Choose an external-blower range hood as a matched system: select an insert and a remote blower the manufacturer explicitly lists as compatible, then follow the hood’s airflow ratings, duct requirements, and installation instructions. Moving the blower away from the kitchen may reduce motor noise at the hood, but quiet performance also depends on airflow, duct resistance, mounting, and vibration; check local make-up-air requirements before finalizing the design.

Before buying, compare certified airflow and sound ratings at comparable speeds and test conditions, the hood’s capture area and permitted mounting height, the approved blower model, and the duct route. A high advertised maximum CFM does not tell you exactly how much air a completed installation will move.

What Is an External Blower Range Hood?

An external-blower, or remote-blower, hood system places its fan away from the hood. Depending on the product, the blower may be mounted outdoors at a wall or roof termination, or installed inline in the duct. The hood or insert at the cooking surface captures the plume; the compatible blower draws exhaust through the duct and outdoors.

Remote placement may reduce motor sound heard in the kitchen, but it does not make a system silent. Airflow, duct resistance, mounting, and vibration affect sound and performance. Compare sound ratings at the same or comparable operating speed and condition; a maximum-speed rating is not directly comparable to a normal-speed rating.

Do not add a second external or inline fan to an ordinary hood to try to boost performance. Broan-NuTone warns this is generally ineffective and may exceed the hood’s motor-switch rating. Choose a hood system designed for a remote blower.

How to Compare External-Blower Hood Systems

There is no single best configuration for every kitchen. Compare the complete hood, blower, duct, and installation plan rather than choosing by a blower’s maximum CFM alone.

What to compare What to check
Airflow HVI-certified rating where available, including the rating condition; do not treat maximum advertised blower CFM as delivered airflow.
Sound Sound rating at the operating speed you expect to use. HVI explains that 3 sones is half the perceived loudness of 6 sones.
Hood and capture Insert width and capture area, cooking-appliance layout, and the hood manual’s allowed mounting height.
Compatibility The exact remote-blower model listed in the hood or insert manual, including controls and electrical requirements.
Duct and termination Specified duct diameter, route length and bends, duct material, and an outdoor termination location.
Project requirements Local make-up-air rules, permits, access for service, and installation constraints.

The Home Ventilating Institute’s 2008 consumer brochure recommends 250 CFM for a 30-inch wall-mounted hood, 300 CFM for a 36-inch wall-mounted hood, and 150 CFM per linear foot for an island-mounted range. These are HVI consumer recommendations from that brochure, not universal code minimums or substitutes for the appliance and hood manufacturers’ instructions or project-specific design.

Choose a Compatible Hood and Blower

Use the exact blower models identified in the hood or insert manual. As one example, Broan’s RMIP insert instructions identify compatible exterior blower families, including 331H, 332H, 335, and 336, and state that blower assemblies are sold separately. Product compatibility can change, so the current manual for the exact insert takes precedence.

Confirm the pairing before cabinets or ductwork are finalized. The insert, blower, controls, wiring, duct collar, mounting details, and product listing must work together. Do not assume a generic inline fan or an unrelated exterior fan can be connected to any hood.

For a custom wood or metal surround, plan around a listed insert and follow its instructions for clearances, mounting height, and construction. Coordinate the insert opening, blower location, duct route, electrical work, and exterior termination during design, not after cabinetry is installed.

Airflow and Sound: Read the Ratings Carefully

CFM means cubic feet per minute and describes airflow volume. An HVI-certified rating can provide a standardized basis for comparing participating products, but check the test condition and operating speed. The maximum advertised CFM is not necessarily the airflow a finished system will deliver.

Duct length, diameter, bends, and static pressure affect delivered airflow. A restrictive route can also increase sound. HVI recommends choosing a hood with a low sone rating and ensuring that its ductwork is properly sized and installed. Sones are intended to track perceived loudness: according to HVI, doubling the sone value corresponds to doubling perceived loudness. Compare ratings at equivalent speeds and conditions.

Broan’s 2025 catalog says its quietest sound level is achieved when the blower is at least 10 feet from the hood and the duct run incorporates a 90-degree elbow. This is Broan’s product guidance, not a universal acoustic guarantee; follow the selected system’s instructions.

Duct Design and Mounting

Match duct size to the hood and blower instructions. HVI recommends matching the fan’s original duct size and keeping the run short and straight. HVI also recommends metal duct for range hoods, preferring smooth metal to flexible metal because ridges create turbulence and reduce airflow. Broan likewise advises using the specified duct size and a short route with few turns.

Exhaust must terminate outdoors, not in an attic, wall cavity, garage, or crawl space. Plan the route and termination before work begins, including access for installation and future service.

Do not apply a generic mounting-height rule. HVI says member instructions average 20–30 inches but directs consumers to the hood-specific instructions. Broan’s RMIP guide specifies 24–30 inches for that product family. Follow the exact hood manual and the cooking-appliance manufacturer’s instructions for the installation.

Make-Up Air and Local Requirements

A powerful exhaust system removes indoor air, so make-up air and other code requirements must be checked for the specific home, jurisdiction, and selected product. Do not rely on a universal CFM threshold: local code adoption and project details vary.

Check current local requirements alongside the hood and blower instructions before choosing system airflow or accessories. Broan describes make-up-air dampers as compatible accessories for certain systems; that does not make a damper a universal add-on. Confirm whether the selected system supports the accessory and whether local rules require it.

Installation Steps

  1. Identify the cooking appliance and the hood or insert that fits its layout and capture needs.
  2. Read the current hood manual and choose only a blower model it lists as compatible.
  3. Compare certified airflow and sound ratings at relevant, comparable operating conditions.
  4. Plan duct diameter, route, bends, and outdoor termination to match the product instructions.
  5. Confirm local make-up-air, permit, electrical, and other installation requirements.
  6. Coordinate hood, blower, controls, duct, framing, and service access before ordering or closing walls and ceilings.
  7. Have installation follow the product manuals and applicable local requirements; verify operation and exhaust at the outdoor termination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add an external or inline fan to my existing range hood?

Not unless the hood is designed for that remote blower. Broan-NuTone says adding an external or inline fan to a hood with its own power unit is generally ineffective and may exceed the hood’s motor-switch rating. Check the hood manual and use only an approved pairing.

How should I compare airflow and sound ratings?

Look for HVI-certified airflow ratings where available and note the test condition. Compare sound ratings at the same or comparable operating speeds. HVI says 3 sones is half the perceived loudness of 6 sones; do not compare one model’s maximum-speed sound rating with another model’s rating at a different speed without noting the difference.

Can I use any blower with an external-blower hood insert?

No. Use the exact blower models the insert manufacturer lists as compatible. Verify the current manual, controls, wiring, duct size, mounting requirements, and any other stated requirements before purchase.

What duct should I use for a remote-blower range hood?

Follow the hood and blower instructions for duct size and material. HVI recommends metal duct, prefers smooth metal to flexible metal, and advises keeping the route short and straight. The exhaust must terminate outdoors.

How much make-up air does an external-blower hood need?

There is no universal answer in this research. Check the current local code and the selected hood and blower instructions for the specific project before setting airflow or choosing a make-up-air accessory.
