Sliding Dovetails: How to Cut and Fit the Joint

A practical guide to sliding dovetail uses, router and hand-cut methods, tapered joints, and fitting the parts so they slide without gaps or binding.

A sliding dovetail joins a shaped tongue on one board to a matching groove in another. The dovetail-shaped sides retain the parts, while the tongue slides along the groove during assembly. To make one, cut the socket first, form the matching profile, then adjust on scrap until the joint slides without gaps or binding.

What a sliding dovetail is used for

The joint is useful when a board must be held along its length by a mating piece. Fine Woodworking describes it for shelf support and drawer construction; hand-cut examples also include cabinet partitions and fixed shelves attached to cabinet sides. The angled sides distinguish it from a straight dado: they mechanically retain the joined member across the profile.

Plan the assembly direction before cutting. A through groove allows the tongue to slide in from an end; a stopped groove conceals the end but requires the parts to enter from the open side. The joint’s geometry and end condition determine how it can be assembled.

Choose a cutting method

Method Typical tools Best suited to Key consideration
Router-cut Router table, straight bit, dovetail bit Repeatable socket and matching profile cuts Make light adjustments on test pieces; bit size and setup depend on the intended joint.
Hand-cut Saw, chisels, dovetail plane, router plane Work where hand-tool control or a tapered fit is desired Requires careful marking and fitting; no router is required.

Neither method has a demonstrated universal strength advantage. The cited woodworking instructions do not report controlled strength comparisons, so choose based on equipment, project geometry, and the fit you can reliably achieve.

How to cut a sliding dovetail with a router

  1. Prepare and mark the stock. Make sure the boards are flat and at their intended finished thickness. Mark the groove location and width, plus the mating tongue. Account for any planing or sanding still to come, since later stock removal changes the fit.
  2. Rough out the socket. Remove most of the waste with a straight bit before forming the angled sides. Fine Woodworking’s example makes a 1/2-inch-wide socket, first removing waste with a centered 1/4-inch straight bit. Those are example dimensions, not a universal specification. A Taunton guide excerpt also recommends roughing out with a straight bit before using a dovetail bit.
  3. Cut the socket profile. Use a dovetail bit to form the angled sides of the groove. Set the cut to suit the mating piece and verify the setup on scrap; the sources do not establish one bit size or angle for every joint.
  4. Cut the mating tongue. Fine Woodworking’s router-table procedure holds the board vertically against the fence and cuts the dovetail profile without changing bit height. Adjust the fence in small increments, checking the fit on test pieces as you go.
  5. Test, then make the final cuts. Sneak up on the fit with light passes rather than trying to reach the final dimension at once. Popular Woodworking’s instructions likewise emphasize sizing the mating part and allowing clearance so the pieces can slide together.

See Fine Woodworking’s router-table procedure, the Taunton guide excerpt, and Popular Woodworking’s sliding-dovetail instructions for further procedural detail.

How to cut a tapered sliding dovetail by hand

  1. Lay out the socket. Mark its position and scribe its boundaries clearly on the workpiece.
  2. Saw the socket sides and remove waste. Work carefully to the scribed lines, clearing the waste between them.
  3. Form the tongue. Use a dovetail plane to shape the key that will slide into the socket.
  4. Refine the socket. Use a router plane to bring the bottom and fit to the required dimensions, testing frequently.
  5. Introduce taper only if the assembly suits it. Tage Frid’s Fine Woodworking example uses about a 1/8-inch taper for lumber 3/4 inch or thicker. This is an attributed working example, not a standard. A tapered joint can slide in more easily from the back and tighten near the socket’s end.

How tight should the fit be?

Aim for a close fit without visible gaps that still slides along the groove under control. WOOD Magazine describes a fit that moves with a little hand pressure or light mallet taps; Fine Woodworking warns that an overly tight joint tends to jam. Canadian Woodworking also advises a gap-free fit that can slide.

  • Test on scrap made from the same stock and with the same bit and setup.
  • Take light fitting cuts rather than forcing a tight joint into place.
  • Keep the stock flat and at final thickness, or allow for how later surfacing will change the mating dimensions.
  • If the joint binds, do not drive it harder; adjust the fit incrementally and test again.

For additional fit guidance, see WOOD Magazine’s sliding-dovetail guidance and Canadian Woodworking’s instructions.

Glue and movement along the groove

The dovetail profile mechanically retains the parts, but that does not mean every joint must be glued. Glue may be used to keep a member from moving in its slot; whether that is appropriate depends on the project and whether the design requires the member to remain able to slide. Decide how the joint should behave before assembly rather than assuming glue is mandatory.
