If your Samsung refrigerator has ice but it is not dropping into the bucket, first check that the ice maker is on, the bucket is seated correctly, and ice or frost is not blocking the mechanism. If those checks do not help, run the Test cycle described for your refrigerator’s exact ice-maker configuration. The button location and reset steps differ by model, and repeatedly pressing Test after the tray fills can cause an overflow or jam.
First, identify where the problem occurs
“Not dropping ice” can describe several different faults. Check whether the maker is producing ice at all, whether formed ice remains stuck in the maker, or whether ice reaches the bucket but will not dispense. Those symptoms point to different checks.
- No ice is being made: check that the ice maker is switched on and look for a water-supply or error-code issue.
- Ice forms but does not release: inspect for a stuck bucket, an obstruction, or frost around the maker.
- The bucket has ice but the dispenser will not deliver it: check whether ice is piled in a way that blocks dispensing and whether the doors are fully closed.
Samsung’s controls and instructions vary by model. If your refrigerator has two ice makers, check the indicators and controls for both; some models have separate Ice Off indicators. Use your refrigerator’s manual and the guide for its specific ice-maker location rather than assuming one reset procedure fits every Samsung refrigerator.
Check the ice maker, bucket, and visible obstructions
Confirm the ice maker is on
Check the display or controls for an Ice Off setting or indicator. On dual-ice-maker models, make sure you have checked the control relevant to the maker that is not working.

Make sure the bucket is correctly installed
Inspect or remove the bucket only as the model’s instructions allow. Reinstall it fully; on some freezer-door models it must click into place. A flashing Ice Off icon may indicate that the bucket is not seated correctly. On dual cubed/Ice Bites models, the bucket may need to face a particular direction, with the scoop holder toward the front.
Look for objects, piled ice, or frost
The bucket should contain ice, not a scoop or other objects that could make the maker detect a full bucket. If ice is piled high enough to interfere with dispensing, level it out. Check for frost or solid ice buildup around the maker and bucket. Do not force a bucket that will not come out easily: Samsung says it may be frozen in place. If a sheet of ice covers the maker, Samsung recommends contacting support or service rather than attempting improvised heating or disassembly.

Run the Test cycle for your configuration
Use the instructions for the exact maker location. Samsung has separate guidance for freezer-door makers and for refrigerator-compartment or side-by-side freezer models. On the freezer-door configuration, instructions call for removing the bucket and locating the Test button; on newer units it is on the underside at the left, while some older units have it at the front-left. Do not use those locations as a universal rule for other configurations.
- Find the reset instructions for your refrigerator’s ice-maker configuration in the Samsung guide or the refrigerator manual.
- Follow the specified steps to access the Test button, then press and hold it until the unit chimes.
- Watch for movement and listen for the water valve to hum and fill the tray at the end of the cycle. Samsung estimates about 30 seconds for a freezer-compartment maker and about six minutes for a refrigerator-compartment maker.
- If there is no chime and no movement, turn the refrigerator off at the breaker or unplug it for two minutes, restore power, and try the Test procedure once more.
- Reinstall the bucket as directed, ensuring it is seated correctly.
Do not repeatedly press Test after the tray has filled. Samsung warns: “Do not press Test repeatedly after the ice tray is filled with ice or water. The water may overflow or the ice may jam.” A successful test shows that the mechanism responds during that cycle; it does not by itself identify why normal ice release has stopped.

Use the symptom to decide what to check next

When to contact Samsung or an appliance technician
Contact Samsung support or arrange service if the maker remains entirely unresponsive after the correctly performed Test procedure and two-minute power cycle, or if it is frozen over with a sheet of ice. Have the refrigerator’s full model number and any displayed error code ready; without them, a specific replacement part or compatible assembly cannot be identified reliably.
Samsung states in its troubleshooting guidance that a refrigerator does not need service if its ice maker is creating ice and no error code is displayed. That guidance does not establish that a persistent failure to release or dispense formed ice needs no attention, so use the model-specific troubleshooting steps for that symptom.
