Why the Right Screwdriver Bit Helps Prevent Stripped Screw Heads

The right screwdriver bit must match the screw’s profile and size. Learn how firm fit, straight alignment, bit wear, and controlled torque help prevent cam-out and stripped heads.

To reduce the chance of stripping a screw, match the bit to both the screw’s drive profile and its size. A bit that seats firmly, held straight and driven with controlled torque, is less likely to slip out and damage the recess. The right bit matters, but it cannot compensate for a worn tip, poor alignment, or excessive force.

How the wrong bit damages a screw

Cam-out is what happens when a driver slips out of the screw recess as torque is applied. The bit can round out the recess, wear its own tip, or scrape nearby material. With Phillips screws, the tapered profile can convert some of the applied force into an outward push, making the driver more prone to climbing out when engagement is poor. STAHLWILLE explains the cam-out effect; Axminster Tools also identifies worn tips and force applied out of line with the shank as contributors.

Choose the matching profile and size

First identify the shape of the screw recess; then choose the corresponding bit type and size. The tip should fill the recess and seat firmly rather than rocking or sitting loosely. A bit that is too large or too small may not engage properly and can damage the head. Test the fit before driving. iFixit’s bit guide recommends a size that fills the screw head entirely.

Phillips and Pozidriv are not the same

Both have a cross-shaped recess, so they are easy to confuse, but their profiles differ. Don’t select a bit from the cross shape alone: inspect the screw for identifying features or markings, then check that the correctly identified bit seats firmly. The Phillips Screw Company describes Pozidriv as designed for better mating with the driver and reduced cam-out at higher torques. Its Pozidriv technical page explains the drive’s features.

Phillips and JIS can also look alike

Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) screws and Phillips screws may be mistaken for one another. Their bits are different and are not always interchangeable. iFixit notes that Phillips is designed to cam out if too much torque is applied, while JIS lacks that feature. Identify the drive rather than assuming a Phillips bit will fit every cross-shaped recess. iFixit’s guide covers the distinction.

Recognize Torx without treating it as foolproof

Torx has a distinctive star-shaped recess. STAHLWILLE describes its more parallel flanks as providing better grip than most other drive profiles and transmitting force over a greater surface area. That design does not make a screw impossible to strip: a mismatched or worn bit, off-axis driving, and excessive torque can still cause damage. STAHLWILLE’s explanation compares the profiles.

Keep the bit seated while driving

  • Check for wear. Replace a tip that is visibly rounded, chipped, or otherwise worn; it may no longer make full contact with the recess.
  • Keep the driver in line. Hold the bit and screw on the same axis. Driving at an angle reduces contact and makes slipping more likely.
  • Maintain firm engagement. Seat the bit fully before applying force, and avoid continuing if it repeatedly slips. Recheck the profile and size rather than trying to make a poor fit work.

A magnetic bit holder can retain a bit and help hold a standard steel screw in a confined space. It is a convenience for access and handling, not a substitute for choosing the correct bit. Axminster Tools describes this use.

Control torque with a drill driver

Set the drill driver’s clutch to suit the screw and material; there is no single setting that works for every job. Stop once the screw is seated. If it continues turning after it should be in place, it may be driven too deep or keep rotating after its threads have lost their bite, damaging the head’s driving lands. Axminster Tools’ guidance on screwdriver bits explains why a suitable clutch setting helps avoid unnecessary damage.

When the screw resists in wood

If a screw is difficult to drive, more force is not always the answer. Dense timber or a position near a board edge can increase resistance and the risk of splitting. Depending on the screw, wood, and task, pilot and clearance holes can reduce resistance and lateral pressure; lubrication may also help with some woodscrews. Hole dimensions depend on the specific combination, so don’t treat an example size as universal. Axminster Tools discusses these options.

A quick check before driving

  1. Identify the screw’s drive profile rather than guessing from a general resemblance.
  2. Select the matching bit type and a size that fills the recess and seats firmly.
  3. Inspect the tip for wear and position the driver straight in line with the screw.
  4. For powered driving, choose a clutch setting appropriate to the material and stop when the screw is seated.
  5. If driving remains difficult in wood, consider whether a suitable pilot or clearance hole would reduce resistance.
