First check the model number on your Rival machine: Rival made bucket-style makers that use ice and rock salt, freezer-canister models, and a separate soft-serve and frozen-drink machine. Their preparation and operating steps differ. The main procedure below is for the FRRVBK02 2-quart bucket model; use your model’s manual for its fill limit, freezing time, and accessories. Rival’s manual catalog lists multiple designs.
Use the FRRVBK02 bucket model
The Rival FRRVBK02 has a canister that rotates inside a bucket of ice and rock salt. Its owner’s manual, © 2012, gives the following procedure. Do not apply it to Rival machines with a freezer canister.
- Wash the parts before first use. Follow the manual’s cleaning directions for the parts, keeping the scoop motor out of water.
- Fill the canister. With the canister outside the bucket, pour in prepared ice-cream mixture. Do not fill it more than three-quarters full; the mixture expands as it freezes.
- Assemble the canister. Center the paddle, fit the cover over it, and set the covered canister in the bucket.
- Fit the motor. Seat the motor assembly over the paddle, then align and turn the bucket key locks to secure it.
- Start the machine. Plug in the cord. This model starts automatically and rotates the canister; the paddle itself does not turn.
- Add ice and rock salt as it runs. Put about two inches of ice around the bottom of the bucket, then sprinkle about one-quarter cup of rock salt over it. Continue layering ice and salt until the ice reaches the top of the rotating canister. The manual specifies rock salt for this model.
- Check for the texture you want. Rival says to churn approximately 30–40 minutes or until the desired consistency is reached. The motor does not stop automatically when the ice cream is ready. Unplug before removing the motor and cover to check it.
- Remove the ice cream safely. Unplug before taking off the motor. Clear ice and salt away from the cover before removing it. Serve the ice cream soft, or harden it in the canister or another covered container.
How the other Rival models differ
Identify your exact model before preparing a batch. These Rival models do not use the FRRVBK02 bucket-and-salt procedure.

Handle jams, overheating, and cleanup
If the FRRVBK02 canister jams
Unplug the machine before intervening. The FRRVBK02 manual says to try manually twisting the canister; if it remains jammed, its procedure describes adding water to the bucket. Keep hands and utensils away from moving parts while the machine is running, and do not operate it empty.
If the motor stops from overheating
Unplug the FRRVBK02 and wait at least 20 minutes before restarting, as directed in its manual.

Clean the machine after use
For the FRRVBK02, hand-wash the canister, cover, and paddle, then towel-dry the canister. Clean saltwater residue from the bucket after each use. Do not put these parts in the dishwasher, and never immerse the motor. Unplug before cleaning or disassembling. Cleaning instructions differ on GC and IC500 models, so use their manuals rather than assuming the bucket model’s directions apply.

For the FRRVBK02, the manual describes hardening by repacking the bucket with fresh ice and rock salt for two to three hours, or by putting the covered canister or ice cream in a household freezer for several hours. If using a plastic storage container, leave room for expansion and use a tight-fitting lid. The IC500 manual calls for an airtight container for long-term storage.
