How to identify Phillips and Pozidriv

Look closely at the screw head, then check the label on the bit. Tool makers sell the profiles separately: Wera, for example, labels its 350 PH screwdriver for Phillips screws and its 355 PZ SB screwdriver for Pozidriv screws.

Why the right profile matters
A Phillips bit may sit in a Pozidriv recess, but Fine Homebuilding warns that it is likely to cam out before the fastener is fully tightened, potentially damaging the recess. A loose fit is not proof that every mismatched screw will immediately strip: the result depends on the fit, the condition of the parts and the force applied. Still, do not rely on a cross-profile fit when the correct bit is available.

Choose and check the bit in four steps
- Inspect the recess. Look for four small extra marks around the cross; their presence points to Pozidriv.
- Select the profile. Choose a PZ bit for those marks. If they are absent and the head is a conventional Phillips cross, choose PH.
- Match the size as well as the profile. Do not assume a PH and PZ bit with the same number are interchangeable. The sources cited here do not establish a universal size-conversion chart.
- Check the seating before applying torque. The bit should sit firmly rather than rock or feel loose. If it does, recheck both the profile and size.
If you use both profiles
A mixed bit set can keep labeled PH and PZ options together. Wiha documents a 13-piece FlipSelector T set containing Phillips, Pozidriv and TORX bits. Choose a set whose bit labels are clear so you can match the drive rather than guess from the shape alone.
For electrical work, Wiha also lists a separate insulated slimBit electric set with both Phillips and Pozidriv sizes. Use insulated tools only when appropriate for the work; their presence in a set does not replace safe electrical procedures or the need to select the matching profile and size.
