If Your Fridge Dies, Should You Put Frogs in Your Milk?

Don’t put frogs in milk. Keep the fridge closed, use the 40°F threshold, and move perishables to a properly iced cooler if needed.

No. Frogs are not a safe or validated way to preserve milk. If the power goes out, keep the refrigerator door shut and use time and temperature—not an amphibian—to decide what to keep.

How long does milk stay safe when the refrigerator loses power?

FoodSafety.gov says an unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for up to four hours during a power outage if the door stays closed. This is an estimate, not a guarantee for every appliance or room temperature. Opening the door lets cold air escape, so leave it shut while the outage continues.

For refrigerated milk, the food-specific rule is to discard it if it has been at 40°F (4°C) or above for more than two hours. Use a thermometer to check the milk’s temperature when possible; elapsed outage time alone may not tell you how warm a particular item became.

What if the milk was frozen?

Frozen milk that still has ice crystals and feels as cold as refrigerated food may be refrozen, though its texture can suffer. Discard it if it has been above 40°F (4°C) for more than two hours. Follow the food-specific guidance for other items rather than assuming the milk rule applies to everything.

How to keep food cold during a longer outage

  1. Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed. FoodSafety.gov estimates that a closed, full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours, and a half-full freezer for about 24 hours. These are approximate holding times.
  2. Move perishables to a cooler if the outage may outlast the refrigerator’s cold-holding window. Pack it with ice or frozen gel packs and keep the food at or below 40°F (4°C). An appliance thermometer can help you monitor the temperature.
  3. Check each food against the applicable safety guidance. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe; smell and appearance alone cannot establish safety either.

Do not store food outdoors in snow as a substitute for a cooler: outdoor temperatures fluctuate, and food may be exposed to unsanitary conditions or animals. For U.S. household outage guidance, see FoodSafety.gov’s Food Safety During Power Outage chart, last reviewed August 8, 2024.
