Poplar can be worth burning, but it is usually better for getting a fire started than for delivering long-lasting heat. Yellow poplar is relatively light, so a stacked cord contains less heat than the same volume of denser oak or hickory. Burn it only when it is properly dry; wet wood makes more smoke and encourages creosote buildup.
What “poplar” means for firewood
Firewood sellers and readers may use “poplar” for different trees, including yellow poplar (tulip tree) and cottonwood. Their heat figures are not interchangeable. For example, University of Illinois Extension lists 16.1 million BTU per cord for cottonwood; that is a cottonwood figure, not a universal value for poplar or a figure for yellow poplar (University of Illinois Extension; year not specified on the page).
Ask which species you are getting if heat output matters. A cord is a measure of stacked volume—128 cubic feet, including the air spaces between pieces—not a fixed weight of wood. Density therefore affects how much heat a cord delivers (Utah State University Extension).
How much heat does poplar provide?
Yellow poplar is less dense than oak and hickory, so a given stacked volume generally provides less heat. WVU Extension specifically notes that lighter yellow poplar has lower heat output by volume than those denser woods (WVU Extension). That makes poplar a less suitable choice if your main goal is to get the most heat from limited stove space or a limited amount of stored wood.

The comparison is about heat per volume, not a fundamental difference in the energy contained in equal weights of dry wood. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach gives a reference value of approximately 7,000 BTU per pound for firewood at 20% moisture or air-seasoned for at least one year; the page does not specify a publication year (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach). Because a cord of lighter wood weighs less than a cord of denser wood, species still matters when comparing heat by stacked volume.
When poplar is useful
Lower density can be an advantage when starting a fire. Kentucky Extension recommends yellow poplar for people who have trouble getting a fire started (University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension). It can be useful as kindling or as part of the initial load, followed by denser, dry wood when you want more sustained heat.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
The sources do not establish a reliable poplar-specific burn duration or coal-forming score. If you need a fire to carry overnight, choose wood known for forming lasting coals rather than assuming poplar will do so; coal formation is one reason some woods are preferred in stoves (Utah State University Extension).
Seasoning and checking poplar firewood
Dryness can matter as much as species to a useful, clean burn. WVU Extension recommends splitting wood soon after cutting because split pieces dry faster than roundwood. Its general firewood guidance gives a readiness target below 20% moisture and says drying can take from six months to more than a year, depending on weather, species and storage. That is general guidance, not a guaranteed timetable for poplar (WVU Extension).

- Split early. Expose more surface area so moisture can escape.
- Stack for airflow. Keep the pile raised on pallets or another platform and leave space for air to circulate around it.
- Keep rain off the top. Cover the top during wet periods, but leave the sides open rather than wrapping or sealing the pile.
- Check the moisture. Sight alone can be unreliable. For a more dependable check, split a piece and press a firewood moisture meter’s prongs into the newly exposed surface. Test several logs from different parts of the pile; aim for below 20% (UNH Extension).
Kentucky Extension says a year is ideal in its general seasoning guidance and that six months is better than only three, but actual drying time depends on weather and species. Treat these as general guidance, not a fixed poplar deadline (University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension).
Smoke, creosote and chimney safety
Green wood can contain up to 80% water by weight, according to WVU Extension. Evaporating that water can use up to 15% of the wood’s potential heat. Burning wet wood also produces more smoke and contributes to creosote buildup, which increases chimney-fire risk (WVU Extension; University of Illinois Extension).

These are general risks of wet firewood, not a special hazard unique to poplar. Illinois Extension recommends annual chimney inspection and cleaning. Keep up that maintenance regardless of the species you burn.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is poplar worth burning?
Yes, if you have it available and it is dry: it can help establish a fire and serve as kindling or part of a mixed load. If you are choosing wood mainly for heat per stacked cord, yellow poplar’s lower density makes it a weaker choice than oak or hickory. In either case, confirm the species and prioritize dry, well-stored firewood.
