Some odor-control products combine charcoal with other materials or fragrance. KINCHO, for example, describes a product containing charcoal and copper aluminosilicate as well as fragrance. Its stated freshness duration is approximately 30 days, and the maker says it varies with use conditions; that is a product-specific claim, not a general lifespan for charcoal.
When baking-soda granules make sense
Granules are a direct option if you want to add a trash-specific product as you add waste. ARM & HAMMER recommends that routine for its Trash Can & Dumpster Deodorizer, which it describes as baking soda with fragrance. That description supports what the product is and how its maker says to use it; it does not prove that baking soda is more effective than carbon, enzymes, or sprays.

Consider whether you want added fragrance and whether the product will remain dry in its intended location. Follow the package directions for amount and placement.
When to consider enzyme products
Enzyme-based products are marketed for organic odor sources. Blue Cardinal describes Trash Treater as an enzyme-based garbage deodorizer for garbage areas, chutes, and dumpsters; Ecolab lists trashcans among the uses of its bio-enzymatic product. Those are manufacturer descriptions, and some products may be intended for commercial settings rather than ordinary household use.

Read the exact label for the surface, dilution, contact time, frequency, and precautions. “Enzyme-based” alone does not tell you whether a formulation suits a particular bin or residue.
When a spray is the better fit
Sprays suit a routine in which you apply a product to a specified odor source or surface. Product formats and claims differ. Febreze’s TRASH Odor Fighter Gain Original Scent product page claims “up to 99%” reduction of common trash odors and “45 days” of freshness. Those figures are the manufacturer’s claims for that product, not independent test results or evidence that sprays generally last that long.

Check where the product may be sprayed. Kobayashi warns that its garbage deodorizing spray may stain carpets, wallpaper, and furniture if sprayed directly on them, and advises keeping it away from children. Use the label’s directions rather than treating a spray as a general-purpose cleaner.

Deodorizing is not the same as cleaning or disinfecting
A deodorizing claim does not establish that a product cleans a bin or disinfects it. EPA pesticide labels can include trash-can deodorizing language for a specific registered product, but that wording applies to that product and its labeled uses—not to sprays as a category.

For a product’s safety or environmental attributes, consult its label and exact certification status. EPA’s Safer Choice program evaluates certified products and ingredients under its standard; terms such as “natural,” “enzyme,” or “fragrance-free” do not by themselves establish certification or a particular safety status. EPA also notes that household chemical manufacturers generally are not required by law to list every ingredient.
