The original Google Home, Google Home Mini (1st gen), and Google Home Max are set up through the Google Home mobile app. You need a Google Account, home Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a compatible Android or Apple device. As of September 2026, Google’s published requirements are Android 9 or later, or iOS/iPadOS 17 or later. A computer cannot be used for device setup.
Important: the original Google Home Mini is not the same product as the second-generation Nest Mini. Their factory-reset procedures are different.

Before you begin
- Google Home, Google Home Mini (1st gen), or Google Home Max with a suitable power adapter
- A Google Account
- A working home Wi-Fi network and its case-sensitive password
- The latest Google Home app
- An Android phone or tablet running Android 9 or later, or an iPhone or iPad running iOS/iPadOS 17 or later
- Bluetooth enabled on the setup phone
Connect your phone to the Wi-Fi network that the speaker will use. Keep the phone close to the speaker and place the speaker roughly 15–20 feet from the router during setup. Public, school, business, dormitory, apartment-complex, and captive-portal networks may prevent setup. WPA2 home Wi-Fi is the safer starting point; WPA2 Enterprise networks are not supported in Google’s setup guidance.

Identify your speaker
| Model | How to recognize it |
|---|---|
| Google Home | The original larger cylindrical speaker, with a microphone switch on the back. |
| Google Home Mini (1st gen) | A small fabric-covered puck using a micro-USB power connection. Its reset button is on the underside. |
| Google Home Max | A large rectangular speaker with an AC power connection and a 3.5mm analog audio input. |
| Nest Mini (2nd gen) | The successor to Home Mini. It looks similar, but its reset procedure is different. |
For model details, compare the device with Google’s specifications and identification information.
How to set up any of the three speakers
1. Install and prepare Google Home
Install or update Google Home from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Sign in with the Google Account that should manage the speaker, turn on Bluetooth, and connect the phone to the intended home Wi-Fi.
Google may show an automatic setup card. If it does not, continue with the documented menu path: Home tab → Add → Device.

2. Plug in the speaker
Connect the speaker to a wall outlet and wait for its startup indication. If it was previously owned, assume it may still be associated with another home or Wi-Fi network. A used device often needs a factory reset before normal setup will work.
3. Start device discovery
- Open the Google Home app.
- Open the Home tab.
- Tap Add, then Device.
- Choose to set up a new device if prompted.
- Select an existing home or create one.
App labels can move as Google updates the app, so follow an automatic setup card if one appears.

- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
4. Scan the QR code or enter the setup code
Scan the QR code on the speaker or packaging when prompted. If scanning fails, tap Use setup code and enter the displayed or printed code. If that option is unavailable, choose Add a different way and search for the speaker model. Google documents these alternatives in its current setup instructions.
5. Choose the home, room, and name
Confirm the home and assign the speaker to a room. Use a clear name such as Kitchen speaker or Bedroom Mini, rather than a phrase that could sound like a voice command. Room assignments are especially useful when several speakers are installed.

6. Connect to Wi-Fi
- Select the intended Wi-Fi network.
- Enter the password carefully, including capitalization.
- Keep the phone near the speaker while it connects.
- Wait for Google Home to confirm completion.
If your router broadcasts separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz network names, try either supported band. Google recommends trying both when a dual-band connection is troublesome. The speaker and setup phone should be on the same home network during setup.
7. Complete optional settings
After the connection succeeds, Google may offer Voice Match, Personal results, calling, media services, privacy controls, and other personalization options. These are not required to connect the speaker and can generally be configured later.
Factory-reset instructions by model
A factory reset is not the same as unplugging and reconnecting the speaker. It erases device settings and disconnects the speaker from the home. Google says these speakers cannot be factory-reset by voice or from the Google Home app. Reset only when necessary.

| Model | Reset control | Approximate timing |
|---|---|---|
| Google Home | Rear microphone mute button | About 15 seconds |
| Home Mini (1st gen) | Button underneath, below the power cord | About 5 seconds, then roughly 10 more |
| Home Max | Rear button near the power cord | About 12 seconds |
| Nest Mini (2nd gen) | Top center after switching the microphone off | Different procedure; do not use the Home Mini method |
See Google’s factory-reset instructions for the current confirmation sounds and model procedures.
Original Google Home
Move the rear microphone mute switch or button to the appropriate position, then press and hold the microphone mute button for about 15 seconds. Keep holding until the speaker announces or confirms that it is resetting.
Google Home Mini (1st gen)
Turn the speaker over. Press and hold the circular reset button etched into the base below the power connection. After about five seconds, reset begins; continue holding for roughly 10 more seconds until the speaker confirms the reset.
Google Home Max
Find the factory-reset button on the back near the power cord. Press and hold it for about 12 seconds, then release when the speaker confirms that it is resetting.
Fix common setup problems
The speaker does not appear
- Confirm that the speaker is powered on.
- Unplug it for 10 seconds and reconnect it.
- Force-close and reopen Google Home.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
- Check that the phone is connected to the intended Wi-Fi.
- Move the phone within approximately 5–20 feet of the speaker.
- Move the speaker closer to the router.
- Try setup again.
- Try another phone or tablet in the same home.
- Reset the speaker only if it was previously configured or still cannot be discovered.
This sequence follows Google’s setup troubleshooting guidance and avoids erasing the device unnecessarily.

The Wi-Fi network is missing
Verify that the phone can connect to the network from its current location, that the router is broadcasting its network name, and that the speaker is near the router. If using 5GHz, confirm that the phone supports the band. Captive-portal and enterprise networks may not work. Client isolation or access-control settings can also block local discovery, although the exact cause depends on the router.
The password is rejected or setup freezes
- Re-enter the password manually; it is case-sensitive.
- Reboot the router.
- Reboot the speaker.
- Force-close Google Home.
- Turn the phone’s Wi-Fi off and on.
- Try the other Wi-Fi band.
As a diagnostic test, connect the speaker through a temporary phone hotspot. If setup works there, investigate the home router, Wi-Fi security settings, password, or ISP. A hotspot is not a fully supported permanent connection method. If it fails on the hotspot too, try another setup device and then consider a reset or Google support.
You changed the router or Wi-Fi password
Changing the phone’s Wi-Fi connection does not automatically update the speaker. In Google Home, use the same Google Account, open the speaker’s device tile and settings, and look for the Wi-Fi or device-network option. Follow the prompts to connect it to the new network.
If the speaker cannot be reached or the Wi-Fi option is unavailable, factory-reset it and set it up again. Google’s network-change guidance specifically covers the original Home Mini and Home Max.

Privacy and account choices
Voice Match and Personal results can make responses more personal, but they also allow a shared speaker to recognize voices and provide account-linked information. Consider whether that is appropriate in a shared household.
Media-service integration and calling are optional. The physical microphone mute control on the original Google Home is useful when the speaker should not listen; it provides a direct control rather than relying only on app settings. For a second-hand device, reset it before linking your Google Account. A reset clears device settings and disconnects it from the home, but do not assume it removes every item of information Google may retain in cloud systems.
Is an older speaker still worth using?
Usually, keep setting up an existing Home, Home Mini, or Home Max if it powers on reliably, connects to Wi-Fi, and meets your needs for voice commands, casting, alarms, timers, or music. Being older or no longer sold directly does not by itself make a speaker unusable, but feature availability can differ from newer Nest devices and not every current Assistant or Gemini feature is guaranteed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Replacement makes more sense if the adapter is missing or damaged, the speaker repeatedly loses Wi-Fi, warranty coverage matters, or a used unit costs nearly as much as current hardware. The Nest Mini (2nd gen) is the closest compact replacement for the original Mini; Nest Audio is better suited to fuller room audio; and a Nest Hub Max adds a display and camera rather than simply replacing a speaker. Google’s US store also lists the Google Home Speaker. Prices and availability vary by country and time, so check the official store before buying. Basic setup does not require a Google Home Premium subscription.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set up Google Home without the app?
No. Google’s current process uses the Google Home mobile app; setup is not performed from a computer.
Can I set up a Google Home speaker on public Wi-Fi?
It may fail. Captive-portal, school, business, dormitory, and some shared apartment networks can block setup or local-device discovery.
Can I use a phone hotspot?
Use a hotspot only as a temporary diagnostic test. Success points to a problem with the home router or network; it is not recommended as the speaker’s permanent connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat happens when I factory-reset the speaker?
The reset erases device settings and disconnects the speaker from its Google Home. It cannot be undone, and it does not necessarily erase all cloud-held account information.
