To make curly or quilted maple figure stand out, use a compatible wood dye rather than relying on pigment stain alone: dye colors wood cells and can leave the grain pattern more visible. Prepare the surface, test a matching scrap, apply the dye evenly, and choose a compatible topcoat. Results depend on the wood, dye solvent, application, and finish.
Why dye can reveal figured wood
Pigment stain colors wood partly by leaving particles in small pores and surface openings. Smooth, dense maple offers fewer places for those particles to settle; gel stain may also form a surface film with limited penetration that can obscure grain. Dye dissolves in its solvent, follows where that solvent penetrates, and colors wood cells. WOOD Magazine describes this approach as a way to bring out undulating curly-maple figure that pigment stain may leave looking bland. This is practical woodworking guidance, not a quantified comparison. WOOD Magazine’s guide was updated March 6, 2025.
Some stains combine dye and pigment, but that combination does not necessarily avoid the limitations described for dense figured wood. Choose based on the appearance you want and test on the actual species before committing.
Choose a dye and solvent that suit the project
Dyes are available as powders or liquids and may use water, denatured alcohol, or other solvents. WOOD Magazine recommends water-soluble powdered dye as a starting point, describing it as easy to use and reliable, with good resistance to fading. Follow the instructions for the specific product; solvents and formulations are not interchangeable. The article names W.D. Lockwood & Co. powdered dye as a product it had used, but that does not establish current availability or formulation.

- Wood dye from Keda Dyes can make 5 quarts of liquid dye stain, in 5 exotic wood dye colors per kit.
- Wood Dyes are eco-friendly, offer vibrant wood dye colors, and are very powerful.
Before selecting a dye, consider the wood species, the application method you can use, and the clear finish planned for the project. Water-soluble dye, for example, can be disturbed by brushing on a water-based finish, so confirm compatibility with the manufacturers’ directions.
Prepare and apply water-soluble dye
- Raise the grain. Sand the wood as usual, wipe it with a water-dampened cloth, and let it dry overnight. Sand lightly with 320-grit paper to remove raised fibers.
- Mix one batch for the whole project. Use a glass or plastic container and make enough dye at once to reduce the chance of tone differences between batches. Test the color on scrap from the same wood or closely matching stock.
- Follow the product’s mixing directions. WOOD Magazine gives 1 ounce of powdered dye per quart of water as an example recipe, not a universal specification. Its example calls for boiling the water, cooling it for one minute, adding the dye, then allowing the mixture to cool. If the dye maker’s directions differ, follow those instead.
- Strain the mixture. Mix thoroughly, then filter through a coffee filter or pantyhose to catch undissolved lumps.
- Apply quickly and evenly. Use a foam brush or household sponge to flood the surface before edges dry and create lap marks. Work on the whole project at once where practical, or divide a large piece into manageable sections. Wipe off excess immediately with a soft cloth.
Control darker end grain and adjust the color
End grain can absorb more dye than face or edge grain, making it appear darker. WOOD Magazine suggests either sanding end grain more finely than the rest of the piece or sealing it before dyeing. Its sealing method is premixed shellac thinned 50/50 with denatured alcohol; after it dries, sand lightly with 220-grit paper. Test either approach on scrap first, since it changes how the wood takes color.

- If the color is too dark: The article says a moist cloth can lighten dye, especially while it is still wet. It also describes diluting with water and removing remaining dye with household chlorine bleach for an extreme mismatch. Bleach can have consequential effects on wood and later finishing, so test on scrap before using it on a project.
- If the color is too light: Apply another coat or use a stronger batch, testing first to avoid overshooting the desired shade.
- If the tone needs warming or cooling: A different dye color can be layered, but confirm the result on matching scrap.
Protect the color with a compatible finish
Dried dye can look dull; a clear topcoat can restore the richer, wet-looking appearance and add sheen. WOOD Magazine warns that brushing a water-based finish over water-soluble dye may redissolve and pull the color into the finish, muddying the result. The article recommends spraying to avoid that problem. Check the chosen dye and finish makers’ compatibility and application instructions rather than assuming every product behaves the same way.
Using alcohol-soluble dye
For alcohol-soluble dye, WOOD Magazine says to mix with denatured alcohol, not rubbing or isopropyl alcohol, and never to heat the flammable solvent. Because alcohol evaporates quickly, the article recommends spraying to reduce streaking. For pine, it attributes to finisher Steve Mickley the suggestion of mixing alcohol-soluble dye with shellac and spraying the mixture as a toner, so it forms a film instead of soaking into the wood.
