First, identify the stain, check whether it is wet or hardened, and read the garment’s care label. The right treatment differs: hardened wax needs lifting before any residue treatment; wet water-based paint should be rinsed promptly; oil-based paint requires the thinner named on its can; and water-based craft glue can be scraped, pre-treated, and laundered. Treat each mark separately, and do not machine-dry the garment until you have checked that the stain is gone.
Before treating any stain, check the garment
Care labels tell you how to wash and dry an item and whether treatments such as heat are suitable. The Federal Trade Commission’s Care Labeling Rule requires warnings when a prescribed regular-care method could harm the garment. Follow the label before applying heat, bleach, solvents, or a particular wash temperature.

- Identify whether the mark is wax, paint, or glue, and whether it is still wet.
- Lift solid material gently with a dull spoon or similar edge; avoid rubbing it into the fabric.
- Check the garment and cleaning-product labels. Test any cleaning product on an inconspicuous area first, as University of Georgia Extension advises in its candle-wax guidance.
- If the item is delicate or dry-clean-only, or you cannot identify an oil-based material, do not improvise with a solvent. Seek advice appropriate to the garment.
Keep cleaning products out of children’s reach. A color-safe laundry stain remover may be useful for pre-treatment when its label and the garment’s care label allow it; follow both sets of directions.
How to remove candle wax from clothes
Harden and lift the wax
Let soft wax harden, then gently scrape away what you can with a dull edge. Wax can leave a greasy residue, and colored wax may also leave color behind, so removing the raised wax is only the first step. See Persil’s wax-stain guidance.

Use heat only when the care label permits it
Some cleaning guidance uses absorbent paper and a warm iron to draw out wax left in the fabric. The American Cleaning Institute describes this approach in its stain-removal guide; Clorox also describes a paper-and-iron method in its wax-removal instructions. Do not use an iron unless the garment label allows the heat. If heat is not permitted, skip this method rather than risk damaging the fabric.
Pre-treat, wash, and inspect
After lifting the wax, pre-treat any remaining mark with a product suitable for the garment, then wash according to its care label. Air-dry and inspect the spot before using a dryer; if residue remains, repeat an appropriate treatment rather than setting the stain with dryer heat. The American Cleaning Institute’s guide advises keeping stained items out of the dryer until the stain is removed.

How to remove paint from kids’ clothes
Water-based paint: rinse while it is wet
Rinse wet water-based paint promptly, then launder according to the garment’s care label. The American Cleaning Institute notes that dried paint may not be removable in its paint-stain guidance. Once it has dried, avoid assuming a stronger or hotter treatment will solve it; use only methods allowed for the fabric.
Oil-based paint: follow the paint-can label
There is no universal solvent to recommend for oil-based paint. Use only the thinner specified on the paint can label, and check that the garment’s care instructions permit the treatment. If the paint type is unknown or the clothing is delicate, stop and seek garment-appropriate advice rather than trying an improvised solvent. The American Cleaning Institute directs users to the thinner specified by the paint manufacturer.

How to remove water-based craft glue
Scrape excess and pre-treat
Gently scrape off excess glue without spreading it. Apply a prewash treatment that is suitable for the garment and follow its product directions. The American Cleaning Institute’s craft-cleanup guidance specifically recommends scraping excess water-based craft glue and pre-treating the mark.
Wash at a fabric-safe temperature
Launder using the warmest setting the garment label allows. Advice from Clorox to use the hottest recommended setting and air-dry is manufacturer-specific; it does not override the garment or product label. Air-dry and inspect the stain before using a dryer. If it remains, repeat a suitable pre-treatment and wash rather than machine-drying over the residue.

What to do after washing
Check the treated area while the garment is still air-drying. If you can still see or feel residue, do not put the item in a machine dryer; choose an appropriate treatment for that particular stain and fabric, then wash and inspect again. Wax, paint, and glue require different approaches, so do not apply one stain’s method to another.
