Short answer: IKEA’s newly announced 21-product smart-home range is built to work with Matter, but IKEA’s entire smart-home ecosystem is not natively Matter. Many older TRÅDFRI devices still use Zigbee. IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub can expose those legacy products to Matter platforms as a bridge, without changing their underlying technology.
What IKEA actually launched
On November 6, 2025, IKEA announced 21 new smart-home products centered on lighting, sensors and everyday controls. The rollout is market- and category-dependent, so availability is not identical in every country. Representative US listings include KAJPLATS smart bulbs, TIMMERFLOTTE temperature and humidity sensors, MYGGSPRAY motion sensors, MYGGBETT door and window sensors, ALPSTUGA air-quality sensors, KLIPPBOK water-leak sensors, BILRESA remotes, GRILLPLATS smart plugs and TOFSMYGGA outdoor plugs.
IKEA’s announcement describes this as a new Matter-compatible range, not as a conversion of every smart product it has ever sold.
“Matter-compatible” can describe three different setups
| Product type | Underlying technology | Can appear in a Matter ecosystem? | Is DIRIGERA required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| New IKEA Matter device | Matter, often Matter over Thread | Yes | Not always |
| Older TRÅDFRI device | Zigbee | Yes, through DIRIGERA’s Matter Bridge | Generally, for Matter integration |
| Legacy IKEA-only setup | Zigbee and IKEA Home Smart infrastructure | Through a compatible IKEA hub | Depends on the product and existing hub |
Native Matter devices
A native Matter product communicates using Matter itself. IKEA’s product pages identify MYGGSPRAY and TIMMERFLOTTE as Matter over Thread devices. Matter is the common application standard; Thread is the low-power wireless network carrying the connection.

It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
Other new devices may use a different transport. Check the individual product documentation rather than assuming every IKEA Matter product uses Thread.
Bridged Zigbee devices
Older TRÅDFRI bulbs, remotes and sensors remain Zigbee products. IKEA says DIRIGERA can act as a Matter Bridge, representing those devices to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and other Matter ecosystems. They are therefore Matter-accessible through DIRIGERA, not native Matter devices.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting, replacing a hub or checking which features a platform supports.
Do you need DIRIGERA?
Not necessarily for a new Matter device. IKEA’s Matter guide says you can commission a compatible product through another Matter-supported platform. You still need a Matter controller, and a Thread-based product also needs a Thread Border Router.

- Amazon Alexa: Use a compatible Echo or other Alexa Matter controller.
- Samsung SmartThings: Use compatible SmartThings Matter and Thread hardware.
- Home Assistant: Supply and manage the required Matter and Thread components yourself; this is more hands-on than IKEA’s guided setup.
IKEA lists Apple Home, Google, Amazon, Homey and Samsung among compatible systems, but compatibility does not guarantee identical controls. A platform may expose a light, plug or sensor while omitting an IKEA-specific scene, routine or device setting.
What DIRIGERA adds
DIRIGERA remains useful even in a Matter household. IKEA says it connects new and older products, works as a Matter controller, provides Thread Border Router functionality, enables the IKEA Home Smart app and simplifies setup.
It is particularly valuable if you have TRÅDFRI equipment, want IKEA-specific groups and scenes, or prefer one IKEA-managed system. IKEA announced the Matter Bridge capability in September 2024; the bridge makes Zigbee devices visible to Matter platforms but does not alter their radio or native certification.
What you need before buying a Thread sensor
- A Matter controller in your chosen ecosystem.
- A Thread Border Router for products such as MYGGSPRAY and TIMMERFLOTTE.
- A stable local network and current controller, app and device firmware.
- Batteries for battery-powered products. IKEA lists batteries as sold separately for both MYGGSPRAY and TIMMERFLOTTE, recommending two LADDA AAA rechargeable batteries.
A phone alone is not normally the complete Thread network. Placement also matters: battery-powered Thread devices depend on the quality and coverage of the mesh.

How to set up a new IKEA Matter product
- Put the device into pairing mode according to its IKEA instructions.
- Open Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Homey or another Matter-compatible app.
- Scan the unique Matter QR code on the packaging or documentation.
- If scanning fails, enter the 11-digit numeric Matter setup code.
- Assign the device to a room, then create the desired automation or scene.
For IKEA-specific routines, groups and management of older products, add the device through DIRIGERA and the IKEA Home Smart app instead.
If pairing fails
- Confirm that your platform supports the device category, not merely Matter in general.
- Check that the controller is online and running current software.
- For Thread products, verify that a Thread Border Router is present and nearby enough for reliable coverage.
- Move the device closer to the controller or Thread mesh during commissioning.
- Make sure the product is genuinely in pairing mode.
- Use the numeric code instead of the QR scan.
- Update DIRIGERA and the IKEA Home Smart app if you are using the hub.
- Reset the product only by following its IKEA manual.
A failed direct pairing does not by itself prove that the product is not Matter-compatible; controller support, Thread coverage, firmware and commissioning can all be responsible.

Which approach fits your home?
Choose individual IKEA Matter devices
This is the simplest value proposition if you want an inexpensive bulb, plug or sensor and already own a suitable Matter controller and, where needed, Thread Border Router. You avoid buying a hub solely for one or two devices.
Choose DIRIGERA
Buy the hub if you own older TRÅDFRI products, want the IKEA Home Smart app and IKEA-specific scenes, or want IKEA to supply the Matter-management and Thread-border-router layer.
Use another Matter controller without DIRIGERA
This works well when your household already runs on Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or another capable platform and you do not need legacy IKEA support. Verify device-category support and Thread hardware first.
What the “entirely Matter-compatible” claim gets wrong
- It conflates the 21-product launch with IKEA’s full historical catalog.
- It treats Matter as hub-free, although a controller is still required and Thread products need Thread infrastructure.
- It implies identical features across every platform.
- It overlooks batteries, controller hardware and Thread coverage in the real setup cost.
- It suggests DIRIGERA is obsolete, even though it remains the practical path for legacy Zigbee products and IKEA-specific features.
Verdict
IKEA’s new 21-device range is designed for Matter, and many of its sensors use Matter over Thread. The accurate broader statement is narrower: the new collection is Matter-compatible; IKEA’s complete smart-home ecosystem is not natively Matter. Existing Zigbee products can still join Matter ecosystems through DIRIGERA, while buyers with a suitable controller and Thread network can often use new devices without purchasing the hub.
