Cold-Bend Hardwood: What It Is, Where It Works, and What It Costs

Cold-Bend™ is Pure Timber LLC’s proprietary compressed solid hardwood, supplied moist so it can be bent at room temperature and dried in a form. It is intended for curved wood components where a continuous solid-wood shape is valuable; it is not a structural rating or a guarantee that every species, dimension, or curve will work. Seller listings checked on October 4, 2026, showed plank examples from $180 to $355, while custom handrail listings ranged from $70 to $105 per linear foot depending on radius.

The key to using it successfully is preserving moisture, following the supplier’s guidance for the particular stock, and testing the actual piece. Do not steam or heat it before bending: Pure Timber says that can undo the compression effect.

What cold-bend hardwood is

Pure Timber describes Cold-Bend™ as solid hardwood selected and moisture-prepared, then compressed along its length. The manufacturer says its process uses no chemical treatment or adhesive. During manufacture, boards are steamed under pressure and compressed to roughly 75–85% of their original length while other dimensions are maintained. Those process details are reported by the manufacturer, not independent comparative test results.

While the stock remains moist, the compressed wood can be bent at room temperature. After shaping, it is dried while supported so the curve sets. It remains solid wood; it is not bendable plywood, kerf-cut trim, or a built-up laminate.

Cold-Bend™ is a branded, proprietary product, not a generic name for every cold-bending technique. Pure Timber says its process does not work with kiln-dried lumber, imported lumber, or softwoods. It lists ash, elm, red oak, white oak, walnut, cherry, and maple among commonly available species; availability and suitability are product-specific.

Where it works

The material may suit furniture, architectural fabrication, boat restoration, sculpture, turning, and musical-instrument components. The strongest fit is a project that needs a tight, continuous, or compound curve in solid wood and where that appearance justifies a specialty material and careful handling.

Potential building and renovation applications include curved furniture or built-in components, architectural millwork, and restoration work. Whether it is appropriate for a particular rail, stair, or other assembly depends on its design, fastening, applicable code, and manufacturer information. Do not treat bendability as evidence that a piece is approved for structural use.

For broad, simple curves, conventional solid-wood bending or a bent laminate may also be viable. Compare the specific radius, stock, equipment and labor needs, risk of breakage, and finished-part requirements rather than assuming Cold-Bend is always the better option.

How it compares with other ways to make a curve

Approach Basic method Consider when Important limitation
Cold-Bend™ Proprietary compressed hardwood is bent while moist at room temperature, then dried supported. A project needs a solid-wood curve and the specific stock fits the design. Specialty stock, moisture handling, and radius limits; confirm guidance with the supplier.
Conventional steam or green-wood bending Suitable wood is plasticized and bent using a conventional process. The radius, species, shop setup, and labor make conventional bending practical. Requires suitable stock and process control; breakage and other losses can occur.
Bent lamination Thin strips are glued and formed into a curve. A built-up part and its visible construction suit the design. Requires glue-up and form work; the result is not a single solid board.

The Forest Products Laboratory’s overview of wood bending discusses stock selection, plasticizing, fixing and drying, and possible strength effects. The right method depends on the actual material and part; no method guarantees success for every shape.

Radius and stock limits

Pure Timber gives approximate bend ratios of about 1:5 for many coarse-grained woods and 1:6 for fine-grained woods. Its FAQ also summarizes a general range of approximately four to six times the stock thickness. These are starting guidelines, not guaranteed minimum radii.

Species, grain, stock quality, thickness, width, and part geometry affect the result. The manufacturer cautions that stock can fail when pushed beyond its limits. Check the current guidance for the exact material and test the actual stock before committing to a finished part.

Handling and forming cold-bend stock

  1. Confirm the design. Establish the required curve, dimensions, species, finish, and the part’s role in the assembly. For code-controlled or load-related work, obtain appropriate design and product information.
  2. Check with the supplier. Confirm stock availability, the recommended radius for the specific piece, storage instructions, and current order details before specifying or ordering.
  3. Preserve moisture. Keep unused stock wrapped in plastic after resawing, as the manufacturer advises. Flexibility decreases as the material dries.
  4. Prepare the form and support. Have the form, clamps, and adequate support ready before exposing the stock. Shape it at room temperature; do not steam or heat it before bending.
  5. Bend and dry while supported. Hold the part on a form through drying. For precision work, follow the manufacturer’s drying guidance; it suggests checking progress with a moisture meter on scrap.
  6. Test and verify. Use a sample or scrap to learn how the actual stock behaves. Check final fit and finish before repeating the process for multiple pieces.

Pure Timber says its stock arrives at approximately 20–25% moisture content and gives approximately 1% shrinkage as an expectation for dried parts. These are manufacturer-reported figures; actual movement depends on the material, restraint, and drying conditions.

What cold-bend hardwood costs

Official seller listings checked on October 4, 2026, showed examples from $180 to $355 per plank. These are dated listings, not a fixed price schedule or a universal price range. Dimensions, species, available stock, custom production, shipping, and current inventory affect the order total.

Seller listing example Listed price
White oak, 43 inches long × 3 inches wide × 1.25 inches thick $180
Maple, 56 inches long × 6 inches wide × 1.25 inches thick $290
White oak, 56 inches long × 6 inches wide × 1.25 inches thick $310
White oak, 84 inches long × 3.75 inches wide × 1.575 inches thick $355
Custom handrail listing, radius 24 inches or larger $70 per linear foot
Custom handrail listing, 6-inch radius $105 per linear foot

Those handrail prices are seller examples, not an installed-project estimate. Ask for a current quote for the required species, dimensions, radius, quantity, and delivery location. Budget separately for any forming, drying, machining, finishing, hardware, or installation the project requires.

Pure Timber says processing yield contributes to the material’s price and compares its price point with premium woods such as koa. That comparison is the seller’s characterization.

Code, fastening, and project planning

A bendable wood blank does not establish code compliance or structural capacity. For handrails, guards, stairs, or other regulated assemblies, check the applicable requirements and obtain design guidance for the complete assembly, including profile, support, connections, and installation. The research does not establish a universal code dimension or structural rating for Cold-Bend stock.
