Verdict: The Roomba Combo j9+ is still a strong choice for homes with a mixture of hard floors, rugs and carpet. Its standout feature is the Auto-Retract Mopping System, which raises the mop pad onto the top of the robot when carpet is detected instead of leaving a wet pad close to the floor. That makes it particularly appealing to households that want routine mopping without regularly wetting their rugs.
It is less compelling at its listed U.S. price of $1,399.99. The Clean Base Auto-Fill Dock empties dust and refills water, but it does not wash or dry the used mop pad. You still need to remove and wash that pad, so this is a low-maintenance robot rather than a maintenance-free one. Availability and street price vary: iRobot’s product page has indicated direct unavailability while pointing buyers to selected retailers. Check the exact U.S. SKU and current price before purchasing.

What is the Roomba Combo j9+?
The Roomba Combo j9+ is iRobot’s two-in-one robot vacuum and mop, supplied with the Clean Base Auto-Fill Dock. It should not be confused with the vacuum-only Roomba j9+.
- Roomba j9+: vacuum-only model.
- Roomba Combo j9+: vacuum-and-mop model with an Auto-Fill Dock.
- Roomba Combo j7+: an earlier hybrid with a retractable mop and a different dock and feature set.
- Roomba Combo 10 Max: a newer iRobot hybrid with an Auto-Wash dock and a more automated mop-maintenance system.
The Combo j9+ uses dual rubber main rollers, a side brush, camera-based object recognition and iRobot’s room-mapping software. Its dock has a wood-look, furniture-style top and storage space, which makes it less industrial-looking than many robot docks, but it is not small. iRobot lists the dock at approximately 15.8 × 16.4 × 16.3 inches. Measure the intended location, including clearance for opening the reservoirs and removing the robot.
The Auto-Retract mop is the main reason to buy it
On hard flooring, the mop pad lowers behind the robot so it can vacuum and mop during the same cleaning run. When the robot detects carpet, the mop assembly swings upward onto the top of the machine.
That is materially different from a conventional mop-lift design that raises a wet pad only a few millimeters. A small lift can be adequate for flat rugs, but the j9+’s approach provides a larger physical separation between the wet pad and carpet. It is especially useful in open-plan homes where a robot must cross from a kitchen or hallway onto a rug without stopping to change modes.
It is not an absolute guarantee. Thick shag, unusual textures, dark or reflective surfaces, clutter and difficult floor transitions can affect detection. Set no-mop zones around delicate rugs or anywhere a wet pad would be unacceptable, even if the robot appears to recognize the carpet correctly.
Vacuum performance: strong, but not best at every task
Independent testing supports the j9+ as a capable everyday vacuum on both hard floors and carpet. Vacuum Wars reported strong pickup and measured suction and airflow consistent with a substantial improvement over older i-series Roombas.
iRobot’s product page describes the j9+ as having “100% stronger suction” than an i-series reference model. That is a manufacturer comparison, not a standardized ranking against every competing robot. The independent pickup results are more useful for judging what the robot does in practice.

This distinction matters. “Excellent vacuum” does not mean “best at every category.” Tom’s Guide recorded stronger hardwood pet-hair performance from the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra, despite the j9+ performing very well with cereal and litter.
The dual rubber rollers help reduce the amount of hair that becomes wrapped around a conventional bristle brush, but they do not eliminate maintenance. Long hair can still collect around the rollers, wheels and edge-sweeping brush. In a pet-heavy home, inspect those areas regularly rather than relying entirely on the self-emptying dock.
Expect good everyday cleaning, but not necessarily a spotless perimeter. Furniture legs, clutter and objects the robot avoids can leave narrow strips of debris. High-traffic areas may also benefit from scheduled repeat passes, depending on the app’s current cleaning settings and the amount of dirt detected.

Mopping: effective maintenance cleaning, not manual scrubbing
The j9+’s mop is most useful for routine soil and light household messes. Vacuum Wars reported strong results on wet stains and dried grape juice, while Tom’s Guide found that it removed light food messes such as pasta sauce and melted chocolate in a single pass under default settings.
Its back-and-forth pressure-mopping motion is more purposeful than simply dragging a damp cloth behind the robot. Nevertheless, it remains a single-pad maintenance mop. It is not a replacement for removing a large spill, disinfecting a floor, deep-cleaning grout or manually treating a sticky, greasy patch.
Remove large spills before starting a run. A wet pad can spread heavy contamination, and difficult stains may need repeated passes or manual cleaning.
The important dock limitation
The dock refills the robot’s water supply, but it does not wash and dry the dirty mop pad. Tom’s Guide reported that the pad needs to be removed and washed after each cleaning session. Leaving a damp, dirty pad attached can create odor and redistribute grime during the next run.

This is the j9+’s biggest ownership compromise. It reduces daily work substantially, but it does not provide fully autonomous mop care.
What the Clean Base Auto-Fill Dock does
The dock:
- Charges the robot.
- Automatically empties the robot’s dustbin into a disposable bag.
- Refills the robot’s onboard water tank.
- Stores accessories.
iRobot claims up to 60 days of debris disposal and up to 30 days of liquid replenishment. These are estimates, not guarantees. A household with pets, litter, frequent full-floor cleaning or high dirt-detection settings may need attention much sooner.

The dock therefore provides:

You still need to wash the mop pad, maintain the clean-water reservoir, replace the dust bag, clean brushes and wheels, wipe sensors and the camera area, clear occasional obstructions, and maintain the dock and water pathways. Use only cleaning products permitted by iRobot’s current guidance; do not assume a generic floor cleaner is compatible.
Navigation, obstacle avoidance and privacy
The Combo j9+ uses camera-based recognition and other sensors to identify and avoid objects such as shoes, toys, cables, socks, furniture and pet waste. This is a major benefit for homes where floors are not cleared perfectly before every run.

That is a reviewer observation, not a guaranteed setup time. Layout, lighting, Wi-Fi, furniture and software can all affect mapping.
Obstacle avoidance is helpful rather than magical. The robot may miss an object, avoid too much space around it, or struggle with low-contrast and unusual items. Keep cables, small toys, pet bowls and potential hazards off the floor whenever possible. The Pet Owner Official Promise should be treated as a manufacturer program, not a guarantee that every accident will be detected.
Camera-based navigation can outperform less visually aware systems in cluttered rooms, but it is not the right design for everyone. If privacy is a concern, review iRobot’s current privacy documentation for the exact product and app version before purchase. Do not assume that image storage or transmission practices remain unchanged over time.
App features and Dirt Detective
iRobot’s software can map and label rooms, schedule jobs, create room-specific cleaning routines, define no-go and no-mop areas, and adjust cleaning behavior using detected dirt and cleaning history. Dirt Detective is intended to prioritize rooms that need more attention. Obstacle images can also be shown for review, and the robot supports Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri-enabled-device integrations.
These controls are particularly useful for mixed-floor homes: schedule vacuuming across the whole floor, set mopping for hard-floor rooms, and use no-mop zones where carpet detection deserves an extra safety margin.
App labels and menu paths are changeable. Follow the current iRobot app rather than relying on older screenshots or assuming that a menu has the same name after an update.

Battery life and coverage
Engadget reported that the j9+ cleaned a first floor in roughly two hours during testing and ran for about two and a half hours at one point. Those are reviewer observations, not an official guaranteed runtime.
Actual coverage varies with mop use, suction level, floor type, obstacles, repeat passes and battery age. A large or heavily furnished home may require the robot to return to the dock, recharge and resume. Recharge-and-resume behavior is more meaningful than quoting one maximum runtime figure, because the robot’s useful capacity depends on whether it completes the assigned rooms.

The Roomba Combo 10 Max is the most relevant same-brand alternative for buyers who want an Auto-Wash Evac Dock with clean- and dirty-water tanks. Current pricing, stock and software history should be checked independently.
Premium Roborock, Dreame, Narwal and Eufy models commonly emphasize spinning or dual mop pads, automatic washing, warm-air drying, dirty-water collection and more automated dock care. They may be better for hard-floor homes where reducing mop maintenance is the top priority. The j9+ may still win for buyers who prefer iRobot’s mapping experience, obstacle avoidance, dual rubber rollers and carpet-safe retracting design.
A strong vacuum-only robot paired with a conventional mop can also be the better-value option. It offers specialization and more effective manual stain cleaning, but gives up the convenience of one automated cleaning routine.
Who should buy the Roomba Combo j9+?
- Buy it when your home has both carpet and hard flooring and keeping rugs dry is a central concern.
- Buy it when you value obstacle avoidance for cables, toys and everyday clutter.
- Buy it when you prefer iRobot’s room mapping, scheduling and voice-control ecosystem.
- Buy it when strong vacuuming matters more than automatic mop washing.
- Buy it when you find it substantially below the listed $1,399.99 price and accept washing the pad yourself.
Who should skip it?
- Skip it if “hands-free” means you expect the robot to wash and dry its own mop.
- Skip it if your home is mostly hard flooring and deep stain removal is your main priority.
- Skip it at near-full price if a newer self-washing competitor offers the maintenance automation you actually want.
- Skip it if thick shag or unusual rugs make carpet detection unreliable.
- Skip it if you do not want camera-based navigation.
- Skip it if the dock’s roughly 16-inch footprint and height cannot fit safely in the intended location.
Final verdict
The Roomba Combo j9+ is not universally “the ideal” robot vacuum and mop. It is a particularly well-considered choice for a specific home: one with mixed floors, area rugs, everyday clutter and an owner who wants dependable vacuuming plus routine mopping without dragging a wet pad over carpet.
Its Auto-Retract Mopping System remains its clearest advantage. Its biggest weakness is equally clear: the dock handles dust and water but leaves mop-pad washing to you. At full list price, buy it only if the retracting mop, iRobot ecosystem and obstacle avoidance outweigh the absence of self-washing. At a major discount, its balance of vacuum performance, carpet protection and convenience becomes much more persuasive.
