I Used Reolink’s Near-360° Outdoor Camera for Four Months—Here’s Why It Beat My Nest Cam

The Reolink TrackFlex Floodlight WiFi is a strong Nest upgrade for homeowners who want near-360° outdoor coverage, bright lighting, and local 24/7 recording without a required subscription.

The Reolink TrackFlex Floodlight WiFi is a major upgrade over a fixed Nest outdoor camera if you need broad, actively tracked coverage, bright outdoor lighting, and continuous local recording without a required subscription. After more than four months of use, its dual-lens design, motorized tracking, local-storage options, and floodlight made it a much more capable security camera for a driveway, gate, porch, or walkway.

There is one important correction to Reolink’s “360-degree” marketing: the camera pans 355 degrees and tilts 50 degrees. That is near-360-degree PTZ coverage—not a permanent, simultaneous view in every direction.

What I used: the Reolink TrackFlex Floodlight WiFi

The Reolink TrackFlex Floodlight WiFi is a hardwired outdoor camera built around four systems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A fixed 4K wide-angle camera for the overall scene.
  • A separate telephoto camera for closer views.
  • A motorized pan-and-tilt base that can follow detected activity.
  • Adjustable floodlights, infrared night vision, two-way audio, and a siren.

Three PIR sensors help detect movement outside the direction currently shown by the lens. When the camera detects activity, it can turn toward it and use its telephoto lens to provide a closer view.

#1 Best Overall
REOLINK Argus PT Ultra First 4K Solar Security Cameras Wireless Outdoor | 360° Pan Tilt Auto-Tracking, 8MP Color Night Vision, 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi 6, No Subscriptions, Home Hub Compatible
  • 4K 8MP Color Vision Day & Night: The battery security camera is upgraded to 4K 8MP ultra-high definition, providing unparalled visual experience for you. The built-in motion spotlight helps you see every important color detail even at night.
  • 100% Wire-Free Easy Setup: The camera works on 2.4/5GHz WiFi and continuously powered by the new 3W solar panel, freeing you from frequent battery charging hassles. With this easy-to-install wireless camera, you can build up your independent security system within minutes.
  • 360° Coverage & Remote Access: Sweep off blind spots with 355° pan & 140° tilt. With the free Reolink app/client, you can remotely view and control the camera anytime anywhere and talk with your family or delivery person on the camera.
  • Smart Detection Reduces False Alarms: Equipped with an advanced sensor and intelligent algorithms, this battery camera brings more accurate alerts, and you can set the detection sensitivity and zones for person/vehicle/pet motion to further reduce unwanted alerts.
  • Multiple Alerts & Recording Options: The spotlight and siren will be triggered by motion to deter intruders, meanwhile you'll receive email or push notifications in real time. You can record events to the microSD card (purchased separately) and quickly play back with smart filters.

That combination is what made it feel like a substantial upgrade from my fixed Nest Cam Outdoor. The advantage was not just sharper video. The TrackFlex could cover more approaches from one mounting point, illuminate a larger area, and record continuously to local storage without requiring a monthly cloud plan.

Is the TrackFlex really a 360-degree camera?

Not literally. Reolink lists a maximum 355-degree pan and 50-degree tilt. The camera can turn around almost its entire mounting point, but it cannot complete a full 360-degree rotation.

More importantly, a PTZ camera does not record every direction at the same time. It records the direction its lenses are facing. If someone approaches the driveway while another person moves near the side gate, the camera may have to choose which event to follow. The wide-angle view, continuous recording, PIR detection, or another camera can help, but the TrackFlex is not a replacement for multiple permanently aimed cameras when simultaneous coverage matters.

So “near-360-degree coverage” is the accurate way to understand it: one camera can patrol most of the area around its mounting point, rather than providing a simultaneous panoramic video feed.

Why the dual-lens design matters

The main wide-angle lens records at 3840×2160, or 8MP, at up to 20 frames per second. Its field of view is 104 degrees horizontally and 60 degrees vertically.

The second lens is a 1920×1080, or 2MP, telephoto camera with up to 6× hybrid zoom. It has a narrower 38-degree horizontal and 21-degree vertical field of view. In practice, the wide lens establishes what is happening, while the telephoto lens helps inspect a person, vehicle, or other subject more closely.

That 6× figure should not be confused with a high-resolution optical-zoom security camera. The telephoto sensor is only 2MP, and detail falls away as the subject gets farther from the camera—especially after dark. Zoom is useful for bringing a subject closer on screen, but it cannot create identification detail that was never captured.

The two views are most useful when they work together: the wide-angle image keeps the property context visible while the telephoto view follows activity. For a driveway or side entrance, that is more informative than digitally cropping a single fixed image.

How well did tracking work?

In the reported four-month experience, the TrackFlex’s tracking was better than that of other Reolink cameras the reviewer had previously used. That is useful firsthand evidence, but it is not a controlled benchmark against every outdoor PTZ camera.

REOLINK 4K Solar Security Cameras Wireless Outdoor, 4G LTE Cellular Camera
  • Stunning 4K Imaging: The 4K solar-powered cellular camera delivers exceptional detail in every shot. Experience true color and clarity—even in pitch darkness.
  • 4G LTE & Truly Wireless: Powered by continuous solar energy and connected via 4G LTE, it operates anywhere with cellular coverage. No wiring, no Wi-Fi, no hassle. Ideal for remote cabins, job sites, and outdoor installations.
  • Flexible Cellular Connectivity: The included Reolink SIM card works nationwide on AT&T and T-Mobile networks, automatically switching to the strongest signal. Easily manage activation, refills, and usage through the intuitive Reolink app.
  • See Everything with Precision Control: The 355° horizontal and 140° vertical range ensures no blind spots. Adjust pan/tilt speed and save up to 32 preset positions to focus on what matters most.
  • Smart Detection & Customize Zones: Intelligently distinguish between people, vehicles, and animals with advanced AI analysis. Customize motion detection zones for targeted surveillance and receive instant, accurate alerts when activity is detected.

Tracking is most valuable when a person, vehicle, or animal enters from outside the current view. The PIR sensors can detect movement in a claimed 270-degree out-of-view area, prompting the camera to turn toward the event. The camera supports auto-tracking, one guard position, and up to 64 preset positions.

There are practical limits:

  • The camera can begin moving only after detection, so the first part of an approach may be captured by the wide-angle view before the PTZ view arrives.
  • A subject can pass through a blind spot while the camera is repositioning.
  • Two people moving in opposite directions can divide the camera’s attention.
  • Fast vehicles and poor light can introduce motion blur.
  • After following a subject, the camera may need to return to its guard position before it can respond to another direction.

The PIR system is therefore an excellent way to make a single camera more responsive, but it is not equivalent to a 270-degree detailed video feed. PIR reliability can also be affected by the mounting position, heat sources, foliage, rain, snow, insects, and sensitivity settings.

Night vision and the 3,000-lumen floodlight

The TrackFlex combines infrared night vision rated up to 30 meters, or 100 feet, with floodlights adjustable up to 3,000 lumens. The light’s color temperature can be adjusted from 3,000K to 6,500K.

When the floodlights are active, the camera can provide color night footage. That is helpful when you need to distinguish clothing, vehicle color, or activity around a driveway. The light is also a deterrent and can make the camera useful as an outdoor security fixture rather than merely a recording device.

But this is floodlight-assisted color night vision. It is different from a camera designed to produce color footage from very low levels of ambient light without turning on a bright light. If you want quiet, unobtrusive nighttime monitoring, the TrackFlex’s infrared mode or a less intrusive model may be a better fit.

A 3,000-lumen light may also be excessive for a small lot, a porch close to neighbors, or a camera aimed toward bedroom windows. Walls, windows, rain, and snow can create reflections, and the light may illuminate the immediate foreground more strongly than the far edge of the scene.

The biggest advantage: local recording without a required subscription

The TrackFlex can record continuously, on a schedule, or only when motion is detected. Storage options include:

  • microSD cards up to 512GB
  • Reolink NVRs
  • Reolink Home Hub and Home Hub Pro systems
  • FTP and NAS storage

This is a fundamentally different ownership model from the current Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen). Nest’s free service includes only six hours of 10-second event previews. Longer event history, searchable footage, and continuous history require Google Home Premium.

Google lists Home Premium Standard at $10 per month or $100 per year, with up to 30 days of event history. The Advanced plan is listed at $20 per month or $200 per year, with up to 60 days of event history and up to 10 days of 24/7 history.

  • 4K 8MP Color Vision Day & Night: The outdoor security camera is upgraded to 4K 8MP ultra-high definition, providing unparalled visual experience for you. The built-in motion spotlight helps you see every important color detail even at night.
  • Auto-Tracking & 360° Coverage: 355° Pan and 140° Tilt rotation allows for monitoring with no blind spots. Intelligent auto-tracking is supported. The Reolink camera follows moving objects in real time.
  • 100% Wireless Installation + Detachable Solar Panel: No wiring needed. Easy, flexible setup with a detachable 3W solar panel. Just 20 minutes of sunlight charging per day can power the camera every day.
  • Smart Detection with Instant Alerts: Equipped with advanced motion sensors and intelligent algorithms, the camera accurately detects people, vehicles, and animals. Customize detection zones and stay informed with spotlight, siren, and phone notifications.
  • Flexible Storage Options: Save footage locally to a microSD card (up to 512GB), Reolink Home Hub, or FTP server—no subscription fees. Build your own wireless Reolink security camera system with Home Hub.

“No monthly fee” does not mean the TrackFlex has no ownership costs. You may still need a microSD card, NVR, Home Hub, NAS, replacement storage, an electrician, or weatherproof electrical hardware. Local recording also makes the owner responsible for firmware updates, account security, storage management, backups, and protecting the recording device.

A microSD card inside the camera is not an off-site backup. If the camera is stolen or destroyed, footage stored on that card may disappear with it. A network recorder or NAS in a secured indoor location is a stronger option for important recordings.

Reolink TrackFlex versus Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen)

Category Reolink TrackFlex Floodlight WiFi Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen)
Coverage 355° pan, 50° tilt, and active tracking Fixed 152° diagonal view
Main video 4K/8MP wide-angle video, up to 20fps 2K HDR
Close-up view Separate 2MP telephoto lens with 6× hybrid zoom Digital zoom and crop
Recording microSD, NVR, Home Hub, FTP/NAS, including 24/7 modes Cloud-centered Google Home history
Subscription Not required for local recording Six hours of short previews free; extended history requires Google Home Premium
Lighting Floodlights up to 3,000 lumens Night vision and low-light color features
Power Hardwired AC Wired outdoor power
Smart-home support Alexa and Google Assistant Strongest fit for Google Home households
Best fit Broad outdoor coverage with local storage Simple cloud-managed monitoring in the Google ecosystem

Nest remains the better choice for someone who already uses Google Home and values a polished, cloud-managed interface more than local recording. It is also the simpler consumer product for buyers who want a fixed view and do not need a floodlight or PTZ mechanism.

The TrackFlex is the stronger choice when the camera must watch several approaches, record continuously without a required plan, and provide bright active lighting. Neither product is categorically better for every property.

Installation is the main catch

The TrackFlex is not a normal USB-powered camera. Reolink specifies 100–240V AC input at 50–60Hz. Its USB-C/5V 2A connection is for setup, not normal permanent operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power the camera for initial setup.
  2. Add it in the Reolink app by scanning the QR code.
  3. Create the camera name and administrator password.
  4. Insert and initialize the microSD card if you are using one.
  5. Turn off the circuit breaker before permanent wiring.
  6. Mount the bracket and camera.
  7. Connect the wiring, restore power, and complete configuration.
  8. Set detection zones, sensitivity, floodlight behavior, tracking, presets, and recording rules.

Outdoor mains-voltage work should not be treated like plugging in a webcam. Reolink’s quick-start material notes that regional wire-color specifications can vary. If you are replacing a fixture, extending outdoor wiring, or unsure whether the existing box and weather protection are suitable, use a qualified electrician.

Placement matters as much as wiring. Mount the camera where Wi-Fi is strong, the lenses have a clear view, the floodlight will not shine into nearby windows, and the PTZ movement will not be blocked by walls, eaves, or landscaping.

Connectivity and smart-home compatibility

The camera supports dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi 6, with Bluetooth-assisted setup. Reolink lists RTSP, RTMP, ONVIF, FTP, and NAS-related support, along with Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility. Apps are available for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

The reviewer reported successfully integrating the camera’s RTSP stream with an existing network video recorder. That does not guarantee compatibility with every NVR. Check whether your recorder supports the exact stream, codec, resolution, and frame rate before buying.

  • Flexible Storage Options: Save footage locally to a microSD card (up to 512GB), Reolink Home Hub, or FTP server—no subscription fees. Manage your Reolink cameras with Reolink Home Hub to build a wireless security camera system.

Continuous 4K recording also places more demand on Wi-Fi than occasional motion clips. Test signal strength at the final mounting location—not just inside the house. Local recording can continue to be useful during an internet outage, but remote access may still depend on network configuration or Reolink’s remote-access service.

Reolink’s current product information lists Alexa and Google Assistant, but not Apple HomeKit. Home Assistant setups should be treated as version-specific integrations rather than a guaranteed official feature.

What local AI search can—and cannot—do

Local storage and advertised AI video-search functions are available without a required subscription. That can make finding a person, vehicle, or event much faster than scrubbing through hours of footage.

AI search should still be treated as an aid, not evidence that every event will be found perfectly. False matches, missed matches, clothing descriptions, lighting changes, long recordings, and multiple moving subjects can all affect results. Important footage should be verified in the original recording.

Which camera should you buy?

Buy the TrackFlex if:

  • You need one mounting point to cover a driveway, side gate, porch, or walkway in different directions.
  • You want 24/7 local recording without a required monthly plan.
  • You have suitable hardwired AC power or budget for professional installation.
  • A bright motion-triggered floodlight is useful.
  • You are comfortable managing local storage, alerts, and network access.
  • Alexa or Google Assistant support is enough for your smart-home setup.

Choose another camera if:

  • You need multiple directions recorded simultaneously and continuously.
  • Your network is designed around PoE.
  • You do not have suitable AC wiring.
  • Apple HomeKit is essential.
  • You want a small, unobtrusive camera.
  • You want color night footage without activating a bright floodlight.
  • You prefer a polished cloud service with minimal storage management.

Reolink alternatives worth considering

Reolink Elite Floodlight WiFi

The Elite Floodlight WiFi is a fixed 180-degree panoramic alternative. It does not have the TrackFlex’s moving PTZ coverage, but its fixed design avoids a moving mechanism and includes Reolink’s listed Perimeter Protection features, such as line-crossing, zone-intrusion, and loitering alerts. Choose it when a stable view and perimeter rules matter more than active tracking.

Reolink TrackMix WiFi

The TrackMix WiFi offers PTZ tracking without the TrackFlex’s large floodlight. It is the better fit if tracking matters but powerful area lighting does not.

Reolink E1 Outdoor CX

The E1 Outdoor CX is aimed at buyers who want color night footage from ambient light rather than floodlight-assisted color. It is less suitable when bright security lighting is a central requirement.

Google Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen)

Nest remains sensible for Google Home households that prioritize easy setup, cloud search, and a fixed 2K HDR camera over local recording and near-360-degree PTZ coverage.

My final recommendation

The TrackFlex is a compelling replacement for a fixed outdoor Nest camera when the property has hardwired AC power and needs more than one narrow viewing direction. Its strongest advantages are the system design: near-360-degree PTZ coverage, out-of-view PIR detection, a second telephoto lens, a powerful floodlight, and local 24/7 recording without a mandatory subscription.

It is not a literal 360-degree panoramic camera, not a simultaneous multi-angle surveillance system, and not a zero-cost ownership proposition. But for a homeowner who wants broad driveway or perimeter coverage without paying for cloud history every month, it is a genuinely substantial upgrade.
