Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can often make road construction noise less intrusive without replacing your windows, but the right fix depends on how sound is entering your home. Start by checking for leaks and comparing rooms; then consider reversible sealing or, if the window is the main weak point, a fitted interior glazing treatment. Curtains may soften sound reflections inside a room, but they are not a dependable substitute for stopping noise at the building envelope.
First, find the likely route into your home
Before buying a product, compare what you hear in different conditions. This is a practical check, not a formal acoustic test:
- Listen with the window open and then closed. If closing it makes a clear difference, the window or its seals may be part of the path.
- Check whether the sash closes fully and look for worn, damaged, or visibly gapped seals.
- Compare a road-facing room with one on a quieter side of the house. A sheltered room may be more comfortable during the loudest work.
If the noise remains strong with the window shut, it may be coming through another part of the building envelope, such as a wall, roof, vent, or another opening. A curtain or door draft stopper is unlikely to address every possible path. The Federal Highway Administration’s Construction Noise Handbook includes sealing existing building elements among possible mitigation measures; Australia’s government YourHome noise-control guide also cautions that some noise problems cannot be fully resolved without major work.
Try reversible measures before an installed treatment
Repair a real gap or worn seal
If inspection identifies a gap, replace or add weatherstripping that is compatible with the existing frame. Keep the window’s safe operation and necessary ventilation in mind; do not seal a functioning vent or interfere with hardware just to make the room quieter. Sealing is most relevant when air—and potentially sound—can pass through a defect. The available guidance does not establish a general decibel reduction for a particular weatherstripping product or for an individual home.

Use a quieter room when practical
If one room or façade is noticeably more sheltered, consider using it for sleep or work during the noisiest tasks. This avoids installation work, although the benefit depends on the home’s layout and the location and timing of construction.
Keep windows closed when noise control matters, but plan for ventilation
A closed window can reduce the direct path for outdoor noise compared with an open one. However, keeping windows shut can affect ventilation and comfort, especially in warm weather. Consider how the room will receive safe, adequate ventilation before relying on closed windows for long periods. HS2’s construction noise and vibration guidance discusses closed windows and alternative ventilation in the context of that specific project; it is not a universal retrofit prescription for every home.

Consider interior glazing if the window is the main weak point
If the existing window is in reasonable condition and appears to be the main route, an interior glass panel or secondary glazing may be worth assessing. These approaches add a treatment on the room side of the existing window rather than replacing the whole window. The FHWA handbook lists an interior glass sash and temporary clear vinyl curtain treatments among window-treatment options; HS2’s project guidance also discusses secondary glazing.
Suitability and performance depend on the actual opening and installation. Frame condition, available depth, hardware, ventilation needs, and how well the treatment fits all matter. The FHWA recommends evaluating window-treatment choices individually and verifying installation and performance. Ask a qualified installer or acoustics professional to assess the opening rather than assuming a product will deliver a particular result. The cited guidance does not provide a broadly applicable decibel reduction for a named secondary-glazing product.

Use curtains and soft furnishings for what they can do
Thicker curtains, rugs, and other absorptive finishes can reduce sound reflections within a room and change how it feels acoustically. That is different from preventing traffic noise from entering through a window. YourHome makes this distinction in its noise-control guidance. The available official guidance does not establish a general decibel reduction for consumer “acoustic” curtains, so do not treat a product label or blackout rating as proof that it blocks roadwork noise.
The FHWA handbook notes that window treatments can address noise from sources beyond construction, including traffic and aircraft. That describes a category of treatment, not a guarantee that every curtain performs alike or that a curtain will effectively treat a particular window.

- Sound Absorption & Noise Reduction: Made with a polyester woven surface and recycled cotton filling, this 3-layer physical barrier effectively absorbs indoor echoes, and reduces sound reflections. Note: 1. This product provides limited sound insulation and is mainly used as a protective barrier only. 2. Keep the product in a dry environment. If it gets wet, please air dry it promptly. Prolonged dampness may cause unpleasant odors and material damage
- Effective Light Blocking: The thick, dense material and dark color effectively block light, creating a dim environment and avoiding glare. Ideal for home theaters, conference room projections, tents, or temporary darkrooms
- Thickened Design: Secured with zig-zag quilting and double-stitched binding, the soundproof blanket maintains its shape, resists tearing, and stands up to long-term hanging use. No glue bonding and odor-free materials make it friendly for users and households
- Large Coverage: Each blanket measures 80 x 48 in / 2032 x 1219 mm. It provides wide coverage with fewer seams, ideal for covering standard doors and windows or handling large spaces where soundproofing, light blocking, and insulation are needed
- Easy Installation: Equipped with multiple metal grommets and woven straps, the acoustic blankets can be hung with hooks, screws, or curtain rods. Quick to set up and secure, it works as a flexible soundproof, blackout, or insulation barrier on walls, doors, and windows.
Ask the road project about controls at the source
Residents generally cannot install a properly designed barrier on public land themselves. Contact the road authority or contractor and ask what controls are in place, whether the loudest tasks can be scheduled or screened differently, and how to report a problem. Source-side measures can be more appropriate than trying to treat every route through a home, but what is possible depends on the site and local rules.
For a planned new road, GOV.UK advises contacting the relevant highway authority. Its road-noise guidance is specific to the UK context; elsewhere, check the relevant local authority and project information.

- Grid Adhesive Backing Design: The around door seal adopts a one-piece grid adhesive backing design, which is more adhesive than the general seal adhesive backing, and will not fall off easily during the use process, realizing long-lasting use
- Multi-Functional:Using our door jamb weather stripping can perfectly realize warmth in winter and coolness in summer, and save energy. At the same time there are sound insulation, anti-collision, shading, dustproof and other effects, make life more comfortable. Please note: When the weather is cold, it is recommended to use a hair dryer to heat the backing to enhance the adhesion
What a barrier can—and cannot—tell you
Barriers reduce noise by interrupting the direct sound path, and their effectiveness depends on height, length, placement, and continuity. The FHWA’s general highway-barrier guidance says a barrier that first blocks the line of sight can reduce noise by about 5 dB, with approximately 1.5 dB of additional reduction for each further meter of barrier height. These are highway barrier design figures, not predictions for a short garden fence, a temporary roadwork screen, or any particular home.
Escalate persistent disruption through the right local route
Keep a simple record of disruptive dates and times, then contact the project team or relevant authority with the details. Complaint routes and construction-noise rules vary by location. In England, councils can address construction-noise complaints and may specify working hours, machinery, noise levels, or mitigation steps; see GOV.UK’s guidance on how councils deal with noise nuisances. Residents elsewhere should check their own local rules and project contact information.
If you are considering an installed treatment and the sound path is unclear, seek an acoustics professional or qualified secondary-glazing installer. Ask them to assess the window’s condition, other possible paths through the building, ventilation requirements, and installation quality.
