You can cut it with a router or on a table saw; whichever setup you choose, matching stock, careful layout, and test cuts on scrap are key to a flush fit.
What a mitered half-lap is—and what “strong” means
The joint combines a visible miter with a hidden half-lap: each member is recessed so the two pieces overlap, with complementary faces meeting at the corner. The miter supplies the clean exterior line; the lap provides additional flat-grain area for glue. In a picture-frame example, the mitered rails and mating parts receive matching recesses so their tongues overlap.
That added glue surface is the strength rationale, not a quantified guarantee. Glen D. Huey, former managing editor of Popular Woodworking Magazine, describes it this way: “With a half-lap, there is plenty of flat-grain glue surface, and that increases the holding power, big time.” The how-to sources offer no controlled strength measurements or load ratings, so the joint should not be assigned a strength multiplier or treated as a structural rating. A lap also is not self-locking: glue or a fastener is needed to keep it intact.
Choose a cutting method
| Method | Setup | Useful considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Router with shop-made fence | Router, straight bit, and plywood fence clamped to the work, as described by Glen D. Huey. | Lets you establish the cut from a sample to account for the router-base-to-bit offset; remove waste progressively and check the fit on scrap. Popular Woodworking |
| Router table with paired jigs | Matched rail and stile jigs; the WOOD Magazine example is designed for 2-inch-wide frame stock, with fences adjusted for other widths. | Routes the mitered rail face-up and square-ended stile face-down in their respective jigs. Useful when the jig and workholding suit your stock and repeat work. WOOD Magazine |
| Table saw with dado setup | Table saw and dado setup, with the blade checked for squareness. | Register mating dadoes carefully and tune the fit on offcuts before cutting project parts. WOOD Magazine |
Pick the setup that allows stable, safe workholding and accurate, repeatable cuts with the tools you have. Stock width and thickness, the number of matching parts, and how easily you can tune the fit on scrap also matter. The cited guides do not report comparative cutting times or measured strength results.

Router method with a shop-made fence
- Prepare and lay out the parts. Machine the stock to matching thickness and width, then cut pieces to finished length. In Huey’s base-frame example, the front rail is mitered while its adjoining return remains square. Mark the complementary faces before routing so each recess lands on the correct side.
- Set the fence and bit from a sample. Clamp a straight plywood fence to the work. Use a sample cut to establish the distance from the router base to the bit; do not assume the bit will track the fence without accounting for that offset.
- Set the depth and test the overlap. Set the cut to remove half the workpiece thickness. Route scrap first, check that the complementary pieces seat together, and adjust before cutting finished parts.
- Remove waste in controlled passes. Keep the router base flat and pressed down throughout the cut, especially as you approach the end, where the base can tip into the opening. Check the fit as you work rather than forcing an incorrect joint together.
Huey’s method and layout are detailed in Popular Woodworking’s mitered half-lap guide.
Router-table method with paired jigs
WOOD Magazine describes matched jigs for routing the rail and stile. Its example is built around 2-inch-wide frame stock; adjust the fences when using different widths. Machine the stock consistently, use scrap test pieces, and confirm flushness before routing the project parts.

- Set up and adjust the paired jigs for the actual stock width.
- Make a half-thickness cut, then route scrap pieces to check the overlap and alignment.
- Route the mitered rail face-up in its jig and the square-ended stile face-down in its jig.
- Check that the test pieces meet flush at the visible corner before proceeding with the frame parts.
See the WOOD Magazine router-table guide for the paired-jig arrangement.
Table-saw method with a dado setup
- Match the stock. Machine the parts to the same width and thickness so the overlapping cuts align.
- Check the saw and set cut depth. Check blade squareness, then set the dado depth to half the stock thickness.
- Test on offcuts. Use scrap to verify the depth and fit before cutting the frame pieces.
- Register the mating dadoes. Mark the parts and align each cut carefully so the complementary recesses meet in the intended orientation.
- Trim and test the fit. Tune the cuts on scrap for a snug overlap and a flush mitered corner; do not rely on glue to correct a misaligned or gapped joint.
The WOOD Magazine table-saw guide describes the dado setup and fitting process.

Where the joint fits—and where its limits matter
The cited examples use mitered half-laps for picture frames, base frames, and other framed corners where the outside should read as a miter. Fine Woodworking notes that lap miters trade some long-grain surface for the visible miter and can improve alignment during glue-up. That makes the joint a practical option when a framed corner needs both a mitered appearance and an overlapping glue joint—not proof of capacity for a particular load.
A dedicated router-table jig is optional. Shop-made fences and table-saw setups are also documented. For any method, the common fit checks are consistent stock, a half-thickness cut, accurately registered mating parts, and successful scrap tests before committing the finished pieces.
