“Maple” refers to many trees in the genus Acer, not one species. To identify one, look beyond leaf shape to its twigs, buds, branching and paired winged seeds. Maples also differ in size, site needs, wood and sap, so the right species depends on what you want from the tree.

What is a maple tree?

Maples belong to the genus Acer. The familiar broad, lobed leaf is common but not universal: boxelder is a maple with compound leaves, while some non-maples have leaves that resemble a maple’s. Species also vary in mature size, growth habit, fall color, climate tolerance and practical uses.

Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) is one well-known species, valued as a shade and ornamental tree and as a source of sap for syrup. Its qualities should not be assumed to apply to every maple.

How to identify a maple

Use several features together, especially if you need a confident identification. Leaves can be absent seasonally, and leaf shape alone can lead to mistakes.

  • Paired samaras: Maples produce paired winged fruits, often called “helicopters.” Check that the two winged seeds are attached as a pair; lookalikes may arrange their seeds differently.
  • Twigs and buds: Their arrangement, shape and details can help distinguish species, particularly when the tree has no leaves.
  • Branching and overall form: Compare the tree’s branching pattern and crown with a regional identification key rather than relying on one photograph.

Utah State University Extension cautions that London planetree can have maple-like leaves and that boxelder is a maple without the familiar palmate leaf shape: Utah State University Extension’s maple guide. For a definitive identification, consult a tree key for your region or ask a local extension or forestry service; species and common lookalikes vary by location.

What are maples used for?

Maple uses depend on the species and the desired outcome. Some are planted for shade or ornamental qualities; some provide wood for particular applications; and certain species are tapped for sap. Sugar maple is widely planted as an ornamental or shade tree. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service notes that its selected cultivars vary in growth habit and crown shape, mature height, fall color, leaf shape and temperature tolerance in its circa-2006 Sugar Maple Plant Guide.

For a planting decision, compare the species’ local climate and site suitability, mature size, shade or ornamental goals, and care requirements. For wood, match the species and its properties to the intended use. A general label such as “maple” is not enough to make a reliable planting or material choice.

Can you tap a maple for syrup?

Possibly, but a maple leaf or a backyard location alone does not establish that a tree is suitable or that it will produce a particular amount. Species, tree condition, weather and collection setup affect the result. Sugar maple is a primary sap source for syrup; the Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports its sap contains around 2% sugar, though the publication date is not shown in the source result: Michigan DNR’s sugar maple profile.

Turning sap into syrup requires concentrating a large volume of liquid. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service gives an approximate figure of 35–40 liters of sap to make 1 liter of syrup — USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, circa 2006. That is a source estimate, not a guaranteed ratio for every tree or season.

What you need to get started

First confirm the tree’s species and suitability using local guidance. Home tapping also requires appropriate collection and processing equipment; a tapping kit with spiles and collection buckets is one way to gather the basic items. University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s syrup-making guide, revised in 2025, explains the process: University of Maine Extension: Maple Syrup Production for the Beginner. The University of Wisconsin Extension also offers beginner equipment guidance: Beginner supplies for maple sugaring.

How to choose among maple species

Start with the job you want the tree to do, then compare candidate species against the conditions where it will grow. A species suited to syrup production is not automatically the best choice for a small yard, a particular climate or a wood project.
