To protect tomatoes from a light fall frost, cover them with breathable frost cloth or a supported row cover before temperatures drop. A ventilated clear-plastic tent is another option, but it can overheat in sunshine. Covers buy time; they are not dependable protection through a deep freeze. If a killing freeze is forecast, pick mature green tomatoes before it arrives and ripen them indoors.
How do I protect tomatoes from frost?
Check the local forecast and have your cover ready before frost threatens. For a light frost, lay breathable frost cloth over the plants or use a row cover supported above them. Secure the cover so it stays in place, and make sure a supported structure is large enough to enclose the plant without stretching or tearing the fabric.
Oregon State University Extension says spun-polyolefin frost cloth lets air, water, and light pass through. Its guide says frost cloth can protect down to 26°F, but emphasizes that it works for light frosts, not deep freezes. Choose a cover that fits the plant
- Breathable frost cloth: A practical choice for a light frost when a simple cover will fit over the plant.
- Hoop-supported row cover: A low tunnel can cover larger or delicate plants. Choose adequate height and width, and anchor the structure. Illinois Extension does not give a universal tomato-specific temperature rating for these covers. Illinois Extension, “Tips for extending the garden’s growing season”.
- Clear-plastic tent: Plastic can trap heat, so support it above the foliage rather than letting it rest on the plant. Leave an opening at the top and ventilate on bright days. Oregon State Extension advises not letting temperatures under plastic exceed 90°F for more than two or three consecutive days.
When are covers no longer enough?
Do not count on a cover to carry tomatoes through a deep freeze or a prolonged cold spell. Oregon State Extension warns that fruit exposed to several days below 50°F may begin to develop rots. This is a fruit-quality concern from sustained cold exposure, distinct from frost damage to the plant.

If a killing freeze is forecast and you cannot rely on protection, harvest the mature green fruit the day before. Illinois Extension recommends individually wrapping the tomatoes and storing them at 60–65°F for slow ripening. Do water-filled tomato protectors help in fall?
Water-filled protectors collect heat during the day and release it at night, but the University of Minnesota Extension guidance is aimed primarily at warmth-loving transplants early in the season. It advises removing the protector once the plant emerges through the top; it does not establish a fall frost rating for mature tomato plants. What should I do with green tomatoes before a freeze?
- Check the forecast. Decide whether the expected cold is a light frost or a killing freeze, and prepare covers ahead of the cold night.
- Cover for a light frost. Use breathable frost cloth or a supported row cover, secured over the plant.
- Vent plastic. If using a clear-plastic tent, leave an opening at the top and ventilate it on bright days to limit heat buildup.
- Pick before a killing freeze. Harvest mature green fruit the day before if protection is not adequate, then wrap each tomato and store it at 60–65°F for slow ripening, or hang whole plants in a sheltered place.
Cover performance depends on the forecast, material, installation, and conditions in the garden; no single cover provides a universal guarantee. Illinois Extension has also reported visible damage to uncovered plants within two days of an observed freeze event, but that observation is not a general measure of cover effectiveness.
