A raised-panel cabinet door has a center panel whose shaped field stands proud of a thinner perimeter captured inside a surrounding frame. That profile adds visible depth; a recessed-panel door instead has a center panel that sits behind the frame face. The details of joinery, profile and material vary by maker, so compare the actual construction—not just the style name—when choosing or replacing doors.
What is a raised-panel cabinet door?
A common cabinet-door design uses four frame boards around a center panel. The vertical frame members are called stiles, and the horizontal members are rails. Together with the center panel, they make a five-piece door. The panel’s edges are machined thinner so they fit within the frame; its visible field rises toward the frame’s front plane. Cabinetdoors.com describes this frame-and-panel construction and profile.

Raised-panel doors are a style choice rather than a single specification. Manufacturers can vary the panel shape, frame profile, dimensions, materials and joinery. Ask for the construction details of the specific door you are considering.

The central distinction is the panel’s position relative to the frame: a raised panel projects toward the frame face, while a recessed or inset panel sits back from it. The contrast is primarily visual, not a guarantee of a particular material, joint, cost or service life.

How are raised-panel doors made?
The panel profile may be hand carved, cut with power-routing equipment, or shaped using computerized woodworking equipment. A router table is one approach described in a woodworking guide to making raised-panel doors; it is not the only method.

With solid wood, changing ambient humidity can cause a panel to expand or contract. The Architectural Woodwork Institute’s ANSI/AWI 1232-2022 manufactured-casework aesthetic requirements state: “Regardless of retention method, panels shall have adequate space to move, float, expand or contract as a result of ambient humidity changes.” The excerpt does not give one clearance dimension for every design. Follow the maker’s construction and installation specifications rather than assuming a universal gap or that a particular design cannot crack or warp.
What router bits do I need to make raised-panel doors?
A raised-panel router-bit set is a plausible starting point for a router-based build, but the sources do not establish a particular brand, bit size, profile, price or compatibility. A bit that suits one router, table, material and design may not suit another. Before buying or cutting, confirm the router and bit specifications, setup requirements and safe operating instructions with their manufacturers.

Can I replace just my cabinet doors?
Raised-panel replacement cabinet doors are offered as a product category by cabinet-door suppliers; the style can suit a project seeking a more decorative look, though that preference is not universal. Cabinetdoors.com discusses raised panels as a style option and replacement-door choice.
Before ordering, measure the existing doors and confirm the supplier’s requirements for sizing, hinge boring, overlay, finish and lead time. Those requirements differ by supplier and are not established as universal specifications here. Check that the replacement’s profile and finish work with the surrounding cabinetry, and ask how its construction allows for panel movement.
