EASY SPRINKLE-BASED APPLICATION WITH DUAL-ACTION CAP: This trash odor eliminator can be applied easily by sprinkling it into the base, halfway through filling, or on full loads. Unlike other deodorizer stick-ons that fall into the bin within a week, our dual-action cap allows for a wide or controlled, mess-free application.
- PROUDLY MADE AND TESTED IN THE USA: American quality you can trust – Beest’s Dumpster Defender trash deodorizer is backed by an American-owned company and dedicated USA-based customer support to help you keep your space clean and odor-free
In simulated-sunlight laboratory conditions, the refined catalyst broke down acetic acid more effectively than manganese oxide alone or activated carbon, according to the ACS report. The report also says it performed well in humid conditions; it does not provide a general performance promise for every climate, bin, or mix of waste.
For a real-world test, researchers fitted a removable insert to the lid of a standard wheeled bin. The ACS reports that it continuously broke down acetic acid generated by decaying fruit, bread, and wine for more than 40 days in natural sunlight. This is a reported study result, not a guarantee across seasons, weather, installation conditions, or other waste. Corresponding author Jinlong Wang explained the design goal: “We wanted to address the odor at its source, inside the bin itself, instead of letting it escape into the street.”

Solar public-space bins are a different kind of option
Some manufacturers describe complete solar-powered public-space waste bins with odor-related or disinfection features. These are larger systems for public settings, not simple solar deodorizer inserts for household or construction-site bins.
| Option | Intended setting and power | Odor or disinfection feature | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| LC GREEN AUGUSTO | Complete public-space waste bin; manufacturer describes a monocrystalline photovoltaic panel. | Optional UVC light inside the bin; manufacturer says it helps prevent bacterial growth and reduce unpleasant odors. | The UVC feature is optional. It is not a lid insert for a standard wheeled bin. See the manufacturer’s description. |
| BrasiT solar urban trash bin | Complete urban bin with photovoltaic modules and energy storage; manufacturer also describes automatic lid opening. | Manufacturer describes a disinfection system and makes a low-odor-emission claim. | Detailed specifications are available by request. The source does not establish that the disinfection configuration or odor performance applies to every version. See BrasiT’s description. |
These descriptions are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative tests. Before specifying a public-space unit, ask the supplier for the exact configuration, disinfection method, maintenance requirements, and detailed specifications. Do not assume that a feature described as optional is included in every unit.

Practical odor control for an ordinary outdoor bin
If your immediate need is to reduce odors in an existing garage or outdoor bin, a dry-powder deodorizer is an adjacent option—but it is not solar powered. ACT Cleaners describes a trash deodorizer and cleaner intended for garage and outdoor bins, applied by sprinkling it on the sides and bottom. Check the product directions for use details.
BinGuard describes an automatic deodorizer dispenser for outdoor bins, but the kit appeared as sold out in the search result. Availability can change; verify the seller’s current status before relying on it. Check BinGuard’s listing.

How to choose without confusing the categories
- For a standard wheeled bin: The solar lid insert remains a reported research development, not a confirmed consumer product. A powder is a currently described non-solar product type; follow its directions and confirm current availability.
- For a public-space installation: Compare complete bins by intended setting, solar and battery configuration, whether odor or disinfection features are optional, installation and maintenance needs, and whether the supplier provides detailed specifications.
- For a claimed solar deodorizing design: A patent record describes a garbage-can design with a solar-panel cover, battery, disinfectant device, and drying agent. A patent shows that a design was disclosed; it does not establish that it was manufactured or is for sale. View patent CN104016047A.
Because these are different product types and scales, they cannot be ranked as interchangeable solutions for the same bin. Manufacturer descriptions do not provide independent performance comparisons, and the reported insert test does not establish results for other waste mixtures or field conditions.
