You can limit unnecessary runtime by setting a humidity target, reducing moisture entering the room and giving the unit enough airflow—but you cannot make a standard room dehumidifier cool the room. For active cooling, use an air conditioner that sends heat outdoors.
Why a dehumidifier makes the room feel warmer
A dehumidifier removes moisture from indoor air, but it is not an air conditioner: it processes air and returns it to the same room rather than carrying heat outside. The compressor and fan generate heat while the appliance operates, so the air near the outlet can feel warmer than the surrounding air. ENERGY STAR advises that warmer air immediately around a unit is not a cause for alarm. ENERGY STAR’s dehumidifier guidance and DeLonghi’s FAQ on warm exhaust describe this as normal.
How much the room warms depends on the unit, how long it runs, the room and operating conditions. The available guidance does not establish a universal temperature increase, so a specific number of degrees should not be expected.
How to reduce unnecessary heating

Use a humidity set point instead of continuous run
Set the humidistat to a suitable relative-humidity target and let the unit cycle rather than running continuously after the target is reached. ENERGY STAR says a building’s optimum relative humidity is generally 30% to 50%; in colder climates during heating season, 30% to 40% can help prevent condensation on windows. Conditions and the appliance manual matter, so treat these ranges as guidance rather than a requirement for every room.

Limit the moisture the unit has to remove
Close doors and windows to the space being dehumidified, as ENERGY STAR recommends. An open window is not a general heat remedy while the dehumidifier is running: it can bring in more humid air and increase the moisture load. Where practical, reduce indoor moisture sources so the appliance has less work to do.

Keep airflow clear and follow placement instructions
Give the unit the clearance specified in its manual. For units that do not discharge air upward, ENERGY STAR advises leaving space around the appliance so walls and furniture do not obstruct airflow. Clear airflow supports operation; it does not turn the dehumidifier into a cooling appliance.

Choose an efficient unit when replacing one
ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers use 20% less energy than similarly sized conventional units. That is an energy-use comparison, not a promise of a particular reduction in room temperature or heat output. Check that a replacement is appropriately sized for the space.

When you need cooling, use equipment that rejects heat outdoors
If the goal is to lower room temperature, use an air conditioner. A portable AC cools effectively only when its hot air is exhausted outdoors. Honeywell advises keeping the exhaust hose as short as practical, sealing the connections and choosing capacity for the room. When whole-home humidity control may make more sense
For persistent humidity across multiple rooms, a portable unit may not be the right scope of solution. ENERGY STAR describes whole-home ducted dehumidifiers as a possible option in humid climates and relatively well-sealed homes with central air, particularly when readings are consistently above 55% throughout the house. Proper sizing and professional installation are important. A single damp room reading does not by itself establish that a whole-home system is needed.
