To assemble a typical table-lamp base, secure its threaded pipe through the base, route the cord through the pipe, add strain relief, and connect the cord to the socket’s correctly marked terminals. Work only with the lamp unplugged, and follow the instructions for the actual lamp and socket: parts and wiring vary, and some manufacturers prohibit replacing electrical components.
Before assembling the base
Unplug the lamp before opening it. Remove the shade, bulb, and harp to reach the socket assembly. Inspect how the existing cord runs and how the base is constructed; a felt bottom may need to come off to access the pipe and cord. Keep it if it is suitable to reattach.
First check the lamp’s instructions for restrictions on wiring or replacement parts. For example, the manual for model 20640-000 prohibits non-factory wiring and electrical components. That is a requirement for that model, not a universal rule for all lamps.
Identify compatible parts
Do not assume that a generic rewiring kit will fit. Check the base opening, pipe or rod thread, cord route, socket type, switch arrangement, and manufacturer’s instructions before buying parts. Depending on the design, the pieces may include lamp cord, a socket and insulator, threaded lamp pipe, washers, a locknut, and a harp.

Trade sizes can be confusing. National Artcraft describes “1/8 IP” as a trade designation and gives 3/8-inch outer diameter and 27 threads per inch for its example lamp pipe. Its example harp top is 1/4-27. These are examples, not measurements established for your lamp; measure the actual parts and opening.
Assemble the base and socket
- Fit and secure the pipe. Pass the threaded pipe or rod through the base and secure it with the appropriate washers and locknut. A common assembly sequence then adds the neck or vase cap, harp base, and socket bottom. Follow the parts’ instructions, and do not overtighten components that are meant to be finger-tight.
- Route the cord. Feed the cord through the pipe before connecting it to the socket. Make the strain-relief knot specified by the socket or lamp instructions; it helps prevent a pull on the cord from tugging the conductors loose at the terminals.
- Prepare the conductors. Strip only the amount of insulation required by the socket instructions, taking care not to nick the conductor. National Artcraft’s guide says 3/4 inch when stripping is necessary, but the instructions for your socket or cord take precedence.
- Connect the socket. In the standard polarized lamp cord described by National Artcraft and Electrical101, ribbed insulation identifies neutral and smooth insulation identifies hot. Connect neutral to the silver terminal and hot to the brass terminal. Check the cord markings and socket instructions rather than relying on appearance if they differ.
- Close and inspect. Make sure the strands are captured under the terminal screws, then restore the socket insulator and cover. Reassemble the lamp and inspect the cord, fittings, and socket before use.
When to stop
The sequence above describes a common cord-through-pipe construction; it is not a safety certification for a particular lamp. The referenced guides do not cover every vintage design, grounded lamp, multi-socket arrangement, or unusual switch. If you find damaged insulation, unfamiliar wiring, a different grounding arrangement, or a switch you cannot identify, stop and consult the lamp manufacturer or a qualified professional. A continuity check with a tester, as described by Electrical101, can check continuity but does not rule out every fault or unsafe condition.

Use only a bulb within the rating stated for your lamp. The manual for model 20640-000, for example, specifies indoor use and a maximum 150-watt three-way Type A bulb or CFL/LED equivalent; those limits apply to that model and should not be applied to other lamps.
