To make a woodworking spline joint, cut matching slots in the two mating pieces, fit a strip of wood, plywood, or hardboard into them, and assemble the joint. The spline can help align and reinforce the connection. This guide covers woodworking; in mechanical engineering, a spline joint is a toothed shaft interface that transmits torque, a separate design problem.
Plan the joint and its slots
First identify the joint: an edge-to-edge panel, an end-to-end connection, a cabinet joint, or a splined miter. The slot location and size depend on the stock, spline material, and joint geometry. There is no universal dimension recipe for all of these applications in the cited woodworking instructions.

As Craig Ruegsegger of WOOD magazine puts it, “To do a spline joint like this, you need to cut matching slots in each piece.” Plan how you will reference both workpieces so the slots line up and the faces meet evenly.

WOOD magazine describes handheld-router, router-table, and table-saw approaches. Pick the setup that supports your work securely and suits the joint geometry. The procedures below describe those source-specific methods; follow the tool maker’s safety instructions for your equipment.

- 【Aluminum Alloy Right Angle Spline Fixture】The right-angle spline jig is made of aluminum alloy, NC processing, anodized, with a solid structure, reliable, durable and wear-resistant, not easy to deform or break, and long service life.
- 【Spline Jig Suitable for】Clamping range: frame thickness 5-42mm/0.2-1.65inch, safety recommendation: frame depth 15-500mm/0.59-19.7inch. Adaptive clamping range, can be applied to more projects.
- 【Practical Design】The spline clamp can fix the frame left and right, which is more stable, providing a safer way of operation, away from danger. Ultra-low ground clearance, the workpiece is almost close to the table, high accuracy.
- 【Adjustable Corner Dovetail Jig for Table Saw Router Table】The spline clamp is more convenient to add design to your frame, can be used with table saws and planers to cut various spline grooves or dovetail keyways. Great for making picture frames, small boxes and other joinery.
- 【Package Content】You will receive 1pair aluminum alloy right angle spline jig, 1pcs hex wrench and 1pcs hex bit. Each spline jig is about 180x50x100mm/7.09x1.97x3.94inch(LxWxH), practical set for woodworking.
| Setup | Method described by the source | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld router with slot cutter | Support the stock so the bit clears the bench. Cut a slightly off-center slot, flip the workpiece, then make a second pass to center it; repeat appropriately on the mating piece. | Useful for larger supported pieces. Confirm the stock can be supported and controlled, and that the cutter is compatible with the router. |
| Router table | Set the fence to the cutter bearing and guide the stock with a push pad. | Consider repeatability, workpiece support, and the slot dimensions needed for the project. |
| Table saw | Make passes with each face of the workpiece against the rip fence to center the slot. | Workpiece orientation and a stable setup matter; use a suitable jig where needed. |
| Dedicated jig for an end slot or miter | WOOD magazine describes a saddle jig for standing end cuts. Woodcraft describes a twin-faced jig that straddles the rip fence for aligned miter slots. | Choose support and alignment appropriate to the joint. A backing piece can help limit exit tear-out. |
Cut an edge slot with a router
Handheld router
- Support the workpiece so the router base stays stable and the cutter can pass without striking the bench.
- Make a first slot pass slightly off center.
- Flip the workpiece and make a second pass to bring the slot to center.
- Apply the corresponding method to the mating piece, keeping the reference faces consistent so the slots align.
Router table
- Set the fence to the cutter bearing as described in the WOOD magazine method.
- Guide the stock with a push pad, keeping your hands away from the cutter.
- Use the same reference faces and setup for both mating pieces so the slots correspond.
Table saw
The described method centers the slot by making passes with each face against the rip fence. For standing end cuts, WOOD magazine describes a shop-made MDF saddle jig that fits the rip fence and has an upright at 90 degrees to the table. The jig supports the workpiece so it does not rock; account for the jig thickness when setting the fence.
Cut slots in ends or mitered pieces
End cuts and frame miters need support that keeps the work from rocking or shifting. For a router-table end cut, WOOD magazine recommends wide scrap as a stable backing surface; it also supports the work and helps reduce tear-out where the cutter exits.

- This spline jig strengthen your miter joints and add a design element in the form of splines across the miters.
- Works with both table saw and router table, cut a variety of spline slots or dovetail Keyways, suitable for making picture frames small boxes and other joinery.
- Perfect for projects as narrow as 0.6 inch and up to 20 inch wide; Can clamping 5-42mm(0.2-1.7 Inch) thick frame.
- Benefit from the unique structure, there are no metal obstacles above the saw blade and router bit, can effectively avoid accidental damage; Besides, the workpiece almost close to the table top, ground clearance only 1MM.
- TOOLCOOL spline Jig is made of aluminum alloy, CNC-machined, anodized finished, robust construction, reliable and has a long service life; Come with a allen wrench and hex bit, you can operate it manually or use a hand drill.
For splined miters, Woodcraft describes a twin-faced table-saw jig that straddles the rip fence to guide the opposing slots, along with a hold-down and backer arrangement to reduce blowout. Cut the spline to fit after making the slots.

Fit the spline and assemble
- Choose a spline strip of wood, plywood, or hardboard.
- Size it to fit the slots. The cited sources do not specify a universal spline width, depth, or species.
- Bring the mating pieces together and check that the faces align before glue-up. WOOD magazine describes a friction fit and aligned faces in its demonstration.
- Use an adhesive and assembly procedure suited to your project; the cited instructions do not establish a specific glue for every spline joint.
What a spline joint can and cannot tell you about strength
A spline can help align and reinforce a woodworking joint, but the cited instructions provide no universal strength value or comparative test showing that one slot-cutting method is stronger than another. Their practical distinctions are setup, workpiece support, alignment, and tear-out control. Choose dimensions and construction for the actual project rather than treating a general method as a structural rating.

If you mean a mechanical spline joint
A mechanical spline is not made by inserting a woodworking strip into matching slots. It is a toothed shaft interface designed to transmit torque, and its geometry and fit must correspond to the mating component. Sumitomo says design inputs such as drawings, CAD models, or physical samples define features including pitch, profile, fit class, and interface dimensions; process choice depends on geometry, material, and tolerances. Possible manufacturing processes include hobbing, shaping, milling, and EDM. Fit, alignment, concentricity, surface condition, and engagement also matter. See Sumitomo’s spline shaft design and manufacturing guidance.
For THK ball-spline products specifically, design considerations include nut type, rotational clearance, accuracy, effective spline length, hardened area, end shape, chamfers, and snap-ring groove. THK’s assembly guidance calls for aligning matching marks and inserting the shaft straight; forcing insertion may cause balls to fall out. It also calls for lubrication at the shaft surface for sealed or preloaded nuts. These instructions apply to THK ball splines, not every mechanical spline. See THK’s ball-spline design checklist and THK’s assembly guidance.
