Portable Table Saws: How to Choose the Right Jobsite Model

“Portable” ranges from a compact hand-carried saw to a 94-pound saw-and-stand setup. Compare rip capacity, cutting depth, complete moving weight, and safety equipment before choosing.

A portable table saw is a useful fit when its cutting capacity, complete moving weight, power source, and safety setup match the work you actually do. “Portable” can mean a hand-carried compact saw or a heavier worksite saw moved on a stand, so compare specifications and accessories rather than relying on the label or blade diameter alone.

What to compare before choosing a portable table saw

Start with the cuts and materials you expect to handle. A large blade does not automatically mean greater sheet-material capacity: check maximum depth of cut and rip capacity, and assess whether the fence and supports suit your workflow. Manufacturer specifications are useful for comparing stated capabilities, but they do not establish real-world cutting accuracy or durability.

  • Cutting capacity: Check depth at the relevant blade angle, plus rip capacity to the right and left of the blade. If you plan to rip full-size sheet goods, confirm that the listed capacity covers the cut.
  • Fence and support: Look at how the fence adjusts and what support is included for wider workpieces. Product pages may list outfeed or side supports separately from the basic saw.
  • Moving weight: Compare bare-saw weight, stand weight, and the weight of the complete setup you will move. “Portable” is not a standardized weight class.
  • Power configuration: Distinguish corded models from cordless ones, and verify whether a battery and charger are included in the exact kit and regional model.
  • Safety equipment: Check what guard, riving knife, anti-kickback pawls, and push stick are supplied, and whether the manual describes different setups for different cuts.
  • Compatibility and cleanup: Confirm blade diameter and arbor dimensions in the manual before buying a replacement blade. Check dust-port and accessory compatibility rather than assuming an adapter or support is included.

Manufacturer-listed examples and specifications

These three models illustrate different trade-offs in capacity and transport. Their figures below come from manufacturer product information, not independent comparative testing.

Model Blade and power Stated cut capacity Weight Notable listed details
DEWALT DWE7485 8¼-inch blade; 15A; 5,800 RPM 24.5-inch rip capacity Not stated on the cited product page Rack-and-pinion telescoping fence, on-board storage, power-loss reset, blade brake, and modular guard system. Included components listed: blade, non-through-cut riving knife, guard system, anti-kickback pawls, miter gauge, and push stick. DEWALT says its rip capacity allows ripping 4-by-8 plywood or OSB. DEWALT product page
SawStop CTS-120A60 10-inch blade; 15A; 4,000 no-load RPM Maximum depth: 3⅛ inches at 0°, 2⅛ inches at 45°; rip capacity: 24½ inches right, 9½ inches left 68 pounds SawStop says its contact-activated system stops a spinning blade in less than five milliseconds; this is the manufacturer’s claim and does not mean all injury risk is eliminated. Optional folding stand. SawStop CTS product page
Bosch 4100XC-10 10-inch blade; 120V; 15A Maximum depth: 3⅛ inches at 90°; rip capacity: 30 inches right, 8.5 inches left 58 pounds bare saw; 94 pounds with standard stand Listed compatible items include a dust hose/adapter, dust bag, inserts, outfeed support, and left-side support. How the examples differ in practical terms

For a compact, hand-manageable setup

The DWE7485 is presented by DEWALT as a compact portable jobsite saw. Its 24.5-inch rip capacity is the key stated sheet-ripping figure, while the included guard system, pawls, riving knife, and push stick make it important to review which setup is appropriate for the cut. The manufacturer lists a three-year limited warranty, one year of free service, and a 90-day satisfaction guarantee; check the product page for terms that apply to your purchase.

  • POWERFUL 15A MOTOR - Power for a range of applications like ripping down sheets of plywood, cross-cutting 2x4s for framing, cutting dado joints, and more
  • COMPACT SIZE - Portable for easy transportation and storage

For a 10-inch blade with active blade-contact technology

The CTS combines a 10-inch blade and 24½-inch right rip capacity with a 68-pound listed weight. SawStop describes the saw as its smallest and most portable model and says it “Stops a spinning blade on contact with skin.” That is a manufacturer safety claim, not a guarantee against injury. SawStop lists a two-year warranty with registration and an optional folding stand. Its portable table saw lineup provides the broader product category.

For greater stated rip capacity with a substantial stand setup

The Bosch 4100XC-10 lists a 30-inch right rip capacity, larger than the other two examples shown, but its combined saw-and-standard-stand weight is 94 pounds. The bare saw is listed at 58 pounds. That difference is a reminder to evaluate the full setup you will transport, not just the machine by itself.

Match the safety setup to the cut

Guards and related components vary by model and by cut setup. A guard, riving knife, anti-kickback pawls, and push stick have distinct roles; use the saw manual for their intended installation and operation, blade changes, and approved accessories. Never infer safe operation from a product-page feature list alone.

A 2023 Federal Register publication discussed table-saw blade-contact injuries and described riving knives and modular blade guards as safety measures. It was a proposed-rule document, not evidence by itself of a final current mandatory standard; the document should not be treated as proof of current law. Read the 2023 Federal Register proposal.

What product specifications cannot tell you

Manufacturer-published figures help establish stated capacity, weight, and included components. They do not independently establish fence repeatability, cut accuracy, durability, noise, dust-collection effectiveness, or how easy a saw is to move on a real worksite. The available product information also does not establish current price or stock, so verify those details with the seller for your location and exact model.
