You can build a squid as a quick paper craft, a small three-dimensional cardboard-roll model, or a water-propelled science toy. Choose the paper or roll model for a decorative project; use the propulsion activity if the goal is to demonstrate how pushing water backward moves an object forward. A Te Papa online activity called โBuild a Squidโ has been documented by NOAA, but its current availability and exact steps could not be confirmed.
Choose the kind of squid you want to build
| Activity | What you make | Materials described by the source | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Te Papa online activity | A digital squid to build and release | Not stated in NOAAโs guide; a device and internet access are practical requirements, not details confirmed by the source | A screen-based activity, if the legacy page is accessible |
| Printable paper craft | A flat cut-and-paste squid | Printable template; regular paper or optional cardstock. One listing describes colored and black-and-white sheets, a coloring page, and a final-project picture. | A quick home or classroom art project |
| Cardboard-roll model | A simple three-dimensional squid | Empty toilet roll and rubber bands; paper fins and eyes are optional | A low-cost model using basic materials |
| Water-propulsion toy | A balloon-powered object moving through water | Tub or pool, balloon, and water-bottle nozzle | A short motion demonstration, rather than a decorative squid craft |
The printable formats are described in seller listings, so the exact contents and availability of those products may change. The roll model and propulsion activity are separate projects, not steps required to assemble a paper squid.

Make a printable paper squid
A printable squid craft is the fastest option if you have a template. The described templates are cut-and-paste activities, and one listing allows printing on regular paper or cardstock. Cardstock can make a sturdier finished craft, but it is optional; ordinary paper works for the documented format.

- Choose a printable squid template. Listings describe both colored and black-and-white versions; one also includes a coloring page and a picture of the finished project.
- Print the sheet on regular paper or cardstock, following the instructions supplied with that particular template.
- Color any uncolored pieces, then cut and glue the parts according to the templateโs own assembly directions.
The listings establish the craft format, not one universal pattern or assembly order, so follow the directions that come with the template rather than assuming every squid printable is assembled the same way.

Build a three-dimensional squid from a cardboard roll
The University of Otago activity describes a simple model made with an empty toilet roll and rubber bands. It is a hands-on representation, not a scale-accurate squid replica.
- Gather an empty toilet roll and ten rubber bands. The activity specifies rubber bands cut open so they can be tied through holes.
- Punch ten holes around one end of the roll. An adult can prepare the holes if the builder should not use a hole-punch or other tool.
- Tie one end of a rubber band through each hole and let the bands dangle. Make two bands longer than the rest to represent the squidโs longer feeding tentacles.
- Add paper fins and eyes if you want to decorate the model; these are optional additions in the activity.
The Otago activity also uses the model to raise a useful anatomy question: does โsizeโ mean the mantle alone, or the mantle plus arms? It notes that scientists usually report squid size by mantle length because that measurement is more accurate. The modelโs dangling bands are a simplified way to represent arms and tentacles, not a measurement guide.

Try a separate squid-style water-propulsion demonstration
If the aim is to see motion rather than make a display model, Experiment Exchangeโs Curiosity Zone describes a balloon-and-nozzle activity credited July 20, 2016. The activity uses a tub or pool, a balloon, and a water-bottle nozzle. It explains the forward movement as a reaction to water being pushed backward, illustrating Newtonโs Third Law.

- Set up the tub or pool so the toy can move freely in water.
- Fill a balloon with water and twist its opening closed.
- Stretch the balloon opening over the closed water-bottle nozzle while keeping the balloon twisted shut.
- Place the toy in the water, then open the nozzle and observe the direction it moves as water exits.
This is a propulsion demonstration, not an assembly method for the paper template or cardboard-roll squid. Follow the activityโs source instructions and use appropriate adult supervision around water and small parts.

What about the Te Papa โBuild a Squidโ activity?
NOAAโs education guide lists a Te Papa-linked online activity called โBuild a Squidโ and describes it this way: โNothing but fun! Build your own squid, set it free, and then check out what yours and all the other squids have been up to.โ The guide documents the activity, but the legacy link could not be confirmed as working, and Te Papaโs current science-and-nature index does not establish its present status. Treat it as a previously documented option, not a guaranteed playable activity; no current interface steps can be verified.
