Usually, yes: a computer beside an intact, normally operating microwave is not expected to be damaged by microwave energy. The more likely problems are temporary Wi-Fi or Bluetooth glitches, kitchen heat and moisture, blocked ventilation, or an unsuitable electrical setup. Keep the computer on a dry, stable surface with its vents clear; avoid putting it on top of the microwave or sharing a power strip with it.
What can actually happen to a computer near a microwave?
It helps to separate three different concerns: microwave energy inside the oven, the small amount of energy that may leak from it, and radio interference that can disrupt a wireless connection. These are not the same thing.
Normal microwave use is not expected to damage computer hardware
A microwave heats food with energy inside its cooking compartment; it does not send a focused cooking beam across the kitchen. U.S. rules limit emissions from an oven after sale to 5 mW/cm² at approximately 5 cm (2 inches) from its surface. The FDA notes that a measurement at 20 inches would be about one-hundredth of the value at 2 inches. Those figures describe microwave leakage, not a recommended distance for placing a computer, and leakage is not literally zero. They do support the practical conclusion that an intact, compliant oven is not expected to fry nearby electronics. FDA: Microwave Ovens · 21 CFR § 1030.10
Wireless trouble can be temporary and real
Microwave ovens operate at about 2.45 GHz, close to the 2.4-GHz band used by many Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices, and some cordless phones. While the oven runs, interference can make a connection slower or less reliable: a video may buffer, a call may drop, or Bluetooth audio may stutter. Whirlpool acknowledges that some 2.4-GHz wireless networks and cordless phones can experience noise or static during microwave operation. That is a communications problem, not evidence that the computer itself has been damaged. OSHA: Electromagnetic Field Memo · Whirlpool: Electronic Interference

Where should you put the computer?
For a kitchen setup, placement and the surrounding conditions matter more than ordinary microwave leakage. Choose a stable, dry counter away from the sink, cooktop, steam, splashes, and the microwave door’s swing. Route cables so they are not near water or in a walkway. Leave the computer’s vents unobstructed.
Laptop or tablet
A laptop or tablet is generally fine beside the microwave if it stays dry, cool, stable, and ventilated. Do not rest it on the microwave unless that model’s manufacturer permits it and the computer still has adequate airflow. A countertop microwave’s top may be warm, may cover a vent, and is a poor place for a device that could be struck or splashed when someone removes hot food. Apple likewise advises using a stable surface with air circulation under and around a Mac and not obstructing its ventilation openings. Apple: MacBook Pro ventilation and placement

Desktop tower and monitor
Microwave energy is not ordinarily a reason to move a wired desktop. In a kitchen, however, a tower and monitor are exposed to grease, food particles, moisture, heat, and accidental spills. Keep the tower’s intake and exhaust clear, and avoid a spot beside a sink or cooktop. An Ethernet-connected desktop is much less vulnerable to microwave-related Wi-Fi interference, though wireless accessories or electrical problems can still be affected.
Router and wireless accessories
A router placed beside or behind the microwave may have more impact on the household connection than a computer placed there, because it serves the wireless link continuously. Do not position the microwave directly between the router and the computer if you can avoid it. Bluetooth headphones, keyboards, mice, and game controllers can also glitch; testing temporarily with wired accessories can help isolate the source.

Does the computer need a separate outlet?
Not automatically, but a microwave is a high-power appliance. Follow its installation manual and use an appropriate grounded wall outlet. Avoid plugging it into a cheap extension cord or sharing a power strip with the computer. An electrician can assess questionable wiring; there is no universal circuit rule that can be determined without the appliance rating and the home’s wiring details.
A separate outlet or circuit may help if the problem is electrical loading or conducted electrical noise, but it will not necessarily fix Wi-Fi interference, which travels through the air. Whirlpool’s troubleshooting guidance includes moving an affected receiver, trying another outlet, and using a different wireless frequency or a corded device where applicable. - In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- If a breaker trips repeatedly, a plug or outlet gets hot, the outlet is loose, or lights dim markedly, stop using the arrangement and have it assessed by a qualified electrician.
- Do not make a wiring or extension-cord decision from a generic amp rating; the right answer depends on the microwave, cord, receptacle, circuit, and local requirements.
How to tell whether the problem is Wi-Fi, the computer, or power
- Reproduce the symptom. Check whether it happens only while the microwave is running, and whether the screen or computer shuts down or only the internet connection fails.
- Move the computer temporarily. Test it several feet farther away, and avoid having the microwave directly between it and the router.
- Try another Wi-Fi band. If both router and computer support it, test 5-GHz or 6-GHz Wi-Fi. These bands are generally less exposed to the oven’s 2.45-GHz operation, but distance, walls, congestion, and device support still matter, so a fix is not guaranteed.
- Test with Ethernet. If the wired connection is stable while Wi-Fi drops, that points toward a wireless-path problem rather than a computer hardware failure.
- Try wired peripherals. If only a Bluetooth or 2.4-GHz mouse, keyboard, or headset glitches, test with a wired one.
- Try a suitable separate wall outlet. Do not put the microwave and computer together on a power strip. A different outlet may help with an electrical issue but cannot rule out airborne radio interference.
- Check the microwave and other devices. Note whether multiple nearby devices are affected and look for damage, unusual noise, sparks, smoke, or a burning smell.
When should you stop using the microwave?
Do not use an oven that has a bent door, damaged or loose hinges or latches, damaged sealing surfaces, or a door that does not close firmly. Stop using it if it operates with the door open, sparks, smokes, smells burnt, or repeatedly trips a breaker. Severe interference affecting several devices is also a reason to contact the manufacturer for guidance and have the appliance checked.
Federal rules require safety interlocks and warn against defeating them or operating an oven with damaged doors, hinges, latches, or seals. Do not open or attempt to repair the microwave yourself; service should be performed by properly qualified personnel. 21 CFR § 1030.10 · FDA microwave safety guidance

Could it corrupt files or damage a drive?
In ordinary use, a properly functioning microwave beside a computer is not a credible cause of corrupted files or damaged storage. If files are failing, consider more plausible causes such as a failing drive, power loss, software faults, overheating, bad cables, malware, or accidental liquid damage. Fire, a serious electrical fault, or a spill could damage equipment, but those are separate hazards—not the normal effect of microwave energy.
Special cases to keep in mind
Built-in and over-the-range models
Do not assume a countertop microwave’s clearances or ventilation arrangements apply to a built-in or over-the-range model. Follow the installation instructions for the specific model.
Implanted medical devices
People with pacemakers or implanted defibrillators should follow the device manufacturer’s current electromagnetic-field guidance. Apple’s stated separation advice for certain medical devices is specific to its products and implanted-device interaction; it is not a general distance rule for placing any computer beside any microwave. Apple: MacBook Air and medical devices
Children using a computer in the kitchen
A screen can distract someone near hot food, boiling liquids, knives, or an open oven. That is a practical kitchen-safety concern, separate from microwave radiation.
