You can often put a zipper slider back on without replacing the whole zipper, but the right method depends on whether it is a separating zipper, like a jacket’s, or a closed-end zipper, like a bag’s. First check that the teeth or coil are intact, then match the slider to the zipper and restore the stop that keeps it from sliding off.
Check the zipper before you start
Lay the item flat and inspect the full zipper chain. If teeth or coil sections are missing or damaged, putting the slider back on will not fix the underlying problem; the zipper may need repair or replacement. If the slider is intact and simply came off an accessible end, it may be reusable. Replace it if it is bent, broken, or no longer joins the two sides properly. iFixit recommends identifying the fault before replacing a slider, and WAWAK notes that broken or missing teeth or coils generally call for zipper replacement.
If the zipper is jammed, do not yank it. Gently free any fabric caught in the slider before proceeding; forcing it can cause further damage. Patagonia advises against forcing a jammed zipper.
Match the slider to the zipper
A replacement must fit the zipper’s construction and size. Zippers may use coil, molded plastic teeth, or metal teeth, and a slider intended for one type may not work on another. Look for a size stamped on the back or nose of the old slider. GEAR AID says, “The zipper slider size is located on the back or on the ‘nose’ of the slider.” If the marking is missing, ask the zipper or product manufacturer to identify the right part.

Size examples are only a starting point: jackets often use #3 or #5 sliders, while larger tents and sleeping bags may use #8 or #10, according to GEAR AID’s repair guide. Do not assume those sizes apply to every item. As one illustration of product-specific fit, PRYM Consumer USA’s Fix-A-Zipper instructions specify size 5 (5 mm) plastic molded zippers; that compatibility does not extend to all zipper types.
Identify the zipper style and access point
| Zipper style | Common example | Where to access the slider | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separating | Jacket | Top stop on the slider side | Preserve the starter box and pin at the bottom. |
| Non-separating (closed-end) | Bag or pouch | Often the bottom or sewn-in end | Access varies; a stop or a small section of stitching may need to be restored. |
Sailrite warns not to remove the starter box and pin on a separating zipper. Closed-end zipper construction varies, so there is no single access point or procedure for every bag. GEAR AID and WAWAK describe approaches that depend on the zipper’s design.

Put a slider back on a separating zipper
This approach is for a zipper that opens fully, such as a jacket zipper. You will need a correctly matched slider and a way to remove and replace the top stop. Needle-nose pliers may work for a metal stop; GEAR AID describes using nippers for a plastic Vislon stop. A seam ripper may be needed if stitching blocks access. Work carefully to avoid nicking the teeth or fabric.
- Find the slider-side top stop. Keep the starter box and pin at the bottom in place.
- Remove the top stop. Use the appropriate tool for the stop material, taking care not to damage the zipper tape or teeth. Open only the seam stitching needed for access.
- Remove the old slider, if present. Note its orientation before taking it off. Slide the matched replacement onto the zipper with its nose facing the same way; GEAR AID’s illustrated procedure places the nose upward.
- Feed in both sides evenly. Seat each zipper side in its channel rather than forcing one side ahead of the other.
- Restore the top stop. Fit a replacement stop securely so the slider cannot run off the top. Then close any stitching opened for access.
- Test gently. Move the slider a short distance and check that the teeth engage evenly before running it along the full length.
GEAR AID estimates about five minutes for its split-zipper replacement method; that is its estimate for the described procedure, not a general repair-time guarantee.

- Size GUIDE: Small zipper slider: teeth and coil sizes 1-4, medium zipper slider: teeth and coil sizes 5-7, large zipper slider: teeth and coil sizes 8-10
- CHOOSE SIZE: (See Video) check back of broken zipper; most zippers have a size number (1-10) on back of slider. Sizing chart below will determine which FixnZip is right. If zipper doesn’t have number, measure width of zipper teeth in millimeters or inches
Put a slider back on a closed-end zipper
A bag or pouch usually has no opening at the bottom like a jacket, so the slider commonly has to be fitted from the bottom or another sewn-in end. How you reach that end depends on the construction. You may need to remove a bottom stop and open a small amount of stitching, then restore the stop or seam after fitting the slider.
- Locate the accessible end. Inspect the zipper tape and seams to see where the slider can be introduced with the least disturbance.
- Open only what is necessary. Remove the stop or carefully unpick a small section of stitching if the construction requires it. Avoid cutting the zipper chain.
- Fit the slider. Hold the two sides level and guide them into the slider’s channels together. Check that the teeth or coils meet evenly as you move it a short distance.
- Secure the end again. Replace the stop or sew the opened section closed firmly enough to prevent the slider from slipping off.
- Test the repair gently. Check the zipper across its length. If the sides separate behind the slider, stop rather than forcing it; the slider may be mismatched or the chain may be damaged.
GEAR AID estimates 20–30 minutes for its closed-loop method. That estimate applies to its described method; access and time vary with zipper construction. WAWAK also describes installations in which a small cut at the end is followed by re-stitching, but that is not suitable for every zipper.

When to stop and get a different repair
- Teeth or coils are missing or broken: a slider-only fix will not restore the chain.
- The chain will not align: check that both sides are evenly seated and that the slider matches the zipper. Do not force it.
- You cannot reach an end without risking the item: a repair shop can assess whether the zipper can be repaired without damaging the garment or bag.
- The slider repeatedly separates the zipper: it may be worn or incompatible, or the chain may be damaged. Recheck the part match before trying again.
Patagonia notes that extensive damage may call for professional repair; the same is sensible when access is difficult or a DIY attempt could harm the item.
