Termites in a detached firewood log do not automatically mean your home is infested. Leave suspect wood outdoors, do not spray it with insecticide, and check whether there are signs of termite activity on the house itself. Insects or mud-like tunnels in the wood can help you decide whether to seek a local identification or a professional inspection.
How to spot termites in firewood
Termite workers found in firewood are typically whitish and can look ant-like. A log may have mud tunnels on its surface, or tunnels may become visible when you split it. Those signs are worth checking, but appearance alone may not settle what insect you have.
Firewood can also contain other insects. Carpenter ants are larger and dark; they nest in damp, rotting wood rather than eating the wood. Other firewood insects may emerge as a log warms indoors. For help distinguishing them, see the University of Illinois Extension’s guide to firewood insects. If you are unsure, photograph the insect and the suspected tunnels and ask your local Cooperative Extension office to identify them.
What to do with a suspect log or pile
- Leave the wood outside. Do not carry suspect logs into the house or garage. Bring in only the amount you expect to burn promptly.
- Do not apply insecticide. Pesticide-treated firewood can release harmful fumes when burned. Purdue Extension and UF/IFAS advise against treating pest-infested firewood with pesticides. Follow local rules if disposing of or burning infested wood outdoors.
- If insects are already indoors, collect them. Illinois Extension advises placing insects that emerge from firewood outdoors. Many common firewood insects are a nuisance rather than a threat to household wood; that reassurance does not establish that every insect or every situation is harmless.
- Check the building separately. A termite found in detached firewood alone does not establish that the home needs treatment. If you find termite signs on the foundation, house, or structural wood, contact a qualified termite professional or local Extension office for identification and next steps.
Purdue Extension says termites accidentally brought in with firewood will not infest structural wood, while noting that a nearby pile may be a reason to inspect the home. Treat that as general extension guidance, not a guarantee for every property or circumstance. Read Purdue Extension’s guidance on insects in firewood.

When signs point to the house
Look for evidence on the building, not just in the firewood. Mud shelter tubes on a foundation or exposed structural wood, or soil packed into cracks, are reasons to contact a pest control operator for an inspection, according to University of Maryland Extension. The EPA also recommends periodic inspection and professional help for termite control.
If termites or shelter tubes are on the structure, ask a qualified professional to assess the site. Termite species and location can affect management, so an inspection and identification should guide any treatment decision; do not choose a pesticide or treatment based only on a bug found in a log. See the National Pesticide Information Center’s termite guidance and the EPA’s termite identification and control advice.

How to store firewood to reduce pest problems
- Keep the stack off soil and away from the house and other buildings. Illinois Extension recommends at least three feet from structures; other guidance uses “several feet,” so treat these as practical distance recommendations rather than a universal exact clearance.
- Allow air to circulate and keep the wood as dry as practical. A raised firewood rack is one way to keep a stack off the ground, but it does not guarantee a pest-free pile.
- Inspect logs before carrying them indoors, and bring in only a small amount to burn soon. Avoid storing firewood next to the house.
