Don’t pull on the animal or assume it is safe to cut it free: struggling can worsen an injury, and the right response depends on the species and situation. If a bat may have touched a person, contact local public health promptly.
What to do first
- Keep your distance. Move children and pets away. Don’t grab the animal, pull on it, or tug at the decoration. A frightened wild animal may bite or scratch, and struggling can cause further injury.
- Call for species-appropriate help. Contact a local wildlife rehabilitator and explain what animal is involved, what material it is caught in, whether it can move, and whether you can see an injury. If it is safe to do so, a photo or video from a distance may help the professional assess the situation. The BC SPCA’s wild-animal rescue guidance is for British Columbia; elsewhere, contact the local service or wildlife authority.
- Follow the responder’s instructions. Don’t try to capture an animal if doing so could put you at risk. This is especially important with large birds and adult mammals.
If a bird is caught in fake spiderweb
Don’t pull the bird out of the webbing. The BC SPCA warns that pulling can injure delicate feathers and wings. Its guidance describes cutting webbing around an entangled bird, but also advises calling a rehabilitator for animals caught in netting or wire and getting advice before cutting an animal loose. Treat cutting as a situation-specific option, not a general do-it-yourself rescue instruction.

If a deer is tangled
Do not approach, chase, or try to restrain an adult deer. Even a deer that can still move may bolt if people or traffic are nearby, creating further danger. If an adult deer is stuck and cannot move, contact the wildlife authority for your area. In British Columbia, the BC SPCA directs readers to the Conservation Officer Service. The appropriate response route differs by jurisdiction.

The BC SPCA notes that material caught only in a deer’s antlers may come off when it sheds its velvet; material that restricts movement or tightens around the neck may require help. Don’t pursue a mobile deer to remove tangled material.
If a bat is involved
Never touch a bat with bare hands. Keep people and pets away and contact a local wildlife professional for instructions. If someone was bitten or may have had contact with the bat, do not release it. Contain it only if that can be done safely, then promptly contact the state or local health department and follow its instructions about exposure assessment, testing, and care.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s bat guidance and American Humane Society wildlife guidance are U.S.-oriented. The Fish & Wildlife Service cautions that release decisions depend on weather and conditions, so don’t decide to release a bat after a possible human exposure without professional direction.
When a professional advises containing a small animal
Containment is only appropriate when a professional recommends it and you can do it safely. BC SPCA guidance for small wild animals describes placing the animal in a sturdy, ventilated box with a towel, then keeping it somewhere quiet and dark, away from pets, while arranging prompt transport to a rehabilitator or veterinarian.

- Never travel with an uncontained wild animal.
- Don’t offer food or water unless a rehabilitator specifically tells you to.

- Check each section of fake webbing and loose netting for wildlife before pulling it down or packing it away.
- Don’t leave loose wire, netting, or low-hanging strings accessible in the yard.
- Keep fake spiderwebs and fake snow indoors. The BC SPCA recommends avoiding these outdoors and checking yards for items that could tangle wildlife.
There is no published statistic in the cited guidance that quantifies wildlife entanglements specifically caused by Halloween decorations. The practical response is to prevent hazards where possible and seek local professional advice when an animal is caught.
