Most dishwasher filters are on the floor of the tub, beneath the lower rack—often near the lower spray-arm base or in a rear corner. The exact location and removal method depend on the model, so check its manual before taking anything apart. If the filter is removable, rinse it gently, reinstall it as directed, and make sure it is locked before running the dishwasher.
Where is the dishwasher filter?
Open the dishwasher and slide out the lower rack. Look across the tub floor, especially around the base of the lower spray arm and in the rear corners. The filter’s position and appearance vary by model, so use the owner’s manual or manufacturer instructions to identify it before trying to remove anything.
Identify the filter type before cleaning
Some dishwashers have a removable filter that needs periodic rinsing. Others use a maintenance-free filtration system; a foreign-object cup in that system may still need to be emptied if it fills, but that does not mean the filter assembly should be removed. Whirlpool describes both types in its dishwasher filter guidance. Follow the instructions for your specific model and do not force a part that does not release as directed.
How to clean a removable dishwasher filter
- Remove the lower rack. Slide it out to reach the tub floor and filter.
- Consult the model instructions. Remove only parts the manual identifies as removable. For the removable Whirlpool design covered in its guidance, turn the upper filter assembly one-quarter turn counterclockwise and lift it out; if the model has a lower filter, lift and pull it forward. Other models may use a different sequence. See Whirlpool’s removal instructions.
- Clear loose debris carefully. Pick up visible objects without pushing debris into the filter opening.
- Rinse the filter. Hold it under running water until most soil is gone. If stubborn soil or calcium deposits remain, gently brush the filter with a soft brush or old toothbrush. Do not use a wire brush or scouring pad; these can damage it. Whirlpool’s cleaning guidance describes this approach.
- Reinstall and secure every part. Put the components back in their specified positions and check that the assembly is seated and locked as directed. Whirlpool warns: “IMPORTANT: To avoid damage to dishwasher, do not operate your dishwasher without the filters properly installed.”
How often should you clean the filter?
Use the schedule in your dishwasher’s manual rather than assuming one interval applies to every model. Cleaning needs can vary with usage, how dishes are prepared before loading, and water conditions. Whirlpool’s general guidance suggests checking the product manual and offers a monthly suggestion, but the model-specific manual is the more useful schedule for your appliance: cleaning guidance and filter location and care.

For one specific example, a Whirlpool owner manual published in June 2022 recommends cleaning the filter at least once a month in very hard water—defined there as above 15 grains of hardness. That is a recommendation for the manual’s covered model, not a universal rule. The same manual varies its intervals based on weekly load count and whether dishes are scraped, scraped and rinsed, or washed before loading; see the owner manual.

If the filter is damaged or will not come out
- If a part does not release using the manual’s sequence, stop rather than twisting or prying it. Confirm that you have identified the correct component and model-specific instructions.
- If the filter is cracked, damaged, or worn, use the manual or manufacturer parts lookup to identify an exact-model replacement. Do not assume a generic filter will fit.
- If the manual describes a maintenance-free system, follow its directions for the foreign-object cup instead of trying to remove the filter assembly.
