In June 2021, LEGO unveiled a prototype using recycled PET from discarded bottles, but the company later abandoned that approach after concluding it would not reduce carbon emissions. It was a materials experiment, not a retail product or a reported bulldozer-tested brick.
What LEGO actually announced in 2021
On June 23, 2021, LEGO described a prototype brick made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) sourced from discarded bottles. The material included strengthening additives; LEGO said its patent-pending formulation was intended to make PET durable enough for bricks. The company reported that the prototype met several quality, safety and play requirements, including clutch power—the grip that lets bricks connect.
That announcement did not establish a 90% recycled-plastic content figure for the brick, nor did it report a bulldozer test, maximum load or other result supporting the “bulldozer-resistant” description. LEGO’s statement about strength and durability concerned development goals, not a claim of surviving heavy construction equipment.
The prototype’s PET came from suppliers in the United States using processes LEGO said were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority. This describes the reported material-sourcing context; it does not mean the prototype was a retail product separately certified for consumers. LEGO’s June 2021 announcement gives the original details.

How extensive was the materials work?
LEGO said a team of more than 150 people had tested over 250 PET material variations and hundreds of other plastic formulations over the preceding three years. Those figures describe the broader search for sustainable materials, not the number of finished bricks or a specific stress test.
The company also estimated that one 1-litre PET bottle could provide enough raw material for ten standard 2 × 4 bricks. That is LEGO’s material-yield estimate, not a measure of recycled content per brick or an independent production result.

Why the rPET brick did not become a product
On September 27, 2023, LEGO said it would not progress with the rPET brick after two years of testing. The company’s stated reason was that the approach ultimately would not help reduce carbon emissions. Its 2021 prototype announcement had described continued testing before any decision about pilot production; the later decision means the prototype should not be presented as a current or forthcoming retail LEGO product.
LEGO’s explanation was: “When we announced a prototype, we were optimistic about its potential, but after two years of testing, decided not to progress as ultimately it wouldn’t have helped us reduce carbon emissions.” The company’s 2023 update records that decision.

What LEGO says about materials now
LEGO says it aims to increase recycled and renewable materials in bricks and elements by 2032. Its current materials page reports that 52% of materials bought to make bricks and elements in 2025 came from recycled and renewable sources, largely through mass balance. This is a sourcing attribution across purchased materials; it does not mean each individual brick physically contains 52% recycled or renewable feedstock.
Mass balance allows qualifying recycled or renewable material to be attributed across a supply chain even when it is mixed with conventional material. For that reason, a company-wide purchasing figure and the physical composition of a particular brick are different measures. LEGO’s page also says it has tested more than 600 recycled and renewable materials as part of its ongoing search.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why changing a LEGO brick’s material is demanding
A material must do more than produce a brick that looks right. LEGO says its system is designed so bricks made today fit those made 60 years ago. Any replacement material therefore has to preserve consistent connections as well as safety, quality and durability over long-term use. A promising prototype can meet some performance requirements yet still fail to offer the environmental benefit needed to justify moving toward production.

LEGO’s commitments page describes the compatibility goal and product standards. These constraints help explain why recycled-content percentages alone do not show whether a material pathway is suitable: physical content, sourcing accounting, product performance and emissions impact are separate considerations.
