Samsung Bespoke AI Refrigerator Review: Brilliant Kitchen Hub or Expensive Tablet?

Samsung’s Bespoke AI refrigerator is a premium appliance with a smart-home display, not an all-knowing food tracker. Its best features are useful, but the price, software dependence and incomplete AI coverage matter.

Verdict: Samsung’s Bespoke AI refrigerator is a premium refrigerator wrapped around a large smart-home display. Its best features are the 32-inch Family Hub+, flexible storage, AutoFill water pitcher, Beverage Center, and SmartThings integration. AI Vision Inside is useful, but it does not track everything in the refrigerator. The camera’s coverage, food-recognition accuracy, software dependence, and very high price make this a compelling choice mainly for tech-oriented households that will use the connected features every day.

This review concerns a high-end U.S. Bespoke AI refrigerator reviewed by Engadget in the second half of 2025. Samsung’s lineup and software changed during 2026, so check the exact model number and feature list before buying. The current 29-cu.-ft.-class reference model is the RF90F29AECRAA family, including finish variants such as RF90F29AEWAA.

What is the Samsung Bespoke AI refrigerator?

“Samsung Bespoke fridge with AI” is a product family, not one universal refrigerator. Samsung sells four-door French Door and four-door Flex configurations, full-depth and counter-depth versions, models with a 32-inch Family Hub+ display, models with a smaller 9-inch AI Home screen, and versions with different combinations of Beverage Center, AutoFill and viewing-panel features.

The current U.S. 29-cu.-ft.-class 4-Door French Door reference model has approximately 28.6 cu. ft. of capacity, a 32-inch display, an internal camera, a FlexZone drawer, an AutoFill pitcher, Beverage Center access and dual ice-making. Samsung lists 16.5 cu. ft. for the refrigerator compartment, 9 cu. ft. for the freezer and 3.1 cu. ft. for the FlexZone drawer. See the current consumer specifications before treating those figures as applicable to another SKU.

The 32-inch Family Hub+ is the main attraction

The Family Hub+ screen turns the refrigerator door into a large kitchen information center. It can display recipes, photos, calendars, reminders, weather and household information; stream music and video; show food-inventory information; and control compatible SmartThings devices. Bixby voice control can operate supported refrigerator and smart-home functions.

The screen is large enough to be visible from across a kitchen, which makes it more practical than a phone for following a recipe or checking a reminder while cooking. It can also give a family a shared place for calendars and household notes. For a SmartThings household, having controls built into the appliance may be genuinely convenient.

But the display is also the feature most likely to feel unnecessary. Typing on a refrigerator door is less convenient than using a phone, and many families will prefer an existing tablet or smart display for video, recipes and calendars. Apps and services can change over the refrigerator’s much longer mechanical life. Samsung has announced expanded food recognition, improved Bixby controls, personalized widgets and recipe-related features for select 32-inch Family Hub models during 2026, but an announcement for the Bespoke AI family does not guarantee identical availability on every model or in every region. See Samsung’s 2026 Family Hub update announcement for the supported-model qualification.

What the “AI” actually does

The AI label covers several separate functions:

  • AI Vision Inside: An internal camera identifies and tracks selected foods as they enter or leave the main refrigerator compartment.
  • Food and recipe assistance: Food information can feed Samsung’s SmartThings Food and recipe workflows.
  • Bixby: Supported voice commands can control the refrigerator and connected devices.
  • Personalized content: Newer software updates add or expand widgets, food recognition and recipe features on selected models.

That is a more useful description than saying the refrigerator “knows what is in your fridge.” AI Vision is an inventory assistant, not a complete automated pantry system.

AI Vision Inside: useful, but incomplete

The most important limitation from Engadget’s review is camera coverage. On the tested refrigerator, AI Vision tracked food in the main refrigerator cabinet but did not record items stored in the FlexZone drawer, freezer or door bins. A carton placed in the main compartment might appear in the inventory while food in the door beside it does not. This makes the inventory incomplete even when recognition works perfectly.

Recognition is also selective. Packaging, opaque containers, leftovers, bags and similar-looking products can be difficult for a camera to classify. An item can be missed if it is obscured, placed quickly or removed without the system registering the movement. Users may need to correct labels or enter foods manually, and a household that frequently rearranges shelves can make the inventory less dependable.

The system is better understood as a reminder and shopping aid than as an authority. It may help answer, “Did we already use the spinach?” while you are at the store, but it cannot reliably answer, “What is everything in the refrigerator, freezer, drawers and doors?” The dossier does not establish that it measures precise quantities; readers should assume item presence and recognition are the practical functions unless the exact model’s software documentation says otherwise.

Samsung has described expanded recognition for processed foods, user-labeled items, personal containers and wine labels in newer announcements. Those capabilities depend on model, region and software rollout. Earlier Samsung documentation also described recognition of a limited selection of fresh foods rather than universal recognition. Check the model guide and current software details for the refrigerator you are considering.

Design, storage and everyday usability

The four-door layout separates the upper refrigerator section, lower freezer section and central FlexZone drawer. The arrangement can make frequently used foods easier to reach than a conventional bottom-freezer design, while the separate drawer gives the owner more control over how the space is used.

The FlexZone has five temperature settings intended for categories such as drinks, produce, deli items, meat and seafood, and soft-frozen foods. That flexibility may deliver more daily value than recipe videos or novelty apps: the drawer can become a dedicated beverage area one week and extra food storage the next.

It is not a perfect solution. The FlexZone was also outside the reviewed AI Vision coverage, so the space that is most configurable is not necessarily represented in the food inventory. Door bins and the freezer require the same manual organization that they would in an ordinary refrigerator. Buyers should also inspect the actual interior layout in a showroom or detailed installation guide; advertised capacity does not tell you whether shelves, bins and drawers suit your household’s containers.

  • FLEX AUTO DISPENSE SYSTEM: Automatically dispense up to 47 loads of detergent or flex one compartment to dispense up to 34 loads of softener and 25 loads of detergent.

The current full-depth reference model is approximately 35.75 inches wide, 70.25 inches high and 34.25 inches deep. Samsung lists additional clearances for ventilation and door opening. Measure the kitchen opening, ceiling height, wall clearance, door swing, hallway, stairway and delivery route—not just the cabinet width. A counter-depth variant may sit more neatly with cabinetry but can sacrifice usable storage, and the dimensions and features differ by SKU.

Convenience features that may matter more than AI

FlexZone

The five temperature settings make the FlexZone a practical organizational tool. It is especially useful for households whose storage needs change frequently or that want a separate area for drinks and deli food. Its value does not depend on cloud services, although the exact controls and capacity vary by model.

AutoFill pitcher and Beverage Center

An AutoFill pitcher can keep chilled, filtered water ready without repeatedly filling a jug. Beverage Center designs provide easier access to drinks and water while limiting how often the main refrigerator door is opened. These are physical conveniences that many owners may use more often than the AI features. Filters are a recurring expense; Samsung’s observed listing showed a six-month filter pack at $44.99, but verify the exact filter and current price.

Auto Open Door

Auto Open Door is designed for hands-free access when your hands are wet or full. Before buying, confirm how the sensor works on the exact model and whether its location suits your kitchen. Consider accidental activation by children or pets, the clearance needed for the door, and how the door can be opened manually if power or electronics fail. A convenience sensor should not be the reason a refrigerator becomes difficult to use in an outage.

Ice and water

Dual ice-making and filtered water can be valuable for a large household, but water systems and ice makers add components that may eventually require service. Compare the desired convenience with the cost and availability of filters, parts and local repair support.

Cooling, noise and energy: do not let the screen dominate the review

The smart features do not automatically improve cooling. Judge the appliance separately on temperature consistency, noise, shelf access, freezer organization, door-bin capacity, ice performance and usable storage. The available dossier does not provide independent measurements for noise or temperature stability, so those should not be presented as tested results.

Samsung lists the current reference configuration as ENERGY STAR certified with annual energy consumption of 663 kWh. That is a model-specific label figure, not a guarantee that every Bespoke refrigerator uses the same amount. Samsung also says viewing features such as AutoView can reduce cold-air loss by letting users see inside without opening the main door; that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently measured saving. The AI itself should not be treated as an energy-saving feature.

Connectivity, offline use and privacy

Family Hub and related smart functions generally require Wi-Fi, a Samsung account, the SmartThings app, compatible services and ongoing software support. The core refrigeration system is separate from those services: a Wi-Fi outage should not stop the refrigerator from cooling, but remote monitoring, cloud features, food-management workflows and some voice functions may become unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Setup can also be interrupted by a changed router, lost account access, altered SmartThings permissions or an update. Voice commands require network access and supported phrasing. AP coverage of Samsung’s CES demonstrations reported that voice recognition was not always reliable in noisy environments, a relevant limitation in a busy kitchen. Do not expect Bixby to replace physical controls for every task.

This refrigerator also introduces a more serious privacy question than an ordinary appliance. It contains an internal camera, microphones, a touchscreen and connected services that may handle food images, voice commands, household photos, calendars, shopping habits and smart-home controls. Before installation:

  • Review the refrigerator’s privacy settings and SmartThings permissions.
  • Check whether the camera and microphones can be disabled independently.
  • Decide which household members can access inventory, photos, calendars and connected devices.
  • Use strong, unique Samsung-account credentials and secure home Wi-Fi.
  • Read Samsung’s current account, SmartThings and privacy documentation for the exact model.

The relevant risk is not only targeted advertising. A connected kitchen device can reveal household routines and shopping patterns, and a shared screen may expose information to anyone in the home. Buyers who do not want that trade-off should choose a non-connected refrigerator.

Price, warranty and long-term ownership

Samsung’s U.S. product pages listed a regular price of $4,699 for the 29-cu.-ft.-class AI Family Hub model, while observed promotional pages showed approximately $3,299 to $3,399 depending on finish, account type and promotion. Prices are volatile; treat those figures as a dated reference and confirm the checkout price, delivery charge, installation terms and haul-away cost before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The current listing shows a one-year standard appliance warranty. Samsung also displayed optional Care+ pricing of $69.99 for three years, $139.99 for five years and $399.99 for seven years on one observed page, while limited-time promotions offered one-year warranty extensions for qualifying purchases. These offers and prices are eligibility- and date-sensitive.

Extended coverage deserves more consideration here than it would for a basic refrigerator because the appliance combines cooling hardware with a large display, cameras, microphones, water equipment and software-dependent electronics. However, compare the plan with retailer protection, exclusions, deductibles, service response and your local authorized-provider network. Samsung service quality cannot be assumed to be uniform nationwide. Confirm that a provider can service your model in your area before delivery.

Water filters, repairs and possible electronics replacement belong in the total-cost calculation. The refrigerator should still cool if the screen or camera fails, but the smart experience may be substantially reduced. Samsung has not promised that every app or cloud feature will remain unchanged for the refrigerator’s entire mechanical life.

How it compares with the alternatives

A cheaper Bespoke refrigerator

Samsung’s lineup includes Bespoke refrigerators with smaller 9-inch AI Home displays and models without the large Family Hub screen. Depending on the SKU, these may retain food-management, recipe and Bixby features while removing the large entertainment and household-information hub. Compare the actual price difference at purchase time rather than assuming a fixed saving.

A conventional premium refrigerator

If your priority is cooling, storage, ice, water and serviceability, a conventional premium refrigerator may provide the better value. You give up integrated food recognition and the built-in screen, but you avoid paying a large premium for functions you may rarely use.

A refrigerator plus a separate tablet

A separate tablet or smart display can handle recipes, calendars, music, video and smart-home controls, and it can be replaced without replacing the refrigerator. It will not reproduce the internal-camera inventory, integrated Auto Open Door or refrigerator-specific controls, but it separates the replacement cycles and may be cheaper for households that already own suitable hardware.

A competing smart refrigerator

Compare ecosystems rather than counting screens. Examine camera coverage, supported foods, account requirements, voice assistant, privacy controls, service network, warranty and whether the inventory includes doors, drawers and freezer compartments. A convincing product demonstration is not evidence of comprehensive tracking.

Who should buy it?

Buy it if:

  • You genuinely want a large kitchen display and will use it frequently.
  • Your household already uses SmartThings or intends to build around it.
  • Food inventory and recipe workflows solve a real daily problem.
  • The FlexZone, AutoFill pitcher, Beverage Center and hands-free access fit your routine.
  • You accept cloud-connected cameras and microphones.
  • You have verified the exact model, clearance, delivery route and local repair support.
  • The discounted price makes the smart features worthwhile.

Skip it if:

  • You mainly want reliable cooling and freezer storage.
  • You do not want a Samsung account, Wi-Fi appliance or cloud-dependent features.
  • You expect AI to track every item and every compartment.
  • You already own a tablet that handles recipes and household information.
  • You have limited clearance or a difficult delivery path.
  • You are uncomfortable with expensive integrated electronics or uncertain software longevity.

Final verdict

The Samsung Bespoke AI refrigerator is not a refrigerator transformed by artificial intelligence. It is a high-end refrigerator with a capable smart-home hub and a promising but incomplete food-inventory system.

The FlexZone, water and beverage features, four-door organization and large Family Hub+ screen can make it genuinely useful for the right household. AI Vision is a convenience layer that can reduce some guesswork, but its limited camera coverage and selective recognition mean you will still need your own inventory habits.

At a substantial discount, it can make sense for a technology-focused family that will use SmartThings, recipes, food tracking and the screen every day. For reliability-first, privacy-sensitive or value-focused shoppers, a less expensive Bespoke model—or a conventional refrigerator paired with a separate tablet—is the safer purchase.
