To make a rabbet joint, cut an open-sided recess along the edge or end of one board so the mating piece seats against its shoulder. Mark the cut from the actual mating stock, guide the tool steadily, and test the fit on scrap before cutting the project parts. A guided router is a straightforward option; a router table, table saw, or hand tools may suit other workpieces and setups.

What a rabbet joint is—and when to use one

A rabbet is a recess cut along the edge or end of a board. The mating piece fits into that recess, which can help the parts register during assembly. Rabbets are used in work such as cabinet backs, cabinet sides and tops, drawers, and picture frames.

Position distinguishes a rabbet from related cuts: a dado crosses the face of a board, while a groove runs along the face with the grain. The University of Melbourne workshop guide explains the difference by where each cut sits on the workpiece: University of Melbourne workshop guide.

Choose a method for the workpiece and cut

Method Best suited to How it is guided
Handheld router with rabbeting bit A guided edge cut; it can also follow a curved edge if the bearing can track the profile The bit’s bearing rides against the edge. Changing the bearing changes the rabbet width; set the depth and verify the fit against the mating stock. WOOD magazine
Handheld router with straight bit A wider or custom-width rabbet Use an edge guide, a clamped straightedge, or another secure guide. WOOD magazine
Router table Repeated cuts or suitable smaller parts that can be controlled safely Set bit height for depth and fence position for width. Woodcraft describes feeding right to left; follow the router and table manufacturers’ instructions. Woodcraft
Table saw Repeated or wider cuts with an appropriate machine setup WOOD magazine demonstrates a dado set and notes that repeated passes with a standard blade can also form a rabbet. Use the saw manual for setup, guarding, and workholding. WOOD magazine
Rabbet plane or shoulder plane Through rabbets cut by hand Lay out width and depth, then check that the cheek is square to the shoulder. Fine Woodworking
Chisel and router plane Stopped rabbets, which do not run to an open edge Remove most waste with the chisel, then level the cheek with the router plane. Fine Woodworking

Choose based on whether the rabbet is stopped or through, workpiece size and stability, the repeatability needed, and the tools available. These are alternatives, not a universal ranking.

How to cut a rabbet with a handheld router

  1. Measure from the mating piece. Check the actual thickness of the board or panel that will fit into the rabbet; nominal plywood and MDF dimensions may not match the material in hand. Mark the width and depth to suit the joint and project design. WOOD magazine demonstrates using the actual mating piece to gauge fit: WOOD magazine.
  2. Choose the bit and guide. A rabbeting bit uses its bearing to follow the workpiece edge. A straight bit can make a custom-width cut when guided by an edge guide or clamped straightedge. Confirm the bit and guide are suitable for your router and setup.
  3. Clamp the work and test on scrap. Keep the stock from shifting and make a test cut in matching scrap. Adjust the setup until the mating piece seats as intended rather than relying on a nominal dimension.
  4. Cut in controlled passes. Woodcraft recommends removing no more than 1/8 inch per pass for router work; treat that as guidance, not a substitute for the router and cutter makers’ limits. Popular Woodworking also describes light passes for a router-table method: Popular Woodworking.
  5. Support the exit where appropriate. A sacrificial piece at the exit can help reduce tear-out. Maintain the guide and secure workholding through the cut.
  6. Dry-fit, then assemble. Check the actual joint before applying glue. If the design calls for a glued joint, glue and clamp the mating pieces after the fit is right. Popular Woodworking

How to make a stopped rabbet by hand

A stopped rabbet ends before the edge, so a plane cannot simply run in from an open end. Score the layout lines, remove most of the waste with a chisel, then use a router plane to level the cheek to the marked depth. Check the shoulder and floor as you work so the mating part fits without rocking. Fine Woodworking describes the chisel-and-router-plane approach: Fine Woodworking.

Set the width and depth for the joint

There is no single rabbet size that works for every project. Determine the dimensions from the mating part and the design, then confirm them with a test cut. Woodcraft offers a rule of thumb that rabbet depth should not exceed two-thirds of the stock thickness; this is an editorial guideline, not a universal engineering requirement. For a load-bearing joint, follow the project design or qualified construction guidance rather than relying on that rule alone. Woodcraft

Work safely and avoid common fit problems

  • Shifting stock: clamp the workpiece and use a guide that cannot move during the cut.
  • Loose or tight fit: measure the actual mating stock and test on scrap before cutting finished parts.
  • Tear-out at the exit: support the edge with sacrificial stock where appropriate.
  • Overloaded or uncontrolled cut: use light passes within the limits specified by the tool and cutter manufacturers.
  • Machine-specific hazards: router-table and table-saw configurations differ. Follow the exact machine manual, use suitable push devices, and do not assume a guarding procedure applies to every machine.
