Dreame X40 Ultra

Dreame X40 Ultra Review: It Was Hard to Beat at Launch—But Is It Still Worth Buying in 2026?

The Dreame X40 Ultra is still a superb automated vacuum-and-mop system, especially on hard floors and around edges. But its weak dock suction, large footprint, ongoing costs and 22mm threshold limit mean it is worth buying only at a substantial discount.

The Dreame X40 Ultra remains an exceptionally capable robot vacuum and mop, particularly for edge cleaning, automated mopping and obstacle avoidance. But the launch-era claim that it “doesn’t get any better” is no longer sound buying advice. Dreame’s newer X50 Ultra handles taller thresholds and offers newer hardware, while the X40’s official U.S. listing showed the discounted model as sold out when checked on August 18, 2026.

Buy the X40 Ultra only if you can find legitimate stock at a substantial discount, confirm local warranty and parts support, and do not need the X50’s improved threshold handling.

Quick verdict

  • Best for: homes with hard floors, pets, furniture edges and owners who want highly automated vacuuming and mopping.
  • Standout strengths: extendable edge mopping, a liftable side brush, rotating mop pads, mop washing and drying, automatic water management and sophisticated obstacle avoidance.
  • Important weaknesses: weak dock suction in long-term testing, a large dock, recurring consumable costs, maintenance requirements and a 22mm listed step-clearance limit.
  • 2026 verdict: excellent at the right price, but not automatically the best premium robot vacuum.

The original Guidantech review treated the X40 Ultra as a best-in-class mopping robot. That enthusiasm was understandable at launch: few rivals combined such extensive edge-cleaning hardware with a dock that could empty, wash, dry and refill the robot. However, the X50 Ultra is now Dreame’s newer flagship, and current availability and regional pricing matter more than the X40’s original reputation.

What is the Dreame X40 Ultra?

The X40 Ultra is an all-in-one robot vacuum and mop system. Its multifunction dock automatically empties the robot’s dustbin, manages clean and dirty water, washes the mop pads with hot water, dries them with hot air and dispenses cleaning solution. Through the Dreamehome app, you can schedule runs, select rooms, create no-go zones and apply different vacuuming or mopping strategies to different floors.

#1 Best Overall
DREAME X40 Ultra Robotic Vacuum with Removable & Liftable Mop, 12,000Pa Suction, Side Brush Extensive Cleaning, 158°F Mop & Washboard Self Cleaning, Auto-Empty, Auto Refill, liftable Brushes
  • SideReach for Unreachable Spots: A liftable, extendable side brush tackles wall corners and furniture legs, thoroughly removing dirt. X40 Ultra safeguards rugs from wet-dry mess contamination.
  • Keep Carpets Dry with a Removable & Liftable Mop: X40 Ultra protects carpets from moisture by removing mops or auto-lifting them to 10.5mm(0.41inch). Set zones to avoid rugs, reducing the risk of getting stuck.
  • 12,000Pa of Forceful Sweeping: The industry-leading 12,000Pa* suction eliminates hair, dirt, and debris for a cleaner home. An optimized air duct design ensures efficient airflow, keeping the passageways unobstructed for a smooth cleaning session.
  • Smartly Fight Stubborn Dirt : With the help of OmniDirt detection and MopExtend RoboSwing technologies, X40 Ultra detects tough messes and scrubs them deep under low furniture and corners.
  • Auto Maintenance Keeps You Hands-Free: Simultaneously cleans both the mop and washboard with 158°F hot water to reduce stains and foul odors. Adjust your cleanup with 4 temperature levels in the app. Only support 2.4G WiFi, FOR USA USE ONLY.

The robot uses dual rotating mop pads rather than a simple stationary cloth. It can lift the pads for carpet, or leave them at the dock when mop removal is enabled. Its official specifications include up to 12,000Pa suction, a 300ml robot dustbin, an 80ml onboard water tank, a 6,400mAh battery, approximately 10–10.5mm of mop lift, 22mm of listed step clearance, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, a robot height of about 10.5cm and a width of about 35cm. See the official X40 Ultra specifications for regional details.

Why the X40 Ultra was so impressive

It can reach beyond the robot’s round body

Most round robot vacuums leave a strip of floor along walls and furniture. The X40 Ultra addresses that limitation with an extendable mop pad that moves toward edges and corners. Its extendable side brush can also reach closer to boundaries, while the brush can lift by approximately 10mm to separate dry sweeping from wet cleaning.

These features do not make manual cleaning obsolete, but they address one of the most visible weaknesses of conventional robot designs. For kitchens, dining areas and rooms with lots of furniture, the edge hardware can matter more than a higher headline suction number.

It protects carpets more intelligently

The robot can lift its mop pads by approximately 10.5mm and can use mop removal at the dock. Lifting may be sufficient for low-pile rugs. Thick, absorbent or expensive carpets are better candidates for mop removal, carpet avoidance or clearly configured no-mop zones.

Correct mapping remains essential. A robot can only follow the carpet strategy it has been given, and a raised mop is not a guarantee that every rug will remain dry. Test the setup on a small area before scheduling whole-home mopping.

The dock does nearly everything

Hot-water mop washing, hot-air drying, automatic emptying, water management and cleaning-solution dispensing substantially reduce daily intervention. Dirt detection can also prompt additional mop washing or repeated floor cleaning. That is useful for maintenance cleaning in kitchens and pet homes, although it should not be confused with manually treating an old grease mark or dried stain.

Obstacle avoidance is a major feature

Dreame advertises recognition of more than 120 object types, including shoes and cables, using structured-light sensing and an onboard LED for darker areas. This is a manufacturer capability claim, not a standardized score. Independent testing should be considered separately from the specification. In practical terms, the sensing system is intended to reduce the number of times you must clear the floor before starting a run.

How well does it clean?

Hard floors

Hard floors are the X40 Ultra’s strongest environment. Its suction is more than sufficient for ordinary dust, crumbs and pet hair, while the rotating mop pads provide a more active scrub than basic drag-cloth systems. The extendable mop and side brush are especially valuable around skirting boards, table legs and cabinet edges.

Do not treat 12,000Pa as proof that the X40 cleans better than every competitor. Pa is a manufacturer suction rating, not a standardized cleaning result. Actual outcomes depend on the brush, airflow, floor surface, debris type, route and whether the dock empties the robot properly.

Carpets and rugs

The X40 Ultra can increase suction on carpet and either lift or remove its mop pads. It is a sensible mixed-floor option when rugs are low-pile and thresholds are modest. Performance becomes less predictable with thick rugs, loose mats, fringe, dark surfaces or abrupt transitions. Its listed 22mm step clearance is not a promise that it will cross every 22mm transition: shape, angle and surface grip also matter.

Sticky and dried stains

Rotating pads, dirt detection and hot-water washing make the X40 Ultra effective at regular maintenance mopping. They do not turn it into a floor-restoration machine. Old, oily or heavily dried stains may still need pre-treatment and manual attention.

Pet hair and long hair

The X40 includes anti-tangle features, but “anti-tangle” means reducing tangles, not eliminating maintenance. Long hair can still collect around the main brush, side brush, wheels, mop mounts and magnetic attachments. Dreame’s optional TriCut brush may help, but it is not necessarily included with every regional package. Check the exact listing and compatibility before buying.

The most important weaknesses

Dock suction can be weak

TechRadar’s three-month testing identified weak base-station suction and found debris remaining in the robot’s dustbin. This is a material limitation, especially in homes with heavy pet hair or larger debris. The robot may appear to have self-emptied while still retaining waste.

If emptying becomes unreliable, inspect the robot dustbin, filter, air channel, dock bag, sealing area and dock inlet. Large debris can bridge the opening, and hair or accumulated dust can restrict airflow. Repeated partial emptying should be treated as a support or return issue rather than normal hands-free behavior.

The dock is large

The multifunction dock needs substantially more space than a basic charging station. Measure its width, depth and height clearance, then check that you can open doors, remove both water tanks, replace the dust bag and access the washboard. Leave room for a power outlet and avoid placing it where furniture prevents the robot from docking squarely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ownership is not maintenance-free

You still need to empty or clean tanks, replace bags and filters, inspect brushes, clean the washboard and check the mop system. TechRadar estimated approximately $200 per year for consumables under its test assumptions, including bags, filters, brushes, cleaning solution and mop pads. Actual costs vary considerably by country, home size, cleaning frequency and accessory availability.

Thresholds remain a limitation

The X40’s listed 22mm step clearance is adequate for many ordinary transitions, but not for every raised doorway or split-level floor plan. If the robot must cross tall thresholds routinely, the newer X50 Ultra deserves serious consideration.

Wi-Fi and regional support require checking

The X40 uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. During setup, confirm that your router and the Dreamehome app can provide a compatible 2.4GHz connection. Also check that the exact regional model is supported locally. Before buying from an importer, verify the return period, warranty, repair arrangements, replacement parts and app compatibility.

X40 Ultra versus X50 Ultra

The Dreame X50 Ultra is the more future-facing choice. Its official U.S. page lists 20,000Pa suction, retractable legs, a lowered 3.5-inch navigation mode, newer anti-tangle brush technology and an obstacle capability of 2.36 inches. The page showed a price of $999.99 against a $1,599.99 reference price when checked on August 18, 2026.

The X50 is particularly compelling for homes with high thresholds, complex transitions or buyers who want Dreame’s current flagship hardware. It is unnecessary overbuy for a small, mostly hard-floor home with low thresholds if the X40 is genuinely much cheaper.

On the same date, Dreame’s U.S. X40 page showed $539.99 against a $1,199.99 reference price, but the Black variant was marked sold out. Prices and availability change, so compare the actual delivered price, stock status, warranty and included accessories rather than relying on an old list price.

X40 Ultra versus L40 Ultra

The Dreame L40 Ultra is the more relevant value alternative within Dreame’s range. Its official page lists 11,000Pa suction, MopExtend RoboSwing and a 10mm liftable side brush. It offers a similar edge-cleaning philosophy but is not an identical substitute for the X40 Ultra.

Choose the L40 when you want automated mopping and edge access without paying for every X40 feature. Choose the X40 when its mop handling, sensing, dock features and discount justify the difference. Choose neither if your home needs the X50’s threshold capability.

How it compares with Roborock and Eufy

Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra: consider it if independently tested vacuum performance, carpet pickup, the Roborock app or ecosystem matters more than maximum edge-mopping reach. RTINGS’ comparison found the S8 MaxV Ultra delivered better overall debris pickup than the Dreame L40 Ultra across a wider range of surfaces, while both handled hazards similarly well. That is useful context, but it is not a direct X40 Ultra test and should not be treated as a definitive X40 defeat. See RTINGS’ comparison.

  • Healthier Home for Your Pets: Maintain clean pet zones with less manual effort, fostering a healthier, happier, and safer environment for your pets.

Eufy Omni S1 Pro: consider it for predominantly sealed hard floors if a roller-based mopping design is your priority. It follows a different cleaning approach and may be less attractive for carpet-heavy homes or buyers specifically seeking the X40’s rotating pads, mop removal and edge-extension features. There is no universal winner without a controlled, direct comparison.

Older discounted models: a Dreame L10s Ultra or similar previous-generation model may be better value if your main requirements are self-emptying and automated mopping. It will generally offer fewer features and lower headline specifications, but may cost substantially less.

Ownership checklist

Plan to inspect the main brush weekly in homes with pets or long hair. Clean side-brush axles and wheel wells, keep filters clear, wash the dock’s washboard and drainage areas, empty dirty water promptly and keep mop drying enabled. Use only compatible cleaning solution at the recommended dilution.

If a carpet becomes damp, verify its map classification, enable carpet avoidance or mop removal, create a no-mop zone and test a small area. If the dock leaves debris behind, clean the robot dustbin, filter, emptying channel and dock inlet, check the bag seal and run another emptying cycle. If pairing fails, use a 2.4GHz network, temporarily disable band steering if required and confirm the regional app and model match.

Who should buy the Dreame X40 Ultra?

Buy it if you find authorized stock at a clear discount, have mostly hard floors or low-pile rugs, value edge mopping and automated dock functions, can accommodate the large dock and have locally available bags, pads, filters and cleaning solution.

Choose another model if your thresholds exceed roughly 22mm, your home is carpet-heavy, the X40 costs nearly as much as the X50, you require immediate availability, you dislike recurring consumables or you expect a completely maintenance-free appliance.

Dreame’s official X40 page displayed a three-year warranty signal, but warranty length, exclusions and eligibility are regional. Confirm the written terms with the seller before purchase.
