To spruce up a light switch, decorate or replace its wall plate—not the switch mechanism. Cover a detached plate with leftover wallpaper, decorative paper or fabric; decoupage it for a custom accent; or fit a compatible paintable or decorative replacement. Keep the work to the cover plate, and stop if you find exposed wiring, damage or anything that requires changing the switch.
Choose a finish that suits the room

For a subtle result, use matching wallpaper and align its pattern across the plate and wall. For contrast, choose a distinct paper or motif. These projects use the plate as a décor surface; they do not call for modifying the switch.
Cover a detached plate with paper, fabric or wallpaper
Gather a detached wall plate, suitable paper or fabric, scissors, double-sided adhesive or another appropriate adhesive, and a craft knife. A rigid metal plate with straight edges is a practical base for wrapping because its flat edges are easier to fold neatly. [Kyle Switch Plates tutorial]
- Work on the plate only. The decorative technique is for a detached cover plate, not the switch body or wiring. Follow the applicable product instructions and local safety guidance for handling the plate.
- Plan the layout. Place the plate over the material and position it so the visible area shows the pattern or motif you want. For wallpaper, align the scrap with the wall pattern before cutting. [Fine Homebuilding]
- Cut and wrap. Trim the material with enough excess to fold around the plate’s edges and onto its back. Secure it with adhesive, keeping it flat and smooth.
- Open the cut-outs. Carefully cut openings for the switch and plate screws so they remain clear. A craft knife is useful for precise trimming; take care not to cut beyond the edges.
- Check the finish and fit. Make sure the material is secure, openings are unobstructed and the plate sits properly. Do not force a plate that does not fit.
Make a decoupage plate
Decoupage works well when you want a collage, a small photo or a decorative paper motif rather than a wall-to-wall match. The cited tutorial uses decorative paper, wallpaper or photos with varnish, a brush, scissors and a craft knife. [Kyle Switch Plates]

- Start with the detached plate and arrange the paper pieces on it before applying anything.
- Apply and finish the material according to the varnish and adhesive product instructions.
- Trim the switch and screw openings carefully, then let the finish cure as directed before putting the plate back in service.
Rounded plate edges are more difficult to cover smoothly than flatter profiles, so a simple motif and a straight-sided plate are easier choices for a first project.
Use a paintable or decorative replacement plate
If wrapping an existing cover sounds fiddly, choose a purpose-made plate designed to be painted or wallpapered. Hubbell/TayMac describes MASQUE plates as paintable or wallpaperable, as well as offering decorative cover-up designs. Before choosing any replacement, compare its opening with the switch type and count the gangs—the number of devices accommodated by the plate. A single-gang plate will not suit a multi-gang installation, and toggle and decorator openings are not interchangeable. Follow the plate manufacturer’s instructions for finishing and installation.

Electrical precautions depend on the task, product and jurisdiction. OSHA’s 2015 interpretation concerns construction employees working around receptacles during painting: under the standard it discusses, a receptacle cover’s removal requires the receptacle to be de-energized for work in the area. That workplace interpretation is not a complete homeowner electrical code, but it is not a reason to paint around exposed energized parts. [OSHA, 2015]

Manufacturer instructions also vary by product. Leviton’s Decora Smart faceplate instructions say power may remain on when the device is installed with no wires exposed, but direct users to turn off power at the breaker if wires are exposed and the device is connected to power.
