To start a hydroponic garden, choose a compact crop such as lettuce or herbs, select a system that suits your space and maintenance tolerance, and provide a complete hydroponic fertilizer, adequate light, and oxygenated roots where the system requires it. Begin with a small setup, monitor water level and pH, and clean equipment between crops.

What you need to know before starting

Hydroponics grows plants without soil by delivering nutrients through water. Plants still need water, nutrients, light, carbon dioxide, and oxygen; the system’s job is to make those available to the roots while supporting the plant. A beginner setup can be a simple passive container or a powered system with a pump or aerator. The right choice depends on what you want to grow, the available footprint, equipment, and how much routine attention you can give it. UNH Cooperative Extension

1. Choose a first crop and a place to grow it

Lettuce and herbs such as cilantro and parsley are practical first crops for a small indoor garden. Kale and spinach are other leafy options. These plants are compact compared with fruiting crops. Tomatoes and cucumbers can grow hydroponically, but generally need more space, support, and time. Illinois Extension and UGA Cooperative Extension

Measure the area before choosing a kit or building a system. Consider plant height, room to access the reservoir, and whether the location has enough even light. Indoor plants often need a grow light; choose lighting for the crop and growing conditions rather than relying on a universal wattage rule. UNH’s home fact sheet suggests 14–18 hours of light per day, which is its guidance, not a one-size-fits-all schedule. UNH Cooperative Extension

2. Pick a hydroponic system

There is no single best system for every beginner. Passive designs avoid powered water delivery, while active designs rely on equipment such as a pump, timer, or aerator. Compare the crop, footprint, power needs, components included, monitoring and cleaning effort, and how easily you can replant and harvest.

System How it works What to plan for
Wick (passive) A wick draws nutrient solution from a reservoir into the growing medium. No electric pump is needed; suited to simple, small setups. Illinois Extension
Deep-water culture or floating raft Plant roots sit in nutrient solution. Provide aeration with an air pump and air stone; oxygenation is important for stationary systems. UNH Cooperative Extension and Illinois Extension
Ebb and flow A pump periodically floods a tray, then solution drains back to the reservoir. Requires more equipment than a passive setup, including a pump and typically a timer. Illinois Extension
Nutrient film technique (NFT) A continuous flow of nutrient solution passes through a channel alongside suspended roots. Routine care includes checking pump operation and solution flow. Illinois Extension

Home systems range from recirculating troughs to a five-gallon bucket with growing medium and fertilizer applied by hand. Ready-made kits and DIY builds are both options; kit contents vary, so check whether the design includes a reservoir, pots, medium, pump, aeration, or light. UNH Cooperative Extension

3. Gather supplies and prepare the area

Depending on your design, you may need a reservoir or container, net pots or another plant support, growing medium, hydroponic fertilizer, and seed-starting supplies. Active systems may also require a water pump, timer, or an air pump and air stone. Indoor setups may need a grow light. Common media include coconut coir, perlite, vermiculite, rockwool, and expanded clay pellets. Choose a medium compatible with your system that supports roots while allowing access to water and oxygen. Some systems use net pots; others do not. Illinois Extension

Use water appropriate for the crop and check local extension advice if you are unsure about your source water. UNH says drinkable municipal or well water is generally suitable for home hydroponics. Minnesota Extension cautions that softened water can carry excess salts, hard water may contain elevated calcium and magnesium, and its guidance does not recommend rainwater for leafy greens. 4. Start seeds and transplant seedlings

You can start seeds in the hydroponic system or in a separate tray and move them once they are ready. Use a starter plug suited to your setup and keep seedlings in appropriate warm, humid conditions. UNH Cooperative Extension

5. Mix nutrients and monitor the reservoir

Use a fertilizer made for hydroponics

Choose a complete fertilizer formulated for hydroponic growing and appropriate to your crop. Follow its label for mixing and use; do not improvise a nutrient recipe. One-part products can be simpler for beginners, while two-part products separate calcium from other nutrients and require more careful mixing. Never combine concentrated calcium with incompatible concentrated components; follow the product directions. UNH Cooperative Extension and Illinois Extension

Check water level and pH

Plants use water, so check the reservoir and keep roots from drying out. Replenish with properly mixed nutrient solution rather than repeatedly topping up with plain water. How often to replace the solution depends on system size, crop, and growing conditions: UNH says timing is difficult to predict, while UGA suggests a 3–4 week water-change interval in its small-scale guidance. Treat that interval as setup-specific guidance, not a universal schedule. UNH Cooperative Extension and UGA Cooperative Extension

Test pH after mixing fertilizer, because pH affects nutrient availability. Published home-growing ranges differ: Illinois Extension says most plants prefer 5.5–6.5, UNH gives 5.5–7.0, and Minnesota Extension gives a broad 5.4–7 range. Crop, fertilizer, and source water influence management, so use crop-appropriate extension guidance rather than treating one number as universal. Adjust cautiously: UGA warns that a small amount of pH adjuster can cause a large change. Illinois Extension, UNH Cooperative Extension, Minnesota Extension, and UGA Cooperative Extension

6. Maintain light, oxygen, and cleanliness

Give plants adequate, reasonably even light. Weak, stretched growth can be a sign that plants are not receiving enough. In deep-water or raft systems, keep the required aeration running so roots receive oxygen. Block light from reaching the nutrient solution where possible; light, moisture, and fertilizer can encourage algae growth. Clean components between crop cycles. UNH Cooperative Extension and Illinois Extension

If growth is poor, inspect the roots and confirm that aeration is working in systems that need it. Brown, mushy roots may indicate root rot. UNH advises emptying, cleaning, disinfecting, and restarting a system infected with root-rot disease. Wash hands before harvesting and do not let nutrient solution contact edible crop portions. UNH Cooperative Extension

What to expect from water use

UNH Cooperative Extension reports that home hydroponics can use 90% less water. That figure is from its fact sheet, whose publication date is not displayed; it should not be assumed to apply to every crop or system. UNH Cooperative Extension
