“Sequoia” can mean the coast redwood genus, Sequoia, or—more casually—a redwood such as the giant sequoia. They are not the same tree: the coast redwood is Sequoia sempervirens, while the giant sequoia is Sequoiadendron giganteum, a different genus. The giant sequoia is the largest tree by volume; the coast redwood is the taller species.
What does “Sequoia” mean?
In botanical usage, Sequoia is a genus represented today by the coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens. In everyday use, “sequoia” may also refer to the giant sequoia, Sequoiadendron giganteum. The names are easy to mix up, but the trees differ in scientific classification, habitat, and growth form.
A third tree often included in comparisons is the dawn redwood. The National Park Service’s “The Three Redwoods” comparison outlines how it differs from the two California redwoods.

Where do giant sequoias grow naturally?
Giant sequoias are native to scattered groves along the western slope of California’s Sierra Nevada. The USDA Forest Service estimates approximately 75 groves across a belt about 420 kilometers (260 miles) long. Its more recent species review gives a range of about 65 to 75 natural groves because the count depends on how a grove is defined; these are estimates, not an exact, fixed tally.
Coast redwoods grow in a different environment: a Pacific coastal range spanning northern and central California and southwestern Oregon. For field identification, the National Park Service’s comparison handout distinguishes coast redwood, giant sequoia, and dawn redwood.

How do fire and seeds shape giant sequoia forests?
Giant sequoias are adapted to mixed-severity fire, not to every fire under every condition. The USDA Forest Service describes traits that help them persist, including thick fire-resistant bark, cones that retain seeds, and successful seedling establishment in postfire openings. Fire can create localized canopy gaps and suitable places for new trees rather than simply benefiting a grove uniformly.
The National Park Service explains that heat dries older cones, causing them to open and release seeds. For seeds to germinate successfully, they need mineral soil exposed by fire. This links fire to regeneration, while the outcome depends on the conditions in a particular grove. The Park Service states that giant sequoias can reach ages of up to 3,400 years and that they “have survived a varied climate over the past two to three thousand years.”
