You can wash a yellowed pillow only if its care label and filling allow it. Check those first: many synthetic, down, or feather pillows can be machine washed, while foam and specialty fills may need spot cleaning or other product-specific care. Cleaning may improve yellowing, but it cannot guarantee that every pillow will return to white.
Before washing, check the pillow and its care label
Remove the pillowcase and any removable cover. Inspect the pillow for tears, then identify its filling and read the care label. Similar-looking pillows can have different washing and drying rules.
If the label is missing or unclear, look up the exact product on its maker’s website; Electrolux recommends checking the manufacturer’s site when a tag has faded. Do not assume a pillow is machine washable because another pillow of the same apparent material is.
How to wash a pillow that is labeled machine washable
- Follow the label’s wash settings. Use the listed temperature and cycle. For general machine-washable synthetic, down, or feather pillows, Whirlpool suggests washing two at a time when possible to balance the load, using a gentle cycle and the warmest temperature allowed by the tag. An extra rinse can help remove detergent. These are general suggestions, not universal settings.
- Use detergent cautiously. Whirlpool recommends a gentle approach; for polyester pillows, Electrolux suggests a small amount of mild detergent and an extra rinse. Too much detergent can be difficult to rinse out.
- Dry according to the pillow’s label. Whirlpool’s general guidance is low heat for synthetic fill and no-heat air fluff for down or feather, but a product’s own tag takes priority. Make sure the pillow is completely dry before using it; moisture left inside can encourage mildew.

How to treat yellow stains on polyester
For a polyester pillow whose label permits washing, Electrolux India recommends pretreating the stain, washing gently with mild detergent, and adding an extra rinse. Its guidance also describes oxygen bleach as an option for yellow stains on polyester. This is manufacturer advice from India, not a guarantee of whitening or permission to override the pillow’s label; follow the directions on both the pillow and the stain-removal product.
Do not apply bleach indiscriminately. Clorox’s advice distinguishes polyester from down, and some pillow makers prohibit bleach for their products. For example, Down Etc says not to use bleach on its pillows. Check the exact pillow instructions before using any bleaching product. Care depends on the filling
Synthetic and polyester
Some synthetic pillows are machine washable, but care varies by product. Follow the tag for the wash cycle, temperature, and dryer settings. Electrolux’s stain guidance applies specifically to polyester pillows; do not assume it covers every synthetic fill or removable cover.
Down and feather
Wash these only when the maker’s instructions allow it. Down Etc recommends a gentle cold or warm wash with mild detergent for its products and says not to use bleach. Clorox also advises against regular chlorine bleach on down-filled pillows. Those instructions are not interchangeable with the care rules for every down pillow.

Memory foam and other foam
“Memory foam pillow” can mean a removable cover over a solid core or a pillow with shredded fill. The care method differs, so check the exact product instructions. Whirlpool says memory foam may need hand washing; Down Etc says its solid memory foam should not be machine washed or dried. Sleep Number distinguishes washable covers from spot-clean foam inserts. For a non-washable foam core, follow the maker’s spot-clean directions and avoid saturating it unless that product’s instructions explicitly allow it.
Buckwheat
Down Etc says buckwheat hulls must not get wet and should not be machine washed. Remove the hulls before washing an outer cover, if that cover’s label allows washing.

A washable pillow protector can act as a buffer against moisture and dirt. Electrolux describes this as a way to reduce soil reaching the pillow, and Sleep Number recommends a protector between cleanings. Wash the protector according to its own care label; it can help reduce staining but does not guarantee that the pillow will stay free of discoloration.
