For mold on hard shower surfaces, scrub with detergent and water, then dry the area completely. To prevent it returning, fix leaks or other moisture problems and improve bathroom ventilation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not recommend bleach as routine mold cleanup: removing the growth and controlling moisture matter more than simply killing it.
How to remove mold from hard shower surfaces
- Address the moisture first. Look for leaks or other water problems and fix them promptly. If the surface or nearby items are wet, dry them completely. EPA calls moisture control “the key to mold control.” See the agency’s basic mold cleanup steps and guidance on getting rid of mold.
- Scrub hard surfaces with detergent and water. Work the visible mold off tile and other hard surfaces, then dry the cleaned area thoroughly. Household detergent is sufficient for this method; EPA’s guidance does not require a specialty mold-killing product.
- Do not cover mold with paint or caulk. Clean the affected surface and let it dry before painting or recaulking. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel, according to EPA’s guide to mold, moisture and the home.
What changes for grout, caulk and porous materials?
Tile and other hard surfaces can generally be scrubbed, but materials do not all respond the same way. Mold can get into porous materials and be difficult or impossible to remove completely; moldy porous material may need to be discarded. If growth is within or behind material, repeated surface scrubbing may not resolve it. EPA discusses these limits in its home mold guide and cleanup guidance.
How to keep shower mold from coming back
- Keep moisture from accumulating. Repair leaks and other water problems rather than treating only the visible mold.
- Increase ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan or open a window when possible. If mold returns, EPA specifically advises increasing ventilation and cleaning more frequently.
- Dry the area. After cleaning, dry surfaces and items completely. For broader indoor humidity, EPA recommends keeping relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent if possible. This is general indoor guidance, not a shower-specific target; see EPA Mold Course Chapter 2.
Should you use bleach on shower mold?
EPA does not recommend bleach or other biocides as routine mold cleanup. It is usually neither possible nor necessary to sterilize an area; once the moisture problem is resolved, background spores will not grow. Dead mold still needs to be physically removed because it may cause allergic reactions. As EPA puts it, “Dead mold may still cause allergic reactions in some people, so it is not enough to simply kill it, it must also be removed.” Read EPA’s bleach and mold guidance.
If you choose to use a disinfectant or biocide, ventilate and exhaust air outdoors. Never mix chlorine bleach with other cleaning solutions or ammonia-containing detergents; toxic fumes can result. Follow the product label rather than relying on a universal dilution.

When to get professional or health advice
Consider an experienced professional if mold is hidden, the odor persists without a visible source, water damage is extensive, or the moisture problem remains unresolved. Consult a health professional if you have health concerns. EPA notes that mold exposure may be associated with allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints; a shower’s appearance alone cannot identify a specific mold type. In particular, “black mold” is not a species or a specific kind of mold, according to EPA Mold Course Chapter 1.
