Regional moves differed, and October increases were still attempts and forecasts—not confirmed prices paid by buyers—as of the report’s October 5, 2026 publication.
What changed in September—and what did not?
After broadly stable pricing through much of Q2FY27, producers attempted increases late in September. The Financial Express, citing analyst estimates, put the pan-India average retail price at about ₹359 per bag, ₹6–7 higher than in August. Yet the average for the quarter was still estimated to be 1–1.5% below Q1FY27, so the monthly rise should not be read as a stronger quarter overall. The Financial Express report published October 5, 2026 describes monsoon disruption and uneven demand as constraints on gains.
A separate ANI report carried by The Economic Times put the September all-India average trade price at ₹356 per bag, up ₹7 month on month. That is a distinct trade-price figure; the reports do not establish a common methodology or reconcile it with the Financial Express retail estimate. The Economic Times report, carrying ANI, was published September 29, 2026.

These estimates show why a national average can obscure local differences: the largest reported regional average rise was in the South, while some eastern states and Gujarat were reported flat. Figures and regional details are from the Financial Express’s October 5 account.
Why were producers seeking higher prices?
The Financial Express attributed pressure on cement makers’ margins to elevated fuel costs and weak operating leverage. JM Financial analysts estimated that industry profitability would decline by ₹250–300 per tonne quarter on quarter in Q2FY27E, primarily for those reasons. This is an analyst estimate quoted by the newspaper, not an audited industry result.

- The report cited analyst estimates that diesel prices were up about 9% year on year and 5% quarter on quarter, international coal prices were up 39% year on year, and international petcoke prices were up 34%.
- Elara Capital analysts separately estimated international petcoke prices had risen 19% over the prior month. They expected variable costs to remain inflationary in Q3FY27, citing limited relief from lower-priced domestic coal.

No. As of the Financial Express report’s October 5 publication, companies had announced increases of ₹10–20 per bag across most markets, and analysts expected increases of ₹5–15 in the first week of October. Those were announcements and expectations, not evidence that the full amounts had been realized or sustained in transactions. Whether buyers accepted the increases remained uncertain.

August reporting illustrates the distinction between an attempted hike and one that sticks. The Financial Express said average prices were about ₹330 per bag in August, unchanged from July. It also reported that dealers expected only ₹15–20 of a proposed ₹30 increase in Chennai from September 1 to sustain; about ₹10 of proposed ₹20 increases in Hyderabad and Patna; and a ₹10 increase in Mumbai. Those August figures are earlier context, not September prices. The August context appeared in the Financial Express on September 8, 2026.

What should buyers and builders take from the reports?
- Use local quotes for a purchase decision. The national and regional figures are estimates, not a live quote for a particular city, brand or dealer.
- Separate the month from the quarter. September’s reported rise followed broadly flat pricing, while the Q2 average was still estimated below Q1.
- Distinguish announced increases from realized prices. An announced per-bag hike may be partly absorbed or fail to hold; the reports do not establish the final October price level.
- Keep price series distinct. The Financial Express’s estimated retail average and ANI/The Economic Times’ average trade price are separately labeled and should not be merged into one definitive national number.
