Use outdoor-rated string lights to outline porches and railings, spotlights to draw attention to larger props, and battery-operated lights or glow sticks inside jack-o’-lanterns. Before switching anything on, check its location rating and condition, follow the manufacturer’s installation directions, and keep cords and decorations out of visitors’ paths.
Choose lighting to suit the display
Start with where the light will be used and what it needs to illuminate. Check the product marking and instructions rather than assuming that a decorative light is suitable for outdoor use.

Keep the route to the door clear
Move obstacles off lawns, steps, and porches, and position lights, cords, and props so visitors can approach and leave without stepping over them. Secure outdoor installations and switch them off
Secure outdoor lights to a firm support to help protect them from wind, using suitable fasteners and the installation method specified by the manufacturer.
