Why the Liberals Pledged $37.5 Million for Kensington Courts After Labor’s $2 Million Planning Fund

The Liberals’ 2025 pledge and Labor’s earlier $2 million commitment covered different project stages: proposed construction versus planning a multi-sport facility.

The figures refer to different stages of a proposed project. In January 2025, the WA Liberals made a conditional election pledge of $37.5 million toward building a 12-court stadium in Kensington. Labor’s earlier $2 million commitment was for planning an indoor sports facility in Perth’s inner southern suburbs—not for construction.

What the $37.5 million pledge covered

PerthNow reported on 12 January 2025 that Liberal leader Libby Mettam promised $37.5 million toward building a proposed 12-court multi-sport stadium in Kensington if the party won the March 2025 state election. The pledge was conditional on election; the report does not establish that the money was later funded or spent. PerthNow’s report

The proposal was not simply a basketball venue. The WA Government described the planned indoor facility as serving hard-court sports including basketball, netball and volleyball. PerthNow reported a 12-court scope for the Liberal pledge. WA Government announcement, 8 November 2024

What Labor’s $2 million was for

In November 2024, the Cook Labor Government announced $2 million to begin planning an indoor sports facility for the inner southern suburbs. The funding was intended to assess potential locations and design options. It was planning money, not a construction allocation. WA Government announcement, 8 November 2024

The difference matters: the Liberal figure was reported as a conditional pledge toward building the proposed stadium, while Labor’s earlier commitment paid for project planning. They were not competing allocations for the same stage of work.

How the proposed site fits in

City of South Perth council minutes from 10 December 2024 record a petition seeking a 12-court indoor sporting and mixed-use facility at part of 3 Baron Hay Court, Kensington. The minutes describe the site as state-owned and home to Perth Basketball Association. They also note support for the campaign from Perth Basketball Association (the Redbacks) and Perth Reds Volleyball Association. City of South Perth council minutes, 10 December 2024

The minutes document the petition and proposal; they do not show that the council owned the site or approved construction.

Has the $37.5 million pledge been funded?

The available reporting and official records establish the pledge and the earlier planning allocation, but not the post-election funding or delivery status of the proposed facility. They do not establish that the $37.5 million is now available, that construction has begun, or that the project has been completed.
