Table saw safety depends on keeping hands away from the blade, controlling the stock so it cannot bind or twist, and using the saw’s guards and other safeguards as intended. Before each cut, check the machine, blade, workpiece, and support; during the cut, keep your body out of the blade’s line and use a push stick or other suitable aid when needed. Wait for the blade to stop before clearing the saw.

What can go wrong on a table saw?

The main hazards are contact with the blade at the point of operation; contact with the blade or transmission parts beneath the table; kickback; and flying chips or broken teeth. OSHA outlines these hazards in its table-saw guidance.

Kickback happens when wood binds or twists against the blade and is thrown back toward the operator. It can be made more likely by missing safeguards, an improperly set or poorly maintained blade, or defective stock. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission page reports historical special-study estimates of 38,000 table-saw injuries in 2001 and 38,980 in 2002; those dated figures are not current annual injury counts. See the CPSC power-tools page.

What to check before you cut

  • Safeguards: Confirm that the guard, spreader or riving-knife assembly, fence, and other applicable safety devices are installed correctly and functioning. OSHA advises against operating woodworking equipment when its guard or another required safety device is not working properly; see its woodworking kickback guidance.
  • Blade and speed: Choose a blade suited to the operation. OSHA cautions against using a crosscut blade for ripping. Use the operating speed specified by the saw manufacturer, and keep the blade maintained and sharp. Remove a cracked blade from service.
  • Stock: Inspect the workpiece for defects that could cause it to bind or twist. Do not force unsuitable stock through the blade.
  • Support: Plan support for the incoming and outgoing material, including the scrap and finished piece, so the stock remains controlled throughout the cut.
  • Cut guidance: Use a fence or gauge appropriate to the operation; do not freehand-saw on a table saw.

How to control the stock during a cut

Keep hands out of the cut line

Keep hands away from the blade’s path. Use a push stick for small pieces and when feeding stock past the blade; a push block or other suitable hand tool can also help maintain distance from the point of operation. Select the tool for the stock and cut rather than reaching close to the blade.

Ripping and kickback control

When ripping, guide the stock parallel to the fence and use the appropriate spreader and anti-kickback fingers. Stand to the side of the blade rather than directly behind the workpiece, reducing exposure if stock is thrown back. Keep the work supported and moving steadily; if it binds or shifts, do not reach toward the blade to correct it.

Guards and operation-specific aids

A featherboard or suitable jig may be useful for a particular operation where a guard cannot be used, but that is not blanket permission to remove a guard or make an unsafe cut. Follow the saw’s instructions and applicable safety guidance. Any replacement guard, spreader, or riving knife must be compatible with the specific saw; compatibility cannot be assumed across machines.

  • APPLICATIONS: Push blocks are commonly used for face jointing, ripping plywood, routing and other woodworking applications and push sticks are commonly used in combination with jointers, tablesaws, router tables and shapers.
  • DELUXE GRIP: Features an easy grip ergonomic handle that’s safe, easy to work with and feels natural in the hand; This premium safety push block and stick package was designed for durability, maximum control and engineered with a safety first approach to woodworking.

Scrap and sawdust

Do not reach near the blade to remove a finished piece or scrap, and do not clear sawdust or debris by hand while the machine is running. Wait until the blade has stopped before clearing the table or retrieving material.

What to do after switching the saw off

Cutting power does not stop the blade instantly: it may coast. Use a functioning brake if the saw has one, or remain at the station until the blade stops completely. Do not reach into the blade area or clean the saw while it is running or coasting.

When not to proceed

  • A guard or other applicable safety device is missing, incorrectly installed, or not functioning.
  • The blade is cracked, damaged, unsuitable for the cut, or not maintained.
  • The stock is defective or cannot be supported and controlled through the cut.
  • You cannot keep your hands clear of the cut line or use the appropriate safeguards and work-handling method.

Stop and correct the condition before operating the saw. For machine-specific setup, consult the manufacturer’s instructions; OSHA’s woodworking guidance provides the general safeguards and handling principles.
