For routine household bin care, empty it, rinse away loose residue, scrub the inside and lid with soap and water, rinse again, then let it dry fully before adding a fresh liner. This removes grime that can contribute to odors without relying on strong cleaners. Washing and drying are cleaning steps, not proof that the bin has been disinfected.
What you need
- Ordinary dish soap or detergent and water
- A cloth or brush suitable for the bin’s surface; a long-handled brush can help reach the bottom and corners
- A suitable place to rinse the bin, such as outdoors or a wash area
No particular brush or cleaner is required. Choose a brush that can reach the areas you need to scrub, rinse clean, and suit the bin’s material.

How to clean the bin
- Empty it. Remove the liner and visible residue. Handle waste carefully, and do not put your hands into material that may contain sharp or contaminated items.
- Rinse loose debris away. Rinse the bin outdoors or in a suitable wash area.
- Scrub with soap and water. Work over the interior, rim, underside of the lid, and exterior areas you touch. The CDC defines cleaning as using water, soap, and scrubbing; its guidance says that in most situations, cleaning alone with soap and water can remove germs. This is general hard-surface guidance applied to a household bin, not a bin-specific protocol.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse away loosened residue and soap, then leave the bin open until it is completely dry before fitting a fresh liner. Drying fully is practical odor-prevention advice; no bin-specific drying trial is established in the cited guidance.
Optional: baking soda and water
The EPA lists a baking-soda-and-water mixture as a general all-purpose cleaning alternative. You can use it as an optional cleaning step, but the EPA material does not establish a bin-specific deodorizing result, a measured odor reduction, or a disinfecting effect. Do not treat it as a substitute for disinfection when disinfection is actually needed.

Cleaning is not the same as disinfecting
Cleaning removes grime and impurities. Sanitizing and disinfecting are separate claims; washing a bin with soap and water does not establish that it has been disinfected. CDC guidance says household disinfection is generally unnecessary in most situations unless someone is sick or at higher risk. Clean first if disinfection is warranted, because dirt and impurities can make sanitizing or disinfecting chemicals less effective.

If you do need a disinfectant, choose one suitable for the bin’s surface and intended use, then follow its label for dilution, contact time, ventilation, and protective equipment. Never mix cleaning products or chemicals.
